Anniversary: More Concept Art from Atomhawk Design

Mortal Kombat may be brand new to the PlayStation Vita this month [full story], but the reboot title officially celebrated its first anniversary at the end of April!

Adding to the continuing retrospective; Atomhawk Design have released a follow-up wave of concept resources, expanding the gallery of their contributions to the hugely successful title with images of Kintaro, The Armory, Goro's Lair, Evil Monestary and the apocalyptic vista from Sonya Blade's ending!

In kinder, gentler times, children would gather each and every Easter Sunday, enjoying the simple pleasures of an annual hunt for chocolate eggs. These days, you probably more readily identify the tradition of "Easter Eggs" by pop culture's appropriation of hidden extras, and nestled nuggets of reference.

Mortal Kombat has made legendary use of easter eggs, milking a rich canon for hints and allusions, sometimes going so far as to hide kombatants themselves, deep within the game. At the beginning of the week, we talked about the impossible characters who existed in rumor and foolery [full story], but this Easter, the Mortal Kombat Online staff have crammed The Nexus to pick our Top 10 Secret Kharacters!

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Episode #6

Mortal Kombat: Legacy marches onward this week after a two-parter featuring the likes of Shao Kahn, Kitana and Mileena. This week, we see the other side of the coin as Lord Raiden makes his debut in Episode #6.

New Live-Action Character Photo Released!

Thanks to Twitter, the stream of teases and factoids from the cast and crew of April's live-action Mortal Kombat digital series have come thick and fast! Series director, Kevin Tancharoen, has delivered yet another tantalizing message, mere days after sharing images of what appear to be Scorpion and the results of a Spine Rip Fatality!

Warner Announces MK Digital Series Actors!

While Jeri Ryan has thoroughly confirmed her involvement (as Sonya Blade) through frequent activity on her Twitter account [full story], a full press release from Warner Premiere has reconfirmed the return of of Michael Jai White (Spawn, The Dark Knight) as Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs, along with English actor, Darren Shahlavi, in the upcoming digitally distributed series, Mortal Kombat.

Warner Premiere today announced initial casting for their upcoming live-action digital new media series "Mortal Kombat" which is based on the iconic gaming franchise. Jeri Ryan, ("Star Trek: Voyager") will reprise her role as the headstrong "Lieutenant Sonya Blade” from the unofficial fan short. She is joined by Michael Jai White ("The Dark Knight") as "Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs" and Darren Shahlavi ("300") as the sly and cunning "Kano."

Kevin Tancharoen who directed and produced the popular, unofficial "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" fan short (watch below) that garnered over 10 million views worldwide, is bringing the same immersive directing style to this live-action digital new media series. Fans will be able to delve deep into the history of the warriors they know and love including "Sub-Zero" and "Scorpion." Shooting for "Mortal Kombat" is currently underway in Vancouver.

"It's extremely gratifying to have such talented actors playing these iconic roles," said Kevin Tancharoen, Director, Producer and Co-Writer of "Mortal Kombat." "They will bring the essence of 'Mortal Kombat' to life and gamers will be deeply immersed into the game's universe."

"Mortal Kombat" is one of the most celebrated videogame franchises of all time. Since its debut in 1992, it has spawned four arcade games, multiple console-based videogame titles, two movies ("Mortal Kombat" and "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation"), two television series and an animated prequel. Additionally, a new "Mortal Kombat" video game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Ent. will be available April 19, 2011 on the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

Written by Kevin Tancharoen, Aaron Helbing and Todd Helbing, and available online this spring from Warner Bros. Digital Distribution, the "Mortal Kombat" digital new media series is an anthology of multiple live action shorts. Each episode will provide never-before-revealed insights into characters featured in the upcoming videogame as well as the game's universe.

"Mortal Kombat," the newest chapter of the award-winning videogame franchise, will be on store shelves starting April 19th, 2011. Marking a triumphant return to the series' mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic, "Mortal Kombat" will introduce a number of new game-play features including tag team, a deeper story mode and nostalgic online and offline arcade battles. Players will be able to choose from an extensive lineup of iconic warriors and challenge their friends in head-to-head competition as well as several new game modes.

Darren Shahlavi, confirmed to star as longtime rival of Jax and Sonya, Kano, is an English actor featured in films such as 300 and Ip Man 2. In addition, he's no stranger to films video games, having appeared in both Alone in the Dark and BloodRayne, as well as providing motion capture for titles such as GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Dragon Age: Origins, and EA Sports MMA. Shahlavi's martial arts credentials follow up on the emphasis on action from many crew members, which include hints that the longtime rivalry between Kano and Sonya will continue in this project.

Update Feb. 14: Ian Anthony Dale, on break from filming TV series The Event, has joined the Twitter stampede. The actor will step into the covetted role of Hanzo Hasashi -- the ninja who, in the games, becomes Scorpion. On his transition, Dale notes:

Offical Mortal Kombat 2011 Website Launches!

The official website for Mortal Kombat has just been revealed!

After being prompted to choose your character from the selection - Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Mileena, Shao Kahn and Raiden, You are taken to their individual pages which showcase a Render and a small Biography of your chosen warrior! Whilst nothing entirely new is present yet. You can see what appears to be Scorpion's Lair from MK3 as Scorpions background image along with The Bell Tower art and a 6th characters silhouette who has yet to be unlocked.

WB Games Releases Shadows Trailer for Mortal Kombat!

A day after IGN released the "Shadows" teaser trailer for the new Mortal Kombat, WB Games has released an HD-quality non-watermarked version of the trailer. The trailer features several kombatants, seen only by their shadows (hence the trailer name), fighting and finishing each other. The music is Disturbed's "Another Way to Die", off of their fifth album. (Unlike Adema's "Immortal", this song was not created specifically for Mortal Kombat.)

ScrewAttacks Ten Least Favorite MK Fatalities
The folks over at ScrewAttack Have put together a list of what they perceived to be the top ten worst Fatalities in MK's history. In addition to general gripes about Babalities, Frienships, etc. as well as 18 skulls and 32 ribcages in the style of the MK3 era of violence, there are specific finishers they find issue with. Here they are:

    Mortal Kombat Featured On Cover Of Hyper Magazine!

    The official Mortal Kombat Facebook site updated with a few renders of characters from the upcoming Mortal Kombat game posing on the front of EGM and Hyper magazines. As noted earlier, Mortal Kombat was in the most recent issue of EGM and was featured on the cover. The Australian gaming magazine Hyper will be running a story for the game in their August 2010 issue. Scorpion appears on the cover, giving fans a larger glimpse of his look first seen on the select screen during E3.

    IG Interviews Hector Sanchez!

    Another interesting interview from E3 2010 has surfaced, this time featuring Hector Sanchez of Netherrealm Studios taking the questions from IG.
