Big Mortal Kombat XL News Coming Says Boon

The "Komplete Edition" disc release of Mortal Kombat XL may have come a mere four months ago, but that hasn't stopped a loud clamor from rabid Mortal Kombat fans hungry for more!

The seemingly endless apetite for content led to confusion this month, but according to the lead developer, there is still "big" Mortal kombat XL news coming sometime in the future.

Hints at an Evo announcement from series figurehead Ed Boon had many convincing themselves a major development was coming at the July tournament. The Creative Director cleared up the confusion [above], confirming NetherRealm "[n]ever planned it for EVO."

While some gaming sites capitalized on hopeful speculation -- fueling it in the process -- MK Online readers knew the tease was quickly followed by an Evo cash prize bonus. $50,000 awarded to 2016 Evo World Champion SonicFox, this passing weekend.

Boon himself contributed slightly to the speculative white noise, polling fans on a selection of characters who could use "buff" improvements to their gameplay. This follows previous post-game polls regarding; most missed kombat men, most missed female fighters, and NetherRealm's next project.

Sub-Zero took 35% of 9,268 votes, beating Kenshi (29%), Kitana (21%) and Kung Lao (15%) amongst standard playable characters. Tremor won a DLC character vote with of 9,017 responses, beating guest Jason Voorhees (25%), Bo' Rai Cho (24%) and Goro (20%).

It seems NetherRealm Studios is impervious to much of the suspicion and resentment that still dogs corporations like Capcom, whose repeated rereleases of Street Fighter have always been a notorious cycle.

As downloadable content channels become further ingrained in the game expereince, so too are consumers increasingly willing to extend play with micro purchases. Mortal Kombat X continued add-on characters and content to the most of any NetherRealm fighter, thus far. MKX also introduced in-game purchases for basic functions, such as fatalities [read more].

NetherRealm Studios are currently in development on a DC Comics fighting game sequel - Injustice 2. Ed Boon will be a panel guest to unveil two new characters this week at San Diego Comic-Con. A Mortal Kombat X webseries was announced in 2014, but has yet to be released [read more].

I never know why I hold out miniscule hope for future characters but I will until they outright tell me there aren't anymore coming/Injustice 2 comes out I guess.

My best guess is another patch but at the absolute least I hope for a few more skins. Shinnok needs another and so does all the DLC.

This is great news indeed. A balance patch is imminent, as far as content, I'd say one to two characters is the safe bet, but a full blown KP3 would be delightful. Can't wait!

Come on Boon. Make it happen. I miss Noob the most.

If no new characters, at least skins.

I would love to keep my various faction kills when I change factions instead of having to re-earn them all.

Could you add an NPC tower? (including Shinnok)

This is very good news but if this winds up being yet another "Netherrealm is proud to announce that MKXL will be featured in another video game tournament!" I'll bash my head into the wall. Ed's idea of "big" news as of late has revolved entirely around tournaments.

Well, you all got your Tremor now. Can we finally move on?

Another remastered classic stage, please.

And I'll be more than okay with 2 more DLC vs a whole 'nother pack but I'll take it if that's the route they're going. Also, why wasn't there a third klassic fatalities pack? Kano, Liu, Reptile?

I'd rather have Stages over characters honestly.

I think we get Noob and Fujin. A Crossroads stage Fatality and some throw Brutalities added.

The best announcement they could make would be every character has 10 Brutalities and once there preformed they'll appear in your Kollection.

Klassic Fatality packs 2 & 3 would be awesome with alternate costumes for DLC MK characters. I understand the licensing issues with the Horror movie characters.

If I could choose and it wouldn't affect the story or there chances of being in MK 11

Revanant Shao Kahn
Noob
Blaze (smaller super fast version)

Dead Pool would be totally rad. My other favourite is Living Forest. I hadn't actually thought about a returning klassic stage or even a brand new one but either would be good.

The Dead Pool would be so hype.

Honestly though, I'd die for The Warrior Shrine or Kombat Tomb as well even though neither were in MK9.

I reckon its either
- Mortal Kombat XL Steam port.
or
- Mortal Kombat XL Plus (major balancing plus online coming out of Beta)
Or Both?

I kinda doubt Kombat Pack 3 is a thing. Kinda want it.
I mean Smoke is in Triborg, Jade is in Kitana and Tanya, Noob Saibot is a graphical thing for Johnny Cage, Fujin's specials are spread between Kitana, Raiden and test your luck modes.

I mean unless its meant to be a hint as to what is coming for Mortal Kombat Eleven: The Elevening.
Or hell, Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung for the bants. (literally.)

These 3 would make me supremely happy. I always liked the theory that the revenant coming to life in quan chi's fortress was Shao Kahn ala quan chi's mk9 ending.

I imagine guest characters are inevitable for whatever remaining dlc they may have planned.

I can't shake the feeing that all the rcycled move sets in Injustice might mean they are working on both franchises at the same time.

If there ever was a time for another Action/Adventure MK game, it would be now with the new generation of heroes. Those 4 would be pretty well balanced and offer enough variety to make a "MKSM2" very fun! Add classic characters we love and it could even be a story expansion to MKXL.

I just have this feeing. I'm not always right but I just fee like MK is still very much on their table. A story mode and even 50% new roster for IGAU2 doesn't seem like it would take incredibly long.

There's no way MK will wait until 2019 for a new instalment. I say 2018 at best which means we might see another project at E32017.

If there is a Kombat Pack 3, I feel like we'll see Noob, Fujin for sure.

They definitely are working on both at the same time and have been for quite a while. It just sort of shifted. Near the end of MKX's dev cycle in 2014, they likely started with a smaller team on I2. Once MKX released and the first wave of DLC was done, they likely allocated more devs to work on I2 while MKX retained a "skeleton crew" so to speak. So it went from MKX getting all focus, to MKX getting 80% and I2 20%, to 60/40 Injustice 2, and now at the end of the MKXL lifespan, it's probably 90/10 or at the most, 85/15% split. That would explain why the perceived "final DLC" is taking longer than it normally would, since the MKXL dev team has had most of its major programmers moved to I2.

That said, I would love an MK adventure game at this point. I recently picked up Mad Max during the PS4 mid-year sale, and thoguht to myself that an MK game could possibly fit into a game like this conceptually (minus the cars/driving aspect). Ultimately though I prefer to see the next installment of the fighting franchise before an adventure game.

I'm thinking 2019 is probably the timeframe for the next MK. They're planning on extending support for MKX so it'll probably continue to be supported into 2017, and at that point it'd be a solid 2 year dev cycle for the next MK in 2019.

I also believe, based on those polls from a few weeks back, Noob and Jade may make a return in the perceived final DLC if there is any.

Well, you all got your Tremor now. Can we finally move on?

See, I'm aware of the shifting Dev cycles but this just seems different. It was either an exec decision to make I2 more like SF/Tekken with returning strings and normals or it's because they are trying to balance it with something. Perhaps just creatively to set it apart from MK?

Not sure but something seems different.
