Mortal Kombat Rebirth Film Pitch Debuts on Youtube!

For years the next Mortal Kombat movie has been in “development hell”, however this might no longer be the case. Earlier this afternoon, TRMK reported of a dark viral video posted on YouTube simply called “Mortal Kombat” under the user account of MortalKombatRebirth.

It’s yet to be officially confirmed by anyone whether this is some sort of teaser for an upcoming film or the next game. As well, WB Games has yet to make any kind of official statement. From TRMK:

We're hearing that this video is not anything seen before by those involved with creating Mortal Kombat 9 at WB Games. So if it is created by WB as a viral marketing clip, it was done with very few people involved or in the know. We're still waiting for an official comment at this time though.

It does appear to star Michael Jai White from the Spawn movie and more recently The Dark Knight. So it's either a very clever work of fakery or something more serious is being created.

TRMK is also reporting that this might be nothing more than just a rejected pitch for an R-Rated flick to Warner Brothers. Only time will tell, but if this in indeed a taste of what’s to come for the reboot of the film series, Mortal Kombat fans everywhere definitely have something to talk about for weeks to come. Let us know your thoughts in the forum.

Update 6/8: Actress Jeri Ryan, who played Sonya Blade in the Rebirth clip, confirmed via her Twitter account that this was a demo reel developed to sell the director's reboot vision of Mortal Kombat to WB. She says she has no knowledge of WB's reaction at this time. Thanks to forum member EnKompassedDra9on for bringing this to our attention.

Update 6/9: Crave Online has posted an exclusive interview with Matt Mullins, the actor who portrays Johnny Cage in the short film. From the article:

It has been really cool to see all of the buzz about the short. The truth is, the short is about showing a vision of what the next Mortal Kombat movie can be. I think it is a very well thought out concept that pays homage to the video game and its fans. The attention to detail and the little elements added will set this film apart from all the other films.

Thanks to Ed Boon's twitter post for the update!

Update 6/10: Collider has obtained an exclusive interview with the director of the short film, Kevin Tancharoen. Among several of the details revealed here, some include the plan to balance the series's mysticism and special powers with the real world and that the writer of Rebirth was Oren Uziel, a name revealed several months ago as the intended writer of the next Mortal Kombat movie. There is an audio transcript of the interview at the link above for further details.

Second update 6/10: On his Twitter, Ed Boon has finally stated his opinion of the video:

  • A million people asked me what I thought of the MK Rebirth video. Personally I thought it was awesome. Super high production quality!
  • But I was just as surprised to see it as everyone else. I had no idea it was being made until it showed up on the internets. All 3 internets
  • Its TOTALLY different & probably crosses the line. But as a "re-imagining" and as a film piece on its own, u can't deny its well put 2gether

With the release of the teaser trailer for the new game, it's unknown what will happen with the "Rebirth" concept. However, Ed's comments indicate that while he liked it, the chances of it making to theaters are very very slim. If more surfaces, we'll keep you up to date.

Update: 6/14: IGN conducted an interview with the actor who plays Jax, Michael Jai White. Among other things, we learn that the film pitch was made about a month ago and was unintentionally leaked out. Another tidbit from the interview:

IGN: The character of Jax in the game was a little different from the version in the short. Can you talk about the decisions to ground it more in reality and change your character to be a police captain?

MJW: Well, I mean I think it goes along with the game to some degree. Now we played with some ideas on how to show that I still have those kinds of bionic arms --- robotic arms, with when my arm laying on the table to show reverberations. That Jax still has the metal arms. Now whether this is post-special forces, Jax is now captain of this force. But he's still a badass fighter, he's still has got the arms. It just wasn't much time to show that in the short.

Thanks goes to Casselman for this update.

HOLY FREAKING CRAP THIS LOOKS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

IGN didn't seem to know whether this was from the new movie or if it might be some sort of viral campaign for the next game, but either way... WOW.

Anyone that wanted dark, realistic and gritty... I think you all got your wish!!

Alright, now I'm gonna go and watch this about 10 more times lol.

I can't wait until the pendulum swings back the other way and Dark Knight-style "suck all the fun and magic out of a property" realism isn't the cool thing to do anymore.

From Ed Glazer (darkmaze studios) facebook page.. he's not involved, but is in the biz

"Okay, here's the deal. That Mortal Kombat video is a proof of concept -- basically a movie pitch -- from the mind of Larnell Stovall. Stovall is a fight choreographer and was part of the stunt team for "Black Dynamite", which probably explains the Michael Jai White connection. Bam."

The Dark Knight was awesome. A movie like this would be pretty cool. A game like this would be garbage

You know it's a big story, when no one else is around to post about this, and Scott-Howell has to come out of retirement to get the news up.

That, or it's an unconfirmed seven minute clip that could be any number of unrelated materials reported by Kotaku (not TRMK). Probably just taking a reserved approach until it was something more substantial. It's not out of the question it turns out to be the same kind of fan vid/demo reel lots of other seven minute clips are.

Typically the site has not reported on rumors, at least for a long time. That's what I was told by Bishop at least, but it's your business. I would have reported this story when it broke if I was aware we were reporting on things like this.

Surely it is "something", but since we don't know just what yet I'm not so sure it qualifies as anything but a rumor.

According to IGN, "His [Michael Jai White] reps told us that White believed the shoot was a marketing component for the game."

Just throwin that out there in case someone missed it.

Lord knows the last time I didn't believe an MK report I was slathered in face egg, but surely, surely, Warner Brothers aren't going to buy a recognised property only to render it almost unrecognisable in their first outing with it. That just doesn't make any sense.

If this isn't a studio demo reel, or a piece of high concept advertising, you really have to wonder... (REALISTIC!!!)

@Crow I agree, and you're fine for not posting, you did right. Scott called me and we decided it's such a big mystery, it's hard to ignore.

@Mick-Lucifer I didn't think TRMK was first, but since I don't really have time to elaborate on the story, and Bishop is on vacation this week, that's why I'm pushing people over there for this, because Patrick is good friends of ours, and I know, for the time being he'll keep us updated.

The producer of this short has nothing to do with MK or WB as far as I know.. It's a producer lookin for funding and maybe looking to get under teh nose of WB.

Michael Jai White worked with him on a project before, hence his involvement.

I would LOVE to see this as the new movie, but have my doubts as to its authenticity

It's very well done, and i think it works quite well. Although i'm not really a fan of them dropping the mystical & mythological side of the story.

But it could no doubt work quite well as a movie, sort of like a reimagining, using the names and background story but told in a new way.

Will be interesting to see what becomes of this. If it is related to the game, then maybe it will be alot darker than previous instalments.

I'd like to think even the most shut-in and cross-eyed of MK fans are familiar with the plethora of superhero equivalents that people make. There've been a couple of half-decent Street Fighter ones recently.

It happens!

Yeah, I'm agreeing with you. If nothing else, it's definitely got people talking about Mortal Kombat -- positively, no less. Despite being almost absolutely nothing to do with the properties!

Who knew the only thing you had to do to get MK fans enthusiastic about change was to make it almost completely unrecogniseable? Pointy metal. It'll win them over every time! Realistic!

RE: Mortal Kombat Rebirth Video hits YouTube

....hurm.....

PERKS:
- Scorpion actually seems to have something resembling a brain and/or discipline again.

- Johnny Cage dead before it even starts and no Liu Kang in sight.

- Michael Jai White could, quite possibly, make Jax almost tolerable.

CONS:
- Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, notwithstanding, it's still fucking Jax and Sonya Blade.

- Once you get past the reasonably "clever" realistification (yeah, I made that word up) of the characters, you realize it's just the same fucking shit dressed up in glossygritty packaging.
But Baraka is a surgeon! It's different...though still the same...only COOL now! Right..?

- If this is the new direction for the games and not just a teaser/preview/thing for the next movie, I'm actually a little relieved I don't have to worry about them fucking up Kitana or Sareena anymore. In this new continuity, they'll be fucked up from the word GO.
Speaking of which...who wants to bet the grittified Kitana is actually a former prostitute who enters the tournament to get back at her drug lord father? OH...and Mileena is a rival hooker who didn't like Kitana was Kahn's favorite ho, and when she talked back to him, he scarred her face..?
Because prostitution and drugs are gritty.

- It's not Mortal Kombat trying to be realistic and go in a bold new direction. It's Mortal Kombat trying to ape The Dark Knight and Casino Royale because those were successful and everyone knows A = B = C...right..?
I know Mortal Kombat made it's name for itself by aping existing successful properties and cramming a lot of blood and goofball violence into it....but it is kind of discouraging to see them regress back to that. Then again, maybe that's what they meant by "returning to their roots."
Your mileage may vary.

If this is just for the next movie...then I don't care. The first two sucked...why shouldn't the third? If, however, this is for the next game...count me out. It's just too laughable....much like a crossover with DC was laughable.

BARAKA IS A FUCKING SURGEON!!! THAT MAKES IT REALISTIC, DAMN IT!!! AND GRITTY!!!!!!

RE: Mortal Kombat Rebirth Video hits YouTube

As stated in the other thread, if this was a movie, there would have been at least a label at the very beginning or the very end clarifying which company made the clip. Since I saw nothing at the beginning or the end, reasons for it to be apart of a movie has to be completely false.

So...

It worked for Dr. Dhalsim in the Street Fighter movie, right?

It seems entirely disingenuous to seriously compare this to The Dark Knight. The Dark Knight remained in service of the material it was based on, and it was much more artful about it's reasoning with the suspension of disbelief. I think a few too many people are confusing the direction of The Dark Knight with the direction of Saw. Not to mention confusing an unrecognisable seven minute video with a few familiar names and symbols in it, with Mortal Kombat.
