DC Universe Injustice

Discussing DC Injustice and Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe.

Top 10: Gods We Want Among Us - Villains!

The boffins at NetherRealm Studios are back at work, applying their trade to a universe of superhuman skills and deadly fighting techniques -- but it isn't Mortal Kombat! In 2013, the heroes and villains of DC Comics will get the fighting game treatment once again, arriving in Injustice: Gods Among Us!

?With more than seventy years of four-color history to draw inspiration from, it's a wide and wonderful world of possibilities that awaits! So far, a confirmed playable character list is split between six heroes and villains who possess Power and Gadget abilities: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Harley Quinn and Solomon Grundy.
Emphasis on adaptable, character-specific skills promises to make Injustice a very different experience to the hugely successful Mortal Kombat games the studio is best known for. Interactive fighting environments will add a special superhero twist to the side-to-side of battle, making characters and location as much a factor as preparation time and training.

Two weeks ago, we lept upon the wild stallion of speculation to pick an eclectic mix of Ten Heroes We Want Among Us. With so many characters available in the DC canon, we simply couldn't resist assembling the Mortal Kombat Online staff to catalogue our Top Ten Villains, as well!

For the sake of keeping it fresh, we're putting aside the iconic characters who were last brought to life by NetherRealm Studios, in 2008's Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe, as well as those already featured in Injustice. That means you can assume the likes of Darkseid, Lex Luthor, Joker, Deathstroke, Green Lantern, Catwoman and Captain Marvel are already pretty high on our list.

Fans with superhuman vision have also spotted what appears to be Doomsday lurking in the background of preview footage, so we're going to put the hulk that once killed Superman to one side, as well. With only ten villains, we're bound to miss plenty of other great characters, though. So be sure to share your thoughts with us in the forum comments!

#1 Scarecrow
Real Name: Dr. Jonathan Crane
First Appearance: World's Finest Comics #3 (1941)

With feature appearances in the hugely successful Batman Begins and The Dark Knight films -- the villainous doctor of fear, Scarecrow, is a pretty hot commodity, these days!

His video game acumen was popularly proven in 2009's breakthrough award winning title, Arkham Asylum, where the hallucinogenic properties of the Scarecrow's fear toxin took the plot in bizarre and creepy directions! Scarecrow's value to the reportedly expanded story mode of Injustice is a given, but simulating the fevered response of fear and paranoia in the fighting game domain isn't without its charms.

The constraints of a shared screen might mean options are a little bit limited, taking away, say, the potential to flood your opponents screen with nightmare creatures and contorted visions -- a fun idea for screen-to-screen multiplayer! That said, there are plenty of conventional methods for messing with your opponents head, which would work just fine: forcing characters into a control scrambled panic, freezing them with trembling terror, or just stripping them of their powers with stage fright.

#2 Ra's al Ghul
Real Name: Ra's al Ghul
First Appearance: Batman #232 (1971)

It's important to remember that there's a whole lot more to the DC Universe than just the characters you've seen in Batman. Still, riding on the crest of a Liam Neeson fake-out appearance in Batman Begins -- which may or may not have a role to play in the July 20-bound sequel -- the man called Ra's al Ghul is a fair choice!

Deathstroke showed how swordplay can factor in to a villain's moveset, even in a game without specific switch-out weapon styles (MKvsDC). The trademark scimitar of the master-villain could be an interesting twist, but for a character who is otherwise best represented with deft hand-to-hand fighting skills, you can't go past the gimmick of environments. Several hundred years old, "The Demon Head" enjoys near-eternal life thanks to the unnatural healing powers of the mysterious natural phenomena called a Lazarus Pit!

Bubbling in the background of any number of applicable backgrounds, a Lazarus Pit available for a quick dip, supplying a health recovery boost, would no doubt make Ra's an intriguing opponent on home soil. The pits can famously even resurrect the dead, albeit in a maddened state. With shades of Gill from the Street Fighter series, Ra's could become a compelling boss, or mode-specific challenge, if nothing else.

#3 Sinestro
Real Name: Thaal Sinestro
First Appearance: Green Lantern #7 (1961)

Once the greatest of the Green Lanterns, Sinestro was exposed as a tyrant and surpassed by the human recruit he trained, Hal Jordan. Stripped of his green ring of willpower, Sinestro would later come into possession of a yellow ring created by the Weaponers of Qward! Fuelled by the fear he inspires, Sinestro leads his own army of yellow lanterns, known as the Sinestro Corps!

Under the direction of Geoff Johns, the Green Lantern comics have enjoyed a long lived reneissance, which propelled Sinestro back to the top tier of villainy in the DC Universe. This significance saw Sinestro, along with his Corps, briefly featured in an ending in Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe, making his arrival in Injustice longcoming and welcome!

On a basic level, Sinestro runs the risk of being a return to palette swaps -- yellow for green -- but with the energy constructs of a power ring character, there's a lot of opportunity for differences in application and visual representation. A more aggressive, fear-inspiring figure; Sinestro's use of the ring should differ from any Green Lantern inevitably joining the Injustice line-up. Exhibiting the harder edge of an amoral Lantern, Sinestro can veer into more overtly violent designs, with a more aggressive playstyle designed to punish opponents.

#4 Black Adam
Real Name: Teth-Adam
First Appearance: The Marvel Family #1 (1945)

Like Sinestro, Black Adam represents an alternate vision of the powers possessed by a heroic counterpart -- in this case, Captain Marvel. In a game where the heroes may very well have gone rogue, this could either make for the perfectly matched counter-response to a corrupt Marvel, or simply provide an easy-bake compliment to titilate fans who will no doubt be eagre to see their favourites.

Another of the characters refurbished and reinvigorated not too long ago by Geoff Johns, the character has actually loitered in the grey area of morality, not always the polarized villain his name suggests, even if his willingness to extinguish a life is ever-present. An ancient hero, powered by an Egyptian-inspired pantheon that make up his particular SHAZAM acronym; Black Adam once again offers the basic opportunity to create a more deliberate, violent incarnation of the Captain Marvel character. That said, with downloadable content a known factor for the future of Injustice, characters like this might be best accepted in an add-on capacity, tittilating fans who are eagre to see their favourite characters move across the screen, without the burden of a completely unique skillset expected of an initial playable roster.

#5 Gorilla Grodd
Real Name: Grodd
First Appearance: Flash #106 (1959)

Batman villains may have all the press, but when it comes to the world of the comic books, the Flash Rogues will give any crooked gallery a run for their money! Although not technically a member of the elite brotherhood known as The Rogues, Gorilla Grodd has had more than his fair share of tangles with the men who've been The Flash!

When you boil it all down, there're really only a couple of things you need to know about Gorilla Grodd: He's a super-intelligent gorilla and he has mind control powers. If you really need more explanation than that, I can't help but think you're not doing your part for humanity. Fighting games have had their trists with fighting animals, but none have had the emotive potential of Gorilla Grodd, whose physical strength would be aptly complimented by ape-like dexterity and the potential to take possession of the opposing character! We know the idea here is to distance the game from MK, but controlling opponents was used to good effect with Quan Chi in the last game, and is ripe for expansion.

#6 Amazo
Real Name: N/A
First Appearance: The Brave and the Bold #30 (1960)

Offering a unique twist on the fighting game tradition of a character with stolen moves -- Amazo is a super-powered android created by the mad Professor Ivo. Able to scan and mimick the super-human abilities of the entire Justice League, Amazo can just about have any in-game ability you can conceive of.

As a story mode obstacle, Amazo has the potential to be a serious heavy-hitter, powered up with any and all powers programmed amongst the playable cast. As a balanced character with a unique hook, the option is there to simply mirror the abilities of an immediate opponent, or add any combination of others in any conceivable fashion. Choosing from the list might be a bit timeconsuming, so a secondary or complete list of randomized special abilities might be an interesting idea. Assuming the Power character functions of Injustice couldn't just boil it all down to presentation.

#7 Poison Ivy
Real Name: Pamela Isley
First Appearance: Batman #181 (1966)

In the immortal words of the often covered song, "You can look, but you better not touch!" Poison Ivy isn't exactly the most physically involved when it comes to combat in the DC Universe, usually favouring the manipulation of male brutes, but over the past few years, she remains a curiously popular character within a certain element of the fanbase. Many noticed the absence of Swamp Thing in our heroes list, but in a world always in need of a little gender diversity, Poison Ivy takes the powers of "The Green" and goes completely wild with it!

Able to call upon the most destructive forces of the plant world; Ivy's penchant for summoning vines, flytraps and other rapidly growing botanic brutalizers has the potential to take background interaction to new levels! Perhaps more than any other character, Ivy could go so far as to influence the environment, in a mechanic that allows her floral growth to remain a constant, or alter the surrounding terrain.

#8 Rag Doll
Real Name: Peter Merkel Jr
First Appearance: Villains United #1 (2005)

In our Top 10 Heroes we threw a few curve balls, and I think it's safe to say this is another one. Contorted for an available pitcher, Rag Doll could probably quite literally be thrown as a curveball, which alludes to why he's such an intriguing possibility.

Introduced in 2005 under writer Gail Simone, the character earned a pretty dedicated cult following almost instantly as a member of DC's Secret Six. Legacy character to the golden age Flash villain of the same name -- this particular Rag Doll has the distinction of an unnatural, medical means of super-contortion -- deformed with a rash of surgical scars beneath his lanky harlequin exterior.

With a twisted, sunny disposition to go with his twisted body, this almost has the potential to become a basic exercise in animation ragdoll physics. Inviting the hyper-kinetic style of the Capcom Versus games, Rag Doll is his own weapon, primed to hurl and bounce across the screen like a flying mess of limbs. Unfamiliarity may make this seem an odd choice, but with the right degree of mania, Rag Doll would be an instant hit, even if his spastic fighting style meant that wasn't true of every in-game attack. In a game aiming for the Evo Championships, that's the kind of unpredictability you can't buy -- and a great way to introduce the meta tier!

#9 Prometheus
Real Name: Unknown
First Appearance: New Year's Evil: Prometheus #1 (1998)

Witness to his parents death when they were gunned down by law enforcement at the end of a murderous crime spree; Prometheus vowed to use the ill gotten fortune of his parents to dedicate his adult life to the eradication of justice. Travelling the world, he amasses a wealth of skills, knowledge and technology, refining himself into the ultimate human weapon!

Conceived as the anti-Batman, Prometheus is everything you would expect: a master tactician at the peak of physical human ability, superbly trained in hand-to-hand and special weapons combat. With a helmet that can download specialist skills direct to his brain, capturing the essence of Prometheus in a fighting game poses some obstacles, but we have faith that it's possible.

Customarily armed with a techno-tonfa and Ghost Key, which allows him instant teleportation -- the big difficulty is simply avoiding reducing Prometheus to the bland status of a common character. It was this type of approach that resulted in the introduction of an impostor (in comics), patsy to explain away the fumbling of a villain who once single-handedly took down the might of the Justice League! With that in mind, who better to take fire from the gods among us than Prometheus?

#10 Mirror Master
Real Name: Evan McCulloch
First Appearance: Animal Man #8 (1989)

Mirror Master is another of the Flash's legendary rogues we'd love to see in Injustice. Originally Sam Scudder, the most recent man to take the name is Scottish mercenary, Evan McCulloch, and we assume he might be the logical choice. In any event, it's the unique abilities of the Mirror Master that makes him an attractive choice, not just to us! It seems the MKOmmunity has taken a long hard look at themselves and seen the potential of Mirror Master, too!

Able to enter a mirror universe through any reflective surface, Mirror Master's potential interactions with his environments could get pretty far-out, given the right amount of ingenuity and in-game tech. Able to attack from all sides, given the opportunity, Mirror Master could simply fight with protruding limbs, or go so far as create mirror duplicates of himself. This is a mirror match quite unlike what you're used to!

There's still an entire universe of villainy that we haven't touched upon. Share your wishlist for heroes and villains in the DC Universe Injustice forums. Keep up to date with DC coverage by following @MK_Online and liking us on Facebook.

Wow, beautiful list!!!!!

I have to admit 1 or 2 are partially obscure but hey the other ones literally make up for it, and even the obscure ones I think are pretty kewl like Ragdoll and Prometheus I'd never have thought to included them.

Poison Ivy, Gorilla Grodd, Mirror Master, and Scarecrow are just pure GENIUS, and I'd be VERY proud of NRS to figure a way to work them in!!!

WOW I'm VERY happy with those picks, 4 are my exact TOP-WANTS!!!

RE: Top 10: Gods We Want Among Us - Villains!

I would only change out Ragdoll and Prometheus for Circe and Brainiac, regardless it's an absolutely brilliant list and I do hope that NRS looks at both lists and really works with BOTH in DETAIL. In fact it's the BEST and most well thought-out list to date, compared to ANY other gaming/comic site, literally they did a pretty d@mn good job IMO:

1. Scarecrow - Definitely after his Batman Arkham Asylum game debut he literally creeped me out more than ANY other comic based game ever has. I'd really really, did I say REALLY like to see what the NRS could do with him.

2. Ra's Al Ghul - Before this post I wouldn't have agreed that he'd be a great candidate except for his amazing fighting techniques in Batman Arkham City which I loved his Earthworm Attack lol, but after thinking about how his Lazarus Pits would work DIFFERENTLY for EACH character, WOW that's some amazing ideas like have Poison Ivy throw a seed in it and instead of a basic piranah plant she'd normally grow you get a REALLY HUGE ONE or a PERMANENT ONE which out of the 2 ideas would go with the whole theme! Also it could be used in other ways, say Nightwing could give an ULTRA shock that occasionally throughout the match will shock the opponent if he's able to utilize the Lazarus Pit with his escrima sticks making a life-long shock = "Electroshock Therapy" that occurs every 15 sec. or something for the rest of the match if done right.

3. Sinestro - Well he's kinda expected, with COMPLETELY different powers than that of Green Lantern, so on to the next lol, I don't think anyone can disagree with that one.

4. Black Atom - At first I wouldn't have asked for Black Atom but he's VERY iconic and would be kinda weird not seeing him against his biggest enemy that we know will make the cast, Shazam! I do expect him to have a different moveset though!

5. Gorilla Grodd - Between him and my 11th pick if I was allowed one more, Killer Croc, would make one heck of a DLC pack together, you can't deny this: DC's King Kong vs. Godzilla Pack; yet both could really bring a lot of potential BEYOND the whole bruteness concept. Gorilla Grodd could mental control the opponent in many ways to make up for his slowness, yet could utilize trees/polls/lamposts/watertowers QUICKLY in the background for attacks similar to that of Beast in X-Men Next Dimension which I thought was totally amazing/well-done when they did it. Killer Croc would be the rather faster brute character and be even MORE fast underwater.

6. Amazo - Before this Most Wanted Villain List, I wouldn't have added him, but after further looking into him, he's pretty well our Taskmaster, Seth, Shujinko, Super Skrull type character and a PERFECT candidate, which I think goes well with ANY fighting game, as long as it doesn't get too carried away! If I was to trade him off it would be for Killer Croc followed by an expected Black Manta and my oddball pick Queen Bee, her stage of Korll would be pretty wild/unique/not expected yet loved, her hive that is.

7. Poison Ivy - No question about her, she's a must, too many ideas for her to just throw away or wait on. Actually I kinda expect her, also THANX MKO for adding my favorite comic character of all time as my favorite number of all time, she's now my "Lucky 7" and hopefully will have the luck to make the roster, lol, anyhow next!

8. Ragdoll - I'd change out for Brainiac. Even though not a bad pick, yet not too well known plus I'd really like to see Plasticman take the expected contortionist spot. I think that Brainiac is well-known and would be this game's Venom style character yet more up-to-date than that of Ragdoll, yet again he's not a bad choice at all.

9. Prometheus - Even though still a pretty good pick, I'd change out for Circe for one more female that's rather unique and kinda expected being her popularity has definitely increased throughout the years, and possibly the most well-known Wonder Woman villain/villainess. Plus Aeaea Island would make one heck of a stage with animals roaming around in it, than again I'd take Prometheus without a problem!

10. Mirror Master - I have to agree probably the MOST unique/manageable of ALL characters, THINK Noob Saibot vs. Psylocke +++ literally! He could even absorb projectiles/energy and use it in his own way or even ricochet it, he could teleport, teleport projectiles where it hits opponent from behind, he could utilize his shadow to confuse the opponent or do ANYTHING that Noob Saibot could do and BETTER, and he could even use his shadow to the effect of how Zero did in MvC3. I have to agree that he makes MORE sense than ANY other character.

My only other 3 villains I'd pick if allowed 3 more, like mentioned above would be Killer Croc, Black Manta, and Queen Bee. Regardless, I like how they actually THOUGHT about the overall gameplay and picked characters that would SHOCK us with their abilities, if this whole BACKGROUND concept works way better than MK4's objects, X-Men Next Dimension, Tao Feng, MKD's deathtraps objects, and if done right than these really are PERFECT candidates regardless if you like them or not, you got to admit!!! Amazing job MKO!

RE: Top 10: Gods We Want Among Us - Villains!

The list is kinda weak IMHO

I would say:

1) Bane - this one is a no brainer. He is build for fighting. He will appear in the new Batman movie, so WB will push him into the cast.

2) Lobo - this guy just oozes coolness. And he can go one on one with Superman.

3) Senistro - only one that I actually liked from the list. And plus he is Green Lantern's main nemesis.

4) Doomsday - probably a good boss. But wouldn't mind him being a playable character.

5) Parasite - DC's Shang Tsung?

6) Jason Todd as Red Hood - a great villain that should get more exposure.

7) Talia al Ghul - would love her in the game.

8) Cheshire - also a great super villian that should get more exposure.

9) Metallo

10) Darksein

That's it

Well, I just can't approve this list either. What rule did blacksaibot quite exactly disobey when he stated his opinion on this "Top Ten List of MKO"?

This isn't MKO's official opinion; moderators and staff were the only people who chose those. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, et cetera...

Nevertheless. Claiming them to be "Curveballs" doesn't make a good excuse either. I'm not complaining for the hell of it or because I wouldn't have made the list exactly as it is now but for clear reasons. I don't even tend to bring everything up. Is this "Injustice: Gods Chose Them 4 Us"?

I still will champion Atrocitus over Sinestro, though I won't complain if Sinestro's in instead.

Atrocitus has the whole blood-barfing thing, is a much larger character (making him less of a model swap), plus the Red Lanterns are high in profile right now, having their own book and serving as the chief antagonists for the cartoon. Sinestro's currently a Green Lantern himself.

Of course who I REALLY want is Dex-Starr, but face it, that wouldn't happen.

Requests like this come up a lot...and came up a lot back in the MKvsDCU hype days too...so I'd just like to point out that Watchmen characters are NOT actually DC universe characters. DC just happened to publish the book. Rorschach and Batman don't exist in the same world.

It's like saying that because Marvel used to publish Transformers and G.I. Joe comics, Optimus Prime and Snake Eyes should be in the next MvC. Or that Spidey and Wolverine should be in Kingdom Hearts because Disney owns Marvel. (Although come to think of it, that last one could actually happen given the premise of the game...I mean, they did a Tron stage...)

RE: Top 10: Gods We Want Among Us - Villains!

Well they did say that there's a lot of villains they missed and would've added but for other reasons they didn't, pretty much the given is already announce or we know will be, I think their's is pretty up-to-date and diverse. I don't see Atrocitus getting in BEFORE Sinestro, he is amazing and would be highly appreciated but he's not as iconic and I don't see them putting any other ring character in the same top 10 list. Black Atom's been getting a lot of attention as well. Both Scarecrow/Poison Ivy are definitely the top 2 requested other Bat-Villains besides Bane, with Ra's Al Ghul making a lot of since as well. I'm sure Bane would be next but we already got Solomon Grundy, yes he's not only a Bat-Villain but is quite comparable to Bane, hopefully DLC will help him or Killer Croc yet even he was highly requested for MKvsDCU and barely missed the cut, so I'd kinda expect him over Bane. There are quite a few people that had interest in both Gorilla Grodd and Mirror Master and both have very amazing abilities that could take this game to a whole another level. I'd say the only 2 possibly obscure choices are Ragdoll and Prometheus, even Amazo would fit the game very well and possibly change people's minds.

I have to agree with Razor that the Watchmen wouldn't really fit and would be kinda weird, yet DLC could be a possibility but I hope they stick with the main DC Universe-type characters; leave DLC for characters like Swamp Thing in which they have crossed paths with the main 7 or related characters.

You make a solid point but you are forgetting that DC already published a Watchmen video game. I don't believe in this game that everyone has to be a part of the same universe, because we already had mk's universe collide with dc's. Watchmen as DLC is probably the biggest probability of them making it in the video game but I will not be surprised at all to see them make the initial game. These characters are definitely fighting game worthy. Rorschach pulling off sickening bone breaking moves and using makeshift weapons out of his environment, Nite Owl II's suit has plenty of capabilities, Ozymandius has near superhuman abilities and intelligence, and then of course you have Dr. Manhattan who you would have to tame his powers but could easily blame it on Tachyons.

All I'm saying is is that these Characters deserve a shot in a mainstream game such as this. It's been long overdue. You don't have to add them all but at least one would be nice.

And it was self-contained, set in its own universe, where Superman and Batman don't exist, so what does that have to do with anything?

Well your belief is wrong. MKvsDCU was a crossover game. This is not a crossover, it's just DCU characters.

Rorschach won't be in Injustice for the same reason Jill Valentine or Megaman ain't gonna be in the next Street Fighter. Street Fighter isn't MvC and Injustice isn't MKvsDCU.

I disagree rorshach could easily be in as DLC. When asjed if MK chatacters would b in boon said its possible that th3pey could have guest DLC. There are ways for him to make it in. As for him being canon no wont be.

Well DLC guest characters is a different subject I suppose. But when the game isn't even anywhere near release yet, that's just counting your chickens before they hatch. I think we should worry about the actual starting roster, the characters the game is actually about, until the final list is released, then we can worry about DLC.

Besides, Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and Freddy were nice bonuses to MK9, but no voice actors, no alt costumes, and no appearances in the story mode has a way of saying "these guys aren't important, pay no real attention to them."

With the New 52 I want to see a female villain. Darkseid is sooooo overused. Let's replace him with a female villain like Lady Styx. I also really dislike Captain Marvel and think he and his story are really lame. I also don't understand how Grundy makes the game more interesting. He's just a zombie who will add little to the storyline. Or little compared to that of Bane, Lobo, or Brainiac.

You made it sound as if DC could do nothing but publish Watchmen books. I was pointing out the contrary. Not the fact that it's an alternate universe.
