I think most can agree that WB rescuing the Mortal Kombat brand when Midway tread along its own path of shit to its ultimate demise was one of the best things that ever happened to the franchise, but the major drawbacks of a mega-corporation owning the rights to such a beloved franchise and cultural phenomenon can be too many to count. Perhaps one of the most egregious things that WB could do has now officially happened. As you can see here, tweeted by Johnny Cage himself, Master Daniel Pesina:

WB has taken down the Master Daniel Pesina page here on FB. Infringement rights disagreement. Need to check on this over the next few days.

This is one of the major reasons why the "Kombat Encyclopedia" cannot get off the ground - WB will not allow it, and NRS is powerless to endorse it (which is probably why Ed typically ignores or dodges questions/comments about it).

Now granted, Master Pesina is profiting off of copyrighted images that, while bearing his likeness, are no longer his to claim. Even so, it is a damn shame that they forced facebook to close down his page. I'm sure this is only the beginning, and I truly wonder if Kombat Kon will suffer...perhaps last weekend's Kombat Kon will be the last if WB is now cracking down on unauthorized activities.

What a shame.

There is a pretty good chance that Dan Pesina actually has the legal right to sell those images. I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of the original contract signed between the actors and Midway is that the Midway never had the rights to the actors' likeness to begin with - they had the rights to put them into the game, and that was it. When WB acquired Midway they acquired those portions of the contract as well.

This ultimately means that WB may not have had the legal right to take down Pesina's Facebook page.

It wouldn't be the first time that WB has gone too far with copyright violations takedowns. Last year, WB reported its own site as illegal.

Good point - I know he's consulting with lawyers about it. There are many instances here an actor cannot use their own likeness if it's part of a copyrighted image so I really do wonder what the details of the original Midway agreement were.

You were at this year's Kon, weren't you ]{0MBAT? Shang_Heihachi and Yellowhare both couldn't make it out, and I've been too busy. Hoping to get out there with them next year (if there is a next year).
