eh, I hated i mean HATED the story between mkda to mka, i hope they just ignore those 3 games, to much non-sense in my opinion, zombies, vampires, ben afflick, dragon king, evil raiden...give me a break... i hope they go back to a tournament style of mk. The elder gods can keep the two opposing realms in check with the tournament, introducing new enemies new heros nothing ridiculous, hopefully boon keeps mk...MK this time

I would love to see fighters return it wouldnt be mk without scorpion or sub-zero, johnny cage, lui kang, sonya, raiden etc but they need better artists to design their looks! like i said before i hated everything from mkda to mka...

i just hope they dont bring back khan, he was a villain that was ment to die off, shang and quan on the other hand need to stay because they're absolutes! u know the type of bad guys in every genre that get defeated runaway and come back to cuz more chaos...

Hey, now I'm not being sexist or anything but I personally don't play as any of the current female characters in the series, in regards to your shock at no women in the game, why not answer the post and tell me WHO you'd like to see in the game if you could only choose 12, I'm guessing there'll be some women in there?

1) Scorpion
Personally, I can't say I want him back...but I know he will be anyway.
Story: After getting his revenge on Quan Chi and with his family & clan dead for good, Scorpion finally realizes his old life if gone forever and he can never get it back. He returns hoping to regain his honor and find some kind of peace.

2) Sub-Zero
We know Sub-Zero's coming back, too...I don't mind.
Story: Not sure, but I think it's time he moves on to more main event level stories. So depending on who the overall threat is...which should be someone new, BTW...that's where Sub-Zero's story should go.

3) Kitana
Personal favorite, but I only really want her back if they do something worth while with her. Otherwise she should retire.
Story: After Armageddon, Kitana renounced her title as Princess and has since hidden herself in the ruins of Earth...which was decimated during Armageddon...trying to forget the past. However, with the new threat emerging, she soon finds herself forced to fight once again.

4) Mileena
One of the few older pre-MK4 characters I think should definitely come back....provided they drop her feud with Kitana.
Story: After Armageddon and Kitana's disappearance, Mileena usurps her "sister's" identity and takes the Edenian throne. However, her rule is tenuous as her face is still deformed and Tanya, who knows the truth, is blackmailing her.

5) Noob Saibot
I wouldn't mind Noob Saibot coming back, since his story has only just taken off.
Story: Have him solidify his rule in Netherealm. Not at all interested in a feud with Sub-Zero though. I'd rather his primary opponent either be Sareena or Scorpion...or both.

6) Sareena
Speaking of which, Sareena is a definite must. She's only just started and she has massive potential.
Story: Finally free from Quan Chi, Sareena hopes to find some way of ridding herself of her Demonic taint. Unfortunately, this quest will unknowingly make her a target.

7) Nitara
She was cool and I'd like to see her back.
Story: Learns of Sareena and fears she may try to find the Kriss, as Ashrah did. Intends to stop her before this happens.

8) Hotaru
I've grown to appreciate Hotaru more. He's can make a good antagonist for several characters.
Story: Offers his alliance to Raiden, believing this will finally restore order to the realms.

9) Ermac
I can see Ermac going somewhere. Maybe emerging into one of the major characters like Sub-Zero did.
Story: After Armageddon, Ermac vows to act as Outworld's defender...using his power to ensure the realm is never threatened or becomes a threat again.

10) Fujin
Since, one way or another, Raiden isn't going to be the Guardian of Earth anymore, I'd like to see them run with Fujin.
Story: With the new threat emerging and sensing the presence of Raiden, Fujin returns to fight personally.

11) Li Mei
Li Mei's improved a great deal since she first appeared. I'd like to see where she goes.
Story: Gave in to the taint of evil in her soul during Armageddon...causing the death of her teacher, Bo' Rai Cho. Regaining her sense, she was horrified by what she did and has since vowed to fight against evil so what happened to her will never happen to anyone else again.

12) Havik
Good character who can be fit into just about any story.
Story: Not sure. Depending on what the overall threat is, we'll see from there.

I especially liked the Mileena posing as Kitana bit. That'd be interesting.

I'm going to address your new character concepts for I post my list of returning characters, if you don't mind, man?

I like your idea of an updated cybernetic ninja. I'm not sure if I like his Lin Kuei alignment, though. That would make him good, right? I just think he should maybe come from the same origins as Sektor and Cyrax. Perhaps the o Lin Kuei still has its followers, who have created Grymix to get rid of Sub-Zero? Or someone else that stands in their way?

I think the name "Grymix" could also use a bit of work. It grows on you, but it doesn't sound too "roboty" at first.

The runner is interesting, but the story could use a little tweaking. I don't mind the idea of heightened speed and power, but a billionaire tycoon just doesn't sound too much like Mortal Kombat. Maybe have him enhanced by sorcery, or by the same faction that is backing Grymix? The runner thing also makes him a bit unaccessible. Maybe have him as some sort of martial artist who gets transformed?

The last character is well thought out, but his powers are very similar to Raiden or Rain's, aren't they? He just doesn't seem as original as a new character should be. I love the way you've explained how he has his powers, and I think it would have been a better direction to take the Rain character than they actually took the Rain character.

I hope you don't feel insulted by anything I've said, I'm just offering some constructive criticism. You might completely disagree, and that is fine. You may find others completely agree with you. The thing about writing and a creative process, though, is that there are always changes to be made, and it will always improve the end product for some, and detract from it for others. It's an amazing thing. :)

Thanks, man. I do occasionally put my creativity to work on creating new characters and stuff. I was working on my own concept for MK8, but made some changes, and am still yet to really finalise it.

I'll get onto some new characters a bit later. For now, some returning characters I'd like to see:

Sonya Blade
I'm not the biggest Sonya fan in the world, but she was the first female of Mortal Kombat. She's also a favourite of the MK Team, and is rumoured to be back. I'd have her on the good side of things, as a lead protagonist, but she's a bit more damaged now than she was. Liu Kang is gone, Johnny Cage is gone, Kung Lao is gone, and she believes Jax to be dead. Sonya has lost so much dedicating her life to protecting a realm, that it is beginning to wear her down.

I don't want to call her a "reluctant hero," because she is still very much invested in protecting the realms, but she's becoming a lot more cynical, beginning to doubt the purpose of it all, and is becoming a bit more ruthless and unforgiving than she used to be.

Kurtis Stryker
At one stage, Stryker was my favourite MK character. I really liked the idea of a guy who had no supernatural powers, being forced into a fight he really has not business winning. He levels the playing field a bit with his Earthrealm technology, but a guy like him is still the underdog. I'd go in an opposite direction with Stryker than Sonya. While Sonya is beginning to doubt herself more and more, Stryker is developing a bit of a god-complex, as he has survived Shao Kahn's invasion of Outworld, and Armageddon. Stryker believes himself to be the salvation of all humanity, and this confidence fuels him with a more intense fighting spirit.

Raiden
Defeated by a restored Liu Kang during Armageddon, Raiden is brought to justice and stripped of his Elder God status, and given mortality. He is forced to fight in the new Mortal Kombat tournament, to serve the realm he was once charged with protecting. Through this, Raiden begins to develop a new understanding and appreciation for mortals.

Kitana
The new Queen of Edenia with Sindel's passing. Kitana is doing wonders for her new realm, and she has decided upon a new King. Things look bright for Edenia, until Kitana decides to fight in Mortal Kombat for mysterious reasons, and puts her health and the throne of Edenia (and thus its stability) in jeopardy.

I like the idea of throwing a bit of mystery into Kitana's storyline. It turns out that Kitana is actually Mileena, and that somehow their faces were swapped during Armageddon by Shang Tsung, who has helped Mileena take control of Edenia from behind the scenes, so he can come in and usurp the realm. Mileena is like the annoying little girl that wanted the pony, but now that she has it, she is treating it right and does not want to lose it. She fights under the name "Kitana" as that is the identity she has assumed.

Taven
He's the new protector of Edenia, but he's not too sure about things. His brother Daegon has been imprisoned for all eternity by his parents for attempting to murder them, and Taven does not agree with his brother, but does not like their suffering. He is looking for a way to make his brother's suffering more tolerable, and to hopefully make him see the error of his ways, and to convince his parents to give him another chance to help Edenia out.

Darrius
Not a favourite of mine, but a favourite of the MK Team. I'd have Darrius help Earthrealm out during Armageddon, and discover that he is really quite fond of the realm. I mean, can you think of a place with less order? OK, maybe Chaosrealm. Darrius joins up with Sonya, and provides her with another supporting ally in protecting Earthrealm, but in this new tournament, Darrius discovers that there might be a way to return to Seido, and save it from order, even if it means leaving his new Earthrealm allies in the wind.

Cyrax
An instrumental part of Earthrealm's survival during Armageddon, Cyrax searches the realms for survivors, and once again bumps into Nitara, who is trapped somewhere. She reprograms Cyrax to serve her command, and get in contact with her brother. Cyrax is also programmed to enter the new Mortal Kombat tournament, and use the winnings as Nitara has ordered.

I think Cyrax's design alone would warrant his return. I can't think of a character that would highlight the technological advancements of gaming engine more than a cybernetic ninja, with all their nooks and details. He's also one of my favourite characters, and still feel he has a lot to add to the series.

Noob Saibot
I'd have Saibot escape the Netherealm out of necessity, as he is marked for eternal torture by Shinnok for trying to steal the realm for himself. Saibot finds himself pursued by Shinnok's top man, and once again his brother is after him, as well as a new foe, the being responsible for his creation, the ninja spectre, Scorpion.

I think Saibot still as a lot to add to the series. Well, MK8, anyway. He's becoming more and more popular, and more and more relevant to the story. Plus, he gives Scorpion a reason to return. I wouldn't make him a major antagonist, though. Just an evil taint on the realms that must be removed.

Sareena
I'd be really interested to see whether or not Sareena would join Noob Saibot. He is the original Sub-Zero that she encountered, and it would end her struggle with her demonic side to just give in to it. Or she can fight for what is right, and really earn her humanity. Not just be rejecting her demonic instincts, but by fighting against someone that she cared about that has given into their's.

Sub-Zero
He's pretty much confirmed to be returning. While part of him would like to retire and train more students, he feels the urge to put to rest the evil wraith that is his former brother. A complication I'd like to see for Sub-Zero in future games, is for him to lose the Dragon Medallion, and hence a lot of his power. With him making more and more powerful enemies, Sub-Zero without his Medallion might have to go on a bit of a defencive. But yeah, I'd use that for MK9.

Scorpion
I'm not big on the character, but he will likely be back. Scorpion brutally slaughters Quan Chi (like...really brutally) and then finds himself still unable to be at peace. He realises it is because he is responsible for creating Noob Saibot, but killing the older Sub-Zero brother of this generation, and exposing him again to the Netherealm. A lot of beings are after Noob Saibot, though, so Scorpion must get there first, or else he may be forced to wander the realms as a spectre forever.

I feel that instills some urgency into the Scorpion character, and a Noob Saibot vs. Scorpion fight would just be cool. If Scorpion does not kill Noob Saibot, however, then it gives Scorpion a constant reason to still be around. I'm sick of the character advancing to the Heavens, just to come back next game, or something. Have him get screwed over in a way that says "Hey, Scorpion, you're here forever," just so we don't need to keep have him chasing dead-ends and explaining it each game.

Shao Kahn
The former Emperor of Outworld, or the current one weakened and looking to make another claim at power. It doesn't really matter, I just think having Shao Kahn as a playable character would be pretty cool. He'd still be an evil being, but not longer than big evil threat. What better way to introduce a new villain than to have him reduce the previous big boss to "regular guy" status? Kahn no longer wields his War Hammer, but instead has a new, more martial arts focused style about him.

Shang Tsung
The sorcerer survives Armageddon due to his cunning and soul pledge to Shao Kahn. He has plans to break the pledge, though, as well as take Edenia for himself. I really like the character, and much like Sonya is the first female of Mortal Kombat, I think Tsung being the first villain deserves to return for at least one more installment, even if it's just as a secret character.

Havik
A secret character manipulating things from the outside. Havik reveals to a new character that the person sitting on the throne is not Kitana, just to create chaos for the realm of Edenia. Havik is a good character with lots of legs. I definitely would not be opposed to him returning.

Kano
As the boss of the game. Daegon has been experimenting with Kano, using the DNA of his dragon protector. Kano has the ability to go between human and dragon forms, and serves as the sub-boss this game. Save your new giant monster thing for the next game. Fighting Kano would require you fight him as you'd expect to, in human form, for two rounds. Then when you go to "Finish Him!" he transforms into a giant dragon, and you have to defeat him another two rounds. Then you get to finish human Kano. This human version of Kano could be somehow attainable as a playable character.

I'm just trying to think. That might be all of them. Ashrah and Kenshi I have ideas for, but that might be over-saturating the game a little. If Ashrah came back, I'd have her discard her duty of slaying vampires, and go and live life as a human, which is what she desired. She basically becomes a bit of a slut, which would be an interesting social statement to make with the character. She then decides to fight because she realises that she has a responsibility to her new realm. With Kenshi, I'd have him sense Shang Tsung is still alive, and enter the tournament as an ally of Sub-Zero, and a potential future trainer of the Lin Kuei clan.

Yeah do it like how they are doing with SF4. Only have the original 7 and then all new characters with some familiar bosses and or secret characters!!!

As long as Sonya is in the next game (and future MK games too), I'm cool with it, hahaha.

It's common sense that Sub-Zero and Scorpion are coming back. As for characters, As much as people hate him, I wanna see Liu Kang come back as a human again. I also want Kung Lao.. since Kung Lao is awesome plus he;s the second monk to show up. Raiden and Fujin can't be killed so they should come back . Johnny Cage, Jax, Sonya, Kenshi, Nightwolf, Ashrah, Li Mei, Sareena, Kitana, and Jade.

I would like to see mostly new characters, but If I had to pick 12, I would also kind of reinvent them. I think the next MK could and should take place in an alternate dimension / timeline, to serve the purpose of reinventing some of the characters, and ret conning the terrible story that was armageddon. Here is who I would pick, and how I would change them, while imagining they are set in a futuristic alternate earth ( Think Akira meets Blade Runner meets Gears of War / Unreal Tornement )

1. Scorpion - Now known as Hanzo Hasashi "The Scorpion". Give him and human look, pulled up ninja style ponytail, long black coat and pants sticking with the yellow and black theme, but in a more crotch rocket biker style. Give him a Ghost Rider like gimmick where he transforms to his fiery skull like appearance. On this earth, it was he who killed Sub-Zero turning Sub into the spirit of vegence " Noob Saibot ". Scorp is a bounty hunter type, keeping with his neutral theme.

2. Sub Zero II - This is actually the younger brother of the original Sub, but goes under the name "Cold Front". His appearence is flesh tone is more akin to a Mr. Freeze or Ice man, with neon blue blood pulsing through his vains, visible through his pale skin. Completely bald with glowing blue eyes. Big samurai meets snowboarder style pants with a no shirt on while he fights. Works for the Lin Kuei.

3. Noob Saibot - A much darker version than an previous Noob. His transformation from Sub to Noob was years of pure torture, transforming him into souless bringer of death. He is kind of a Grim Reaper style character. Give him his leather sleevless buckle attire, but with pale and rinkled skin, with a MK4 style hood overing his head and face, showing only darkness and glowing red eyes. Also throw in a sleeveless vest that hangs like a trench coat, and give him two hand held sythes as weapons. He is there for revenge.

4. Reptile - Though he is still reptile, he much more human than any version before. Give him a sort of modified MK4 style appearence but with more human features and palish green skin. He is also alot more muscular and menacing. Sort of like Fist of the North Star kind of build. He is muscle for hire.

5. Cyrax - Know as Cyrus Omax, he is a scientist, agent and member of the Lin Kuei. He specializes in weapons research and production. He outfits himself in high tech equipment, including forearm mounted launcher that shoots energy charged nets, and small micro bombs. Give him his human appearence, with pulled up dreadlocks in the standard black and yellow. Ninja style attire meets batman utility belt and other high tech accesories.

6. Sektor - Sektor is the owner of Tekunin Industries, a weapons and armor company. Sektor seeks revenge on Cyrus Omax, who infultrated his companies data base, and has stolen plans to build cybernetic warriors. Sektor has his own IRON MAN style suit of armor, but much larger and manga styled than his previous looks. His soldiers are also outfitted with similar suits, though Sektors are always more advanced and usually in the prototype stages.

7. Smoke - Smoke is a tortured soul trapped in a crewed robotic shell. After letting his parter sub-zero die at the hands of scorpion, sub zero's brother cold front ordered smoke to be punished, by volunteering him to be the first test subject in their cybernetics division. What resulted was a very crude robotic frame. His face is now television style screen with a fuzzy image of his once human face, projected on a spherical glass tube. He seeks revenge on the lin kuei. Think Robocop, less bulky, and a spherical tv screen for a face instead of the human face.
