Harry Shum Jr Joins Cast of Mortal Kombat Legacy

Harry Shum Joins the Legacy 2 Cast; plus more on Matt Mullins exit as Cage!

The live-action cast of Mortal Kombat: Legacy has added another actor to the second series: Harry Shum Jr confirming his presence on set in the latest news from twitter!

We don't know who the actor is playing, but a certain Shirai Ryu ninja's catch phrase got a mention in the tweet, leaving his affiliations open to speculation. Ian Anthony Dale returned to the series as Scorpion on November 28 [full story], confirming a start to photography.

Director Kevin Tancharoen first announced the second series of the YouTube serial in July, confirming a long list of characters in the process [full story]. The Mortal Kombat tournament itself is said to be a feature, meaning even if Shum filmed with the Scorpion actor, their affiliation may be inconsequential. Dan Southworth also joined the cast this week.

In an interview with Shogun Gamer, departing cast member Matt Mullins elaborated on the circumstances of his exit as Johnny Cage. It seems the part has been recast, continuing an on-screen tradition for the fictional actor-cum-kombatant who was similarly recast for the 1997 feature sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

They requested footage from films that I worked on this last year which I gave them, and then they wanted me to actually read again for the second season. So I read and I auditioned for the same part as I did in season 1. Then they basically decided to go in another direction. - Matt Mullins on Cage recasting [via Shogun Gamer]

Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Tahmoh Penikett (Kurtis Stryker) and Jolene Tran (Mileena) have also been ruled out of returning for the second series. Sam Tjhia, who appeared as Kitana in Episodes 4 and 5, teased a possible return [via Twitter].

harry Shum Jr is a dancer, who already worked with Kevin in dancing movies like Glee and Street Dance fighters or something like that.

We are leaving home good actors (Jeri Ryan) and excellent martial artists (Matt Mullins, Jolene tran) just to hire...dancers (Harry SHum) and low budget stuntmen with no REAL acting skill (Dan Southworth).

I throw my prediction: MK legacy 2 will be the new Annihiliation...Annihiliation of the MK franchise.

Actually Harry Shum and Dan Southworth have been on fan cast lists for a good minute for Kang and Kenshi respectively but I wouldn't try to dismiss them as "talentless" or anything either considering that much like Southworth, Mullins use to play in Kamen Rider(while Southworth was in PR:Time Force) so....yeah let's not be dismissive.

2. Jeri Ryan isn't all that as an actress and she definitely wasn't that great as Sonya. On top of that, Jolene Tran while a great fighter, can easily be replaced and I'd hardly call it loss.

3. Annihilation sucked because

- 1. the dialogue was so horrible that Meryl Streep would like bad in this.

- 2. We had a director of cinematography as a director who botched everything during production.

- 3. We had bad actors who all overracted.

THAT'S interesting.
He may not be a martial artist but he's a extraordinary dancer so his body control will undoubtedly help him if he has fight scenes.

Dance and Martial arts are TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
This is a false Myth borned because Bruce Lee was also a chachacha (whatever is written) teacher.

I personally tried both MA and dancing for several years, and I can guarantee you that they are different, very different.
You can learn to control your body in many ways...sports (football, soccer, basket, volley and tennis are good examples), etc but I don't know any other way to move you body for combat.

And I have nothing against Power Rangers or Kamen Rider, the only difference is that Matt Mullins had few roles in "serious" movies, like Blood & Bone, Bloodfight 2050, Johnny Tao, etc.

Dan Southworth only did Power Rangers and few amateur/indipendent low budget flicks. Not properly the first choice IMO.

And i Wonder who's gonna be the new Johnny Cage...Brad Pitt?
He has been listes in many fan casts, but he's too much of a famous star to play as him in a web-series.

Then what about Jay Chou and Rain both Asian Pop stars that can pick up Martial Arts choreography pretty well despite only having Dance choreo backgrounds? In All honesty it depends on the type of dance you're studying though.

Regarding Dan, Low budget films or not, he's still someone that looks like the character he's expected to be playing, has the martial arts abilities and swordwork necessary, and seems to have people that like the small roles he's done. It also helps that he still keeps himself busy working with choreo and voice for the Devil May Cry series.

Jay Chou is not a dancer and I'd call his movie performances far from being any good. And him and Rain both used stunt-doubles for their action sequences.
The silverscreen is PLENTY of people that can act and fight decently, no need to call a guy from GLEE that is not even a martial artist and maybe needs a stunt-double even for getting down-stairs..
