Mortal Kombat X Wins Best Fighting Game Award

The unveiling of new characters may have been the headline attraction for Mortal Kombat X fans, but the developers had more to celebrate during 2015's The Game Awards - taking 2015 Best Fighting Game!

Skip to 33:38 to watch Ed Boon's interview.

Series co-creator and NetherRealm Studios Creative Director Ed Boon accepted the award, appearing during the live pre-show. He described the accolade as "a beautiful, very, very heavy trophy" and a "cherry" on top of their year.

Mortal Kombat X was a strong favourite in its only nominated award category, unchallenged by its established franchise rivals. The 2015 Warner Brothers juggernaut bested cult opposition: Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-, Rise of Incarnates and Rising Thunder

Asked about fan reaction to Mortal Kombat X, Boon noted the phenomenon of the highest selling iteration of the long running series: "It's been amazing". The immediacy of support made Mortal Kombat X the highest selling game for mid-year 2015 after just two months [full story]!

Fan reaction continued to amaze with the official reveal of Kombat Pack 2 downloadable content. While many reported not seeing the advertised exclusive trailer during The Game Awards show, its online release generated strong reactions.

Mortal Kombat Online congratulates NetherRealm Studios on their award. Will their success continue in 2016? Register to discuss all the developing stories on the Mortal Kombat X forum! Spread the love by liking and sharing stories via @MK_Online & Facebook!

I guess I'll start that off. But I'll preface by saying NRS still deserved the award regardless. Despite the flaws and bad netcode, I did enjoy MKX for a good while. The story cinematic quality remains unrivaled by any other fighting game and no one does content like NRS.

But the lack of competition is a completely fair thing to say if you ask me. GG is extremely niche to the point where people don't even know the game exists. Rise of the Incarnates wasn't really a fighting game anyway, and Rising Thunder is still in alpha. MKX ran away with this one.

But had SFV or Tekken 7 come out this year... The race would've been way closer that's for sure. But congrats NRS. It was well deserved even if you crushed my hopes into dust with MK's future.

Well deserved and the game was a massive commercial success as well unlike the others it was going up against. In fact I do not think any fighting game will match MKX's sales. 5 million in six months is a lot. Great to see Mortal Kombat right up there at the top.

Competition or not it was very well deserved definitely the best MK game ever albeit with the worst roster and dlc choices ever (but that's just my opinion).

Congratulations to NRS just wish they made better choices for dlc so I could continue to play the game but alas I think it's time for me to hang up the game for a while.

MKX is a great experience of a fighting game. Flawed and no where near perfect, but still great none-the-less and the best of the year. NRS totally deserved their award and the success they achieved this year.

The game is great, but the concorrence this year was also inconsistent.
It seems that Mk X was putted there as the only credible winner.
Deserved, but I'd wish for less guests as dlc.

Let's see how good SF5 will sell.
