Perfect Legend Defends Title at Evo Championship 2012!

More than 65,000 online viewers tuned in to witness the conclusion of a second big year of Mortal Kombat at the Las Vegas Evo Championships. For those who did it in 2011, scenes of deja vu must have set in as Perfect Legend Carl White secured a successful defense of the Evo World Championship he won in 2011, defeating CD Jr in a confident 3-1 Grand Final victory!

Perfect Legend was absent from the 2012 Evo Series tournaments that CD Jr dominated early in the year. The pair recently met in the rival Pro Circuit series, finalists at June's MLG Spring Championship -- where CD Jr suffered one of his few major defeats of the year. The Evo 2012 rematch earned Perfect Legend a majority share of the $23,000 prize purse for the MK field. He was the only 2011 finalist to return to the top eight.

CD Jr didn't walk away empty handed, and is reported to be featured in a documentary filmed at the event by Mortal Kombat parent company, Warner Brothers. Tournament winner, Perfect Legend, spoke to Gamespot shortly after the event, in his own interview spotlight:

A diverse range of characters were represented by an equally interesting gallery of tournament rogues. A US dominated field was broken by A f0xy Grampa of the UK, who finished equal 13th. Also present in the final sixteen, the other brothers of the well known Dominican trio, Crazy Dominican (13th) and Maxter (9th).

VSM REO was a shock exit early in the tournament, failing to make the final sixteen. REO played second to CD Jr throughout the Road to Evo, before charging ahead to finish top seed with 185pts. REO earned title victories at Final Round XV, Toryuken 2012, CEO 2012 and was Runner-Up at Winter Brawl VI.

Xblades (5th) made waves in the early stages, bumping CD Jr into the losers bracket in a shock result, before losing out in a relegation rematch. Pig of the Hut (3rd) put Xblades in the losers bracket in an impressive performance, delivering a zoning Kenshi able to quash a threat scare, before dominating game 2 to a fatality. Pig was shunted into a CD Jr losers bracket rempage by an exciting three-match tie with Perfect Legend. Hut demolished Legend's Kung Lao with a surprisingly deft Mileena, but the Champion was able to get a read in the final rubber, responding on the Rooftop stage with skill.

Winners Bracket Semi Final:
Pig of the Hut (Kenshi) d. EGP XBlades (Liu Kang) 2-0 2-0 2-0
EMP|KN Perfect Legend (Kung Lao) d. CoCo Forever King (Sonya, Kung Lao) 2-0 2-0 2-0

Top 8 Losers Bracket Rounds 1-3:
vVv|NOS CD Jr (Kabal) d. CoCo m2dave (Freddy) 2-0 2-1 2-1
IGL MIT (Johnny Cage) d. EGP Tyrant (Jax) 2-0 2-0 2-0
vVv|NOS CD Jr (Jax, Kabal) d. EGP XBlades (Liu Kang) 2-1 2-0 1-2 2-0

vVv|NOS CD Jr (Kabal) d. IGL MIT (Scorpion, Stryker) 2-0 2-0 2-0

Winners & Losers Bracket Final:
EMP|KN Perfect Legend (Kung Lao) d. Pig of the Hut (Mileena) 2-1 0-2 2-0 2-0
vVv|NOS CD Jr (Kabal) d. Pig of the Hut (Mileena, Kenshi) 2-1 2-0 1-2 2-1

2012 Evo Championship Grand Final:
EMP|KN Perfect Legend (Kung Lao) d. vVv|NOS CD Jr (Rain, Kabal) 3-1 2-0 2-0 1-2 2-0

vVv|NOS CD Jr battles EMP|KN Perfect Legend in the Evo Championship Grand Final!

CD Jr surprised many by avoiding the perfect match of his Jax against PL's tried and true Kung Lao. Rain proved ineffective in the Living Forest, dazed and confused by fast-paced teleports that continued throughout the match.

Fighting to the finish in the appropriate arena of Kahn's Koliseum, Kabal delivers CD Jr to a promising third match win. Hard style corner pressure was able to minimize the impact of a Kung Lao that had his way with the screen. Alas; in the fourth game, the same could not be said. Perfect Legend rises to become one for the record books -- a back-to-back champion of Mortal Kombat, 2011 and 2012!

2012 Evo Championship Final Top Sixteen:
1. EPM|KN Perfect Legend (Kung Lao)
2. vVv|NOS CD Jr. (Kabal, Jax, Rain)
3. Pig of the Hut (Kenshi, Mileena)
4. IGL MIT (Johnny Cage, Reptile, Scorpion, Stryker)
5. EGP XBlades (Liu Kang)
5. CoCo FOREVER KING (Kung Lao, Sonya, Kenshi)
7. EGP Tyrant (Jax)
7. CoCo m2dave (Freddy Krueger)
9. EGP KrayzieBone (Cyrax)
9. CURBOLICOUS (Johnny Cage)
9. VSM Maxter (Cyrax, Johnny Cage)
9. KN DetroitBalln'313 (Kabal, Smoke)

13. GGA Osu16bit (Kitana)

This concludes the 2012 Evo Championship Series!

Total devastation! Proving Kung Lao is still a worthy threat in MK despite his nerfs!

I didn't watch the tournament, but they said he straight up did not lose once? Damn, I agree with you SubMan. He definitely DOES deserve this win. I just now watched the final and he dominated. Holy shit.

Shao Kahn did nothing wrong

RE: Perfect Legend Defends Title at Evo Championship 2012!

So far I've only seen the grand finals, but it seems like Perfectlegend was just completely on point. I was a little disappointed CDJR didn't go with jax as his Kabal didn't seem all that good (at least compared to his jax) but I'm not sure what the match up is for jax and kung lao.

Also I think he made a really, really bad call going with Rain for the first match as he pretty much just wasted a game. As much as I love watching a good Rain I think that character naturally has a hard time against kung lao and is just a really inconsistent character in general since he's so ridiculously difficult to play as. I kind of see him as a gamble and gambling in the grand finals against a player like Perfectlegend is not a good strategy. Of course part of this is just me being butt hurt about my own experiences with Rain, haven't seen enough of CDJR's yet.

And I'm really interested in finding out more about the Warner Brothers MK documentary or whatever it was that CDJr was featured in. Sounds cool

RE: Perfect Legend Defends Title at Evo Championship 2012!

Speaking of Rain, I was also surprised when F0xy Grampa switched from Cage to Rain against KrayzieBone's Cyrax (Day 1, Top 12 qualifier). He went up 1-0 and then when Krayzie got back to 1-1, I was sure F0xy was going to switch to Sonya. Isn't she great for fighting Cyrax? Her rings recover faster then his bombs and net and then up-close she's insane. I was really surprised there.

Anyway, back to PL, nice interview with GameSpot. It's interesting to hear him say he's hoping for MK to return for Evo next year as well. I doubt that's going to happen though. I'd say the main reason is the MLG events draining players from grassroots tournaments which then end up having low number of entries for MK. I'm not sure if Mr.Wizard only looks at community tournaments when making a decision or he might also take MLG events as a reference to how much support there is for a fighter. Hopefully it's the later case, I'd love to see MK achieve a hat-trick! I'm also not sure how big a part is Injustice going to play. If the release date is going to be post-Evo 2013 (likely) then it'd be a shame if some players simply quit MK waiting for Injustice to come out.

Back to PL again and the GameSpot interview. I must now go check his match with GGA MOE30W since he brought him up in the interview and the Ermac match-up which he personally finds tricky for KL. Finally, interesting to hear him say he doesn't mind getting hit by Kabal's enhanced Nomad Dash while trying to get in, as he doesn't mind the trade (Kabal uses a bar of meter and doesn't get much damage).

I have more to post regarding the whole weekend, but I have to go through my notes first.

Awesome stuff by PL. Proved that he is truly a "Perfect Legend", by winning EVO twice in a row.

RE: Perfect Legend Defends Title at Evo Championship 2012!

Huge congrats to PL. That was an unbelievable performance.

Evo was amazing. My initial opponent in pools no-showed, so my first official set was against GGA Fill Pops, and I was not optimistic at all. I saw Slips play him in the arcade ladder on stream, so I knew what I was getting into. However, the set ended up going to match point for both of us, and even though I lost, I am incredibly proud of my performance. Being able to hold my own against one of the GGA guys is far more rewarding than bodying a handful of pot monsters. Good game, dude.

I forget his name, but the guy who eliminated me was a Cyber-Sub player. Didn't see that coming, lol. Nonetheless, props to him. After eating the third dive kick and the second slide, he got in my head, and it was kinda over after that. I have all the matches filmed, BTW. The Fill Pops vid cuts out before the end, but suffice to know that I lost.

The people were great. I got to meet 16-Bit after I played my pool, and he was very cool to talk to. I wanted to talk briefly about KTP, but my mind just blanked. I miss the hell out of that show. I also spoke to Pig briefly. We didn't talk much, but he seemed like a really nice guy.

Then there were the familiar faces from Texas Showdown such as Pboard Player and What's-Her-Name. Cool seeing those two again. It's always a pleasure seeing Starcharger as well. He bodied me in casuals, but fun nonetheless.

Huge props to my hotel mates, Jacob and Devin. Without those guys, I would have canceled the trip.

I do have a couple of gripes with how the event was run, but the good far overshadows the bad. I really wish I could have watched more MK matches, but I was entered in 3 games (FYI, I had some SF4 success as well). Also, I have really bad feet, and my feet got wrecked throughout the 3 day event. I could only do so much standing. I don't think I'll be going next year, but since I'll be putting quite a bit of work into DOA5 and TTT2, who knows.

Ya know, I said I was going because I wanted to support MK, but after some introspection, I think the real reason is that I just love my characters so damn much and I wanted to represent them. Smoke and Rose till death.

New sig on the way

Good to have you back! I was getting worried you got lost in Vegas.

LOL! Looking at the brackets (your pool: K17), his name is Charles Maidman aka Chicagoroyal.

Me too! I would love to hear one more post-Evo episode! It's probably not going to happen though.

Which character eliminated your Rose from SF4? Btw, I have bad feet too! lol

Haha! Love it when players are passionate about the characters they play! You also got back just in time to vote for Smoke!

Much drama came out from that match lol. I checked it out, the Dominican guy played a really nice Sektor. Cool corner set-ups as well as homing missile set-ups.

I know I said I was going to post more about Evo, but laziness got the better of me.
