MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

This is purely speculative, how do you think MKX is going to stack up against Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 5 once they are released? This is in terms of gameplay, graphics, roster, maintaining the series' tone but also adding new improvements, overall impression, tournament scene, and anything else you can think of.

Side note: now that MKX has done exceedingly well for NRS, do you think they'll continue straight to MK11, or switch over to Injustice 2?

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

Honestly, it's apples to oranges.

Tekken, for example is "deeper"...at least according to Tekken experts. It has a very devoted audience.

Street Fighter, one could say the same - it has "deeper" mechanics and a steeper learning curve.

Personally? I couldn't give a shit about either of those franchises.

Neither will ever have the appeal of the characters of Mortal Kombat, the lure of the setting of Mortal Kombat, or - and let's face it, there would have never been a franchise beyond MK1 without it - the violence level of MK. But for me it goes deeper than that.

I have always been loyal to MK. I've always loved the characters and their stories, as well as the overall story of MK lore. Tekken and SF? Those games never last more than a week for me. I get bored as fuck with them. The characters are so mundane and generic. The story is so bland, a pure afterthought. They cater to the Japanese gaming audience - they are ultra obsessive with SF and Tekken, whereas a game like Mortal Kombat in Japan is almost instantly lambasted because it's an American game.

I find the learning curve of MK easier but still a challenge. I won't master every character, but I'll have 2 or 3 that I just completely master. And I will continue to play Mortal Kombat, daily. It's been 2 months since release, and I still play the shit out of it. Every other game I have has been backburneredd indefinitely.

But, the Tekken/Street Fighter elitists will always scoff at MK. It will never be as "professional" or "legit" as those games. I say, fuck you - keep your boring ass Jin Kazama, your stereotypical and boring Ryu...I'll take Sub-Zero and Raiden any day of the week over them.

MKX will ultimately fail in comparison to those 2, because MK has a much more loyal and devoted fan base. We are a special breed. It's a success among MK fans, and that's all that matters.

Well, you all got your Tremor now. Can we finally move on?

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

Like what the other guy said, apples to oranges, different fanbases.

I personally don't like Tekken, besides Tekken 4, because every game feels the same and characters have the same moves. I like that MK changes it up every so often. I'll get Tekken 7 though.

Street Fighter is growing on me a bit, but I wish there was a better story rather than have stereotypes thrown left and right...I see that a lot in Japanese games actually (Bob in Tekken 6? Lucky Chloe?).

I might consider checking other fighting games like Samurai Shodown, Marvel vs Capcom, and SNK vs Capcom, those look pretty decent.

MK is where my heart's at though. Great characters, great lore, music, fun developers.

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

I think MKX has left a great impression in all fronts imo. I have friends who were sworn on Japanese fighting/back to block games only that have crossed over to MK because of MKX and in return, they became intrigued with the story of MK as well. With that said, the amount of support NRS is giving the game with streaming tournaments and helping out with the prize pools with the classic sub skin and whatnot has garnered interest the competitive scene. Not to mention that variations gives the game a lot of mileage and depth to match ups.

Graphically Tekken 7 looks ridiculous and since both SF and Tekken are using UE4, It's not really a fair comparison lol. Part of me hopes that they go straight into the next MK game but at the same time, I don't want the game's quality to suffer because of time constraints and rushing to get the game out so I'd rather see another injustice first.

Thanks for the sig MINION!

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

In terms of graphics Tekken 7 leads the pack, without question. SF5 will depend on the art style. MKX still has very good graphics but some textures look off sometimes.

In terms of roster, Tekken 7 hasn't been received very well. Many of the new characters aren't well liked. And I 'm still waiting for Miguel, Bob, and Kuma.

I have no clue what to expect from SF5's roster, so that should be interesting.

Mechanically, both Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 5 are doing new things. Tekken 7 added Rage Arts and Power Crushes. While Street Fighter 5 has V-Skill, V-Reversal, and V-Trigger. It will be cool to see how these change the way the games are played.

MKX tried Variations to diversify match-ups, but ultimately they aren't used the way they were intended. Still a fun thing though.

In terms of soundtrack, MK will be dead last once again.

I think MKX will do well against the other 2 though. Tekken is struggling and is desperate to attract new players. Street Fighter 5 being console exclusive to PS4 hurts sales in total, so the playerbase will be smaller. In terms of sales I think MK will be just fine.

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

Obviously most if not all of us will be biased in our answers, but ofc I will say MK. The darker tone, and art makes it way better in terms of a visual settings to Tekken or SF.

The characters, and story far outweigh anything SF/Tekken ever did, the story and growth of characters is non existent in those franchises. Same old same old every iteration.

I became an MK fan for the violence, and most importantly the story. Sub-Zero, Scorpion, etc etc have done more in 1 game then Ryu or JIn have done in 7.

Mk forever, as long as us real fans love it, doesn't matter what others think.

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

I do not know the gameplay idiosyncrasies of Tekken since I have never played a Tekken game. I like the gameplay of MKX the most out of any Mortal Kombat game while what has been shown of Street Fighter V does not impress me. The game is just too slow.

Graphically Tekken 7 looks the best from videos I have seen with Street Fighter V the worst in my opinion.

MKX has got a good roster in my opinion while with Tekken 7 I have seen a lot of complaints from fans. Not enough characters have been revealed for Street Fighter V to make a judgement to be honest.

Overall impression is that Mortal Kombat X is at the apex of the franchise's history while the other two are just coming along. Sales wise I think MKX will sell more than either Street Fighter V or Tekken 7 easily. Capcom expect 2 million sales from Street Fighter V which is MKX has probably already passed and the last Tekken game TTT2 sold only 1.5 million units which is unimpressive.

Really? I wasn't really impressed with the footage I saw online. I thought MKX had way more vivid backgrounds, better lighting effects, and more realistic looking characters. Tekken's visuals just looked kind of dull and cartoonish in comparison (this is coming from an avid Tekken 3 and 5 player).

I know what you mean though about some textures being off, like the sweat and dirt effects.

I think Tekken has been the best looking fighting game series since Tekken 4. I'd say MK has better stages, but Tekken's character models are much better. Plus the fluidity of the game itself really makes the game look smooth.

Plus Tekken using UE4 means better graphics by default.

^^^ Ah, I don't think I'm familiar with that engine. Still seems like the lighting effects are noticeably better in MK from stage to stage. I guess I'll have to see Tekken on a regular console before I make a final verdict.

I know street fighter came first, but I've never understood how it can compete with mk, let alone be a lot bigger in terms of sales/popularity. At least in Japan. I personally think street fighter is insanely overrated, it's just way too cartoony, I just think it's mediocre. The 100 different versions of street fighter 4 certainly doesn't help their argument. IMHO tekken is the only competition to MK in terms of graphics gameplay, and roster. Some people prefer tekken because of the fact it's practical martial arts, different characters with different styles Etc. If I made a chart it would say MK>tekken>street fighter.. one more time in case I forgot street fighter sucks

The more devoted a fan base, the more they bitch and moan.

And remember - MK5.org does not represent the vast majority of the fan base. It's a tiny sliver, or a barely noticeable fraction if that. While it seems there are a lot of people who participate here, a huge majority of people can't be bothered with the childish bullshit on video game forums, so they steer clear.

That's not true. Before mastering UE4 developers need months, if not years, as every new game engine.using a heavily modified version of UE 3.5 could give a graphic edge in the short term.

The footage I saw of Tekken 7 was unimpressive and I think MKX character models with realistic blood, tore clothes, bruises and sweat are overall better.

That's true. It does take some time to really get a new engine down pat. However, based on what I've seen I'd say Tekken 7 looks better. And it'll look even better when it goes to console.

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

I don't know if anyone thought the same but, I never saw MK as a competitor to Street Fighter. I always saw The King of Fighters as the real threat to Street Fighter's success if anything, the games both have similar gameplay and art styles that directly competes with one another.

MK is an entirely different game from those two. For one IMO, every MK game is unique and plays differently from the previous title, and also has things not found in Tekken, SF, and Kof such as different movesets for characters, new play styles, and new character designs in EVERY new Mortal Kombat title. You can't say the same for the others as they're the same game as they were 20 years ago except for some new additions to the gameplay.

For me it's
MK>Kof>Tekken
I didn't bother to include SF as it's never interested me and is just bland and boring in comparison to the others. #teamMK

I will be getting T7 and SF5 but I can say with 100% certainty that I will not like them as much as I do MKX. I like Tekken and Street Fighter, but they (to me) are MK's less talented, less interesting, and less fun siblings. I pretty much use SF just to change things up every once in a while lol

I know most people think SF is "the best" fighting franchise ever but I do not, maybe its because I gravitated towards MK more as a kid and liked its controls better. I also played it a great deal more but to me MK just plays so much better, the characters are so much better, the music and stages are so much better, just everything is better IMO. As for Tekken I haven't played one since Tekken 3 when I was like 8 years old lol

RE: MKX vs. Tekken 7/ Street Fighter 5

I haven't really looked at Tekken 7 so far but all I can say is that maybe side by side the models of Tekken 7 will look better than MKX's models, but Tekken doesn't have bruises, sweat, cuts, dirt and everything that makes MKX's models so dynamic. It doesn't matter if Jin's chest is more defined and sharp than Liu Kang's. Liu Kang looks much more dynamic while fighting.

I used to be a big Tekken fan but I don't care as much nowadays. The franchise hasn't moved since Tekken 3. The characters are always dressed the same and the story revolves around 40 character doing nothing and the Mishima fighting each others. I'll probably buy it ayway.

I was a MK kid on the SNES. I played a bit of Street Fighter but always came back to MK2. That being said, I loved SF4 and I'll definitely pick up SF5. I love the art style the game has and with everyone now having special abiltiies, it'll make the game ever deeper. Of course I'll pick it up.

I think they are referring to the fact that the characters have the same base moveset in every game. Same for Tekken really.

But I like that. You know what sucks about MK? Having to relearn characters. Every. Fucking. Game.

I spent a fuck load of time learning Kung Lao. But guess what? If he's in the next game, all that time I spent learning him in MKX won't carry over at all. I have to waste time relearning him.

It's cool that MK is constantly changing, but sometimes it's not always for the best. MK has this thing about innovation, whereas SF and Tekken have a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. And I honestly prefer SF and Tekken's way. They just add on to something already good rather than reinvent the wheel.

I love MKX, but I would've been totally fine with MK9 but with MKX characters.

And this is the reason why SF fans are so condescending towards the MK fans. They say the most ignorant shit and are impressed by shallow and cosmetical shit but rarely ever care about gameplay. But MK has several modes like Chess Kombat and Motor Kombat OMFGz!!!!111

And SF1 plays nothing, and looks nothing like SF4, nor does it have an even remotely similar roster, unlike MKX which has 9 out of 10 MK1 characters playable, you may have mistaken SF1 for SF2, the one that revolutioned the genre and got everything rippedoff by MK, and several other games.
