It's hardly that black and white. People like me actually like quite a few things about some of the newer MK games, including this one. It's just that the overall quality of what was done with the story and characters was more or less another MKSM only with decent overall voice acting.

This complaint wasn't adressed to you. You are pretty rational as far as old storyline fans go.
It was just my feeling about old fanbases in general. Whenever I want to see discussion about the game majority of the posts belong to the haters who say like a broken record: "new game is shit because developers don't create games as in 1997". Not only it's stupid reasoning by itself (why developers should create games in, say, 2011 like they did in 1997?), but it's also reeks of nostalgia filter - mindless and illogical.

You may have had your faith reinvigorated, but MK 2011 made me somewhat glad that I set my expectations low. When I learned what the premise of the story was going to be, I knew it was going to be a disaster like MKSM's story.

I expected MK9 story to turn out much worse than MKSM and MKA. But my worst fears didn't came true. I accept that there were lots of shortcomings and few unneccesary changes (CSZ is not one of them), but in general story was good. At least much better than MKD, MKA and MKvsDC trainwrecks.

I forgot to touch on something you said in your previous post. You said that everything that happened with Sub-Zero in the old timeline in MK1-MK3 happened with him in MK 2011. That's not true. In the old timeline, Bi-Han had taken part in the tournament to assassinate Shang Tsung. Since he failed, the Lin Kuei sent Kuai Liang to finish Bi-Han's mission.

None of that was covered, and instead, Bi-Han's story was retconned to him working alongside Shang Tsung. That might have been acceptable had the story of this game been that of a full-fledged reboot. But since the story of this game actually ties into the stories of the past MK games, it only shows one of several examples of how this game's story fails.

I meant Sub-Zero Junior in general.
And one more thing - Bi Han working for Shang Tsung instead of trying to kill him, most likely result of the MKM retcon, not MK9 one.
As you remember in MKM epilogue Bi Han is hired by Shang Tsung to participate in the tournament. It was never elaborated why he was hired by sorcerer, but it's kind of obvious. Also, it was never stated how it goes along with his MK1 storyline, so it could be said that Bi Han story was already retconned back in MKM and that's exactly where the idea of him, Cyrax and Sektor fighting at the MK tournament on behalf of Shang Tsung is originated.
As a sidenote MKM retcon about Bi Han working for Shang, could've been picked up from the first movie and Journey Begins.

I'm not one of those fans that's negative about nearly everything. I have all sorts of ideas. I'm still a fan of this series, and I'm still into the story and the characters. I just don't like the direction the story is going, and I feel that I have good reasons to not like it. If you want to call my lack of faith as "a shaky basis of hatred", that's on you.

I love the gameplay of the new game. Cyber Sub-Zero's gameplay style is kind of fun. He's not bad at all despite having similar special moves to those of certain other characters. I just feel that since MK is a fighting game series yet has a fairly strong importance given to story and characters, the series should always been producing games that do well in both areas. I feel that's been lacking in the series.

I am kind of lost interest in the story of MK after MKD, because how chaotic and sloppy it was done. MKA and MKvsDC did nothing to ressurect my interest in the story. Well, MKA was interesting, because after that game, writers could finally move on - kill the old crowd, add new characters, reinvent old ones. Of course it was stupid of me to expect radical changes in the roster in the popular fighting game (though MKDA prooved that it's certainly possible). As of now MK9 is interesting for me because I wonder what would happen next. There is all kind of possibilities open for the story and after what happened in MK9 I'm really want to know how everything will play out.

It's always been canon that MK1 was a private tournament you can only attend by invitation. Shang Tsung is obligated as the grandmaster to seek out and invite all of Earthrealm's best martial artists (and he wouldn't skimp on this anyway - he wants the real best fighters so he can steal their souls when they lose)
Shang had to have invited Sub-Zero all along or Sub-Zero could not have been there. And Sub-Zero must be invited because he's one of the world's best fighters.
That's why Sonya and co. were captured for trespassing (albeit in that case, Shang wanted her there and knew she'd never accept an invite because she doesn't care about kung fu tournaments so he had to lure her via Kano).

Thus, being invited does not contradict the idea that Sub-Zero was hired to assassinate Shang and used the tournament as the means to get close to him.
