Shang Tsung VS Motaro -fake-

Things I need advice with:
- Is the green smoke too much?
- How do I make Motaro's bloody cuts look more realistic?
- How do I make my own weapon without using the generic scorpion one?
- Anything else?
appreciated.

Pretty interesting...
1. No, but it should have a different feel to it, more of a wispy shape than a green cloud to achieve soul status instead of flatulence.
2. Practice, use of lighting and shadows, streaming blood that is brighter than the wound and also think about how the cut happened, should it have smooth edges or be jagged and torn. Also, the blood should have shading to it as well, not be one solid color stream.
3. Which program? They're all pretty much the same, except layers make it easier in PS, PSP and stuff. This should work in any editing program, including Paint. Start with a base shape and the neutral colors of the weapon or object you want. Then add highlights and shadows. If you're using PS or something similar, start a new layer over the base, and use the previous layer as a clipping mask, this will help you avoid going outside of the borders (it shows up as an option when creating a new layer) when you do the lighting effects. Biggest thing is use reference material. That will help you get a good feel for the textures of the different elements, hilt, blade, spike, etc...
4. Yeah, you seem to have blending all the parts together to make it feel like one image, now get into the nitty-gritty and edit some sprites to modernize and personalize them. Maybe do a bit more with the background too. Don't forget life bars, timer and all that, it really makes it a fake screen opposed to a picture.
Shadows look pretty good, but I think Tsung's leans too far to the left. It doesn't look natural. It's also not attached to his left foot.
Are the masked guards supposed to be leaning on the railing behind them? The body posture says that, but it doesn't look like they are. Not to mention it's not very guard like to be leaning while on station. They should be standing at the ready, as if they were trained and in some sort of event, not being lazy on their own time. (Very small nit-pick).

What kind of weapon are you looking for Fed?
I got a shitload made on my site, Temple of Ka-Tra.
I like the guards. They look a bit more realistic in their relaxed poses, and I like the outfits.
The green mist is a bit Photoshop-esque compared to MK's standard effects, but it looks alright.
Can't help you with your wounds, I'm still learning, myself.

Yes it was seeing your weapons on the Temple of Ka-Tra that made me want to start making my own, because they look kick-ass. I was thinking one of those curved swords like what Quan Chi had in DA.

the best way to do weapons at least in my opinion is by using little chunks of metallic parts... like jax's arms, motaro's tail, etc. etc.
and I would say the smoke is a tad much.. since it kinda looses its form and looks too chaotic... it would look sick if it naturally came chaotically out of Motaro, but then towards the left it concentrated and started focusing on Shang's hand
the blood is a bit too saturated/light... if u make it a bit darker and maybe lower the saturation just a bit it'd look great.. the actual wound i really think looks perfect.
one comment: the masked guards look kinda awkward cause they are both in the same pose... and since its a relaxed pose it looks awkward that they'd both do it symmetrically... and their hand is not in perspective, while the ledge is.... i would recommend changing the ledge... cause i really like the guard's sprites... their outfits are flawless

Everyone has already said a lot already on it, so rather than be repetitive, I'm going to point out something that irks me about this fake that everyone seemed to forget...
Motaro's blood is supposed to be GREEN. If you can edit it to that his blood is the accurate colour, it will show a lot more against his brown skin/fur.
Anyway, aside form that, I like the fake.

I should also comment that I like the stage.
Very probable design for a temple on Shao Kahn's palace grounds.
The looming tower, and ominous red sky are very fitting companions. It gives an aura of mystical energies, and the darkness that dominates Outworld.

noooooo I'm totally shying away from that whole green blood thing. The only character I believe should have green blood is reptile. Do you think the demons on doom would have looked nearly as frightening if they were given oozing green alien blood? I personally think not.
I mean, I'm willing to give it a go just to see how it looks but I dont see it happening in this fake. Thanks though its a really good point nonetheless.

yeah thats the feel i was sorta going for. The props on MK have the potential to make really captivating stages if you know how to manipulate them

I love that background. The rest is boring. Gee, Tsung is taking Motaro's soul away. I always tell you to make your fakes with action and gore. When has Mortal Kombat become a starring contest?

My last one (baraka's gutspill) was really gorey, hence why i wanted to take a more tuned-down approach with this one. I try to create action dude, but it always seems to fail for some reason
