I thought it might be interesting, given all the news and rumors over the past few months about what parts of history might or might not be changed in the game's story mode, to bring this back up and discuss what it might suggest.

Months ago, even before MK9 was officially announced and we knew what the game would be about, a page from an MK9 voice actor casting call leaked onto the net. There was a thread or two about it at the time, but it hasn't really been brought up much since, so I thought it might be interesting to bring it back to people's attentions.

It contained the following text, which I will now paste word for word:

MORTAL KOMBAT 9 VIDEO GAME
Voice Over
Video Game for Midway...

SUBMISSIONS BY MONDAY, JUNE 1ST AT 12 NOON...
ALL ROLES ARE VOICE OVER ONLY

[ FEMALE 3 ]
Allegiance: villain Age: 1,000s of years Actor/Voice: African-American or Middle Eastern, 20s or 30s; commanding but still feminine (think Hallie Berry as Storm in the X-Men but with no accent) She is one of many warriors forced to serve the Emperor. Best friend to Female 4, daughter of the emperor, her loyalties are tested when Female 4's allegiance to begins to wane towards the Resistance.

[ MALE 5 ]
Race: Asian, becomes a Cyborg Country of origin: unknown Allegiance: neutral Voice: low, powerful, slight accent Age: 30s Male 5 is possibly the most ruthless of the secretive assassins. A technology enthusiast, he volunteered to be the first to undergo transformation to a cyborg. His enhanced skills and hard-hearted nature make him the perfect killing machine. He now searches for rogue clan members in order to bring them back to for cyber-conversion.

[ MALE 8 ]
Race: Native American (possibly Lakota Sioux) Allegiance: hero Age: 30s-40s Voice: Smooth, low, calm Male 8 is a great Native American shaman and thus is intimately connected to the spirit world. These powers, in combination wih his superior fighting skills, make him a most trusted ally, and one of the most formidable protectors of Earth.

[ MALE 9 ]
Race: African-American Allegiance: neutral, becomes a villain Age: 20s Male 9 is a member of the secretive ninja assassins' guild. As such, he's loyal to whoever pays him. Unlike his fellow members, however, there are certain lines he won't cross. His interest in the guild seems to be waning, especially after learning of their plans to convert some of their members into cyborgs.

[ MALE 10 ]
Race: sorcerer Allegiance: villain Voice: slight indeterminably Asian accent in two versions: ancient and 40s An evil sorcerer, Male 10 hosts the Mortal Kombat tournament and is the final opponent of any Earth warrior skilled enough to survive to the championship round. His command of sorcery allows him to morph into other warriors, taking on their strengths and abilities. To sustain his life, he consumes the souls of those he defeats. He begins the story as a withered old man, but later is rejuvenated.

[ MALE 11 ]
Race: Chinese Allegiance: Shaolin monks (hero) Actor: Asian male, 20s, slight undeterminably Asian accent Male 11 is a Shaolin monk. He fought for the right to represent Earthrealm in the Mortal Kombat tournament but lost to his friend and rival. Younger and less experienced than his counterpart, his skill is unquestioned. He just needs to learn how to keep his emotions and impulsiveness in check.

[ MALE 13 ]
Race: African-American Allegiance: U.S. Special Forces (hero) Age: 30s Male 13 is the commander of a secret Special Forces unit. While pursuing a black-market arms dealer, he and his subordinate are forced to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament. They try to complete their mission in the midst of otherworldly creatures wielding fearsome magical powers. He is built like a linebacker and is proficient in cutting-edge technology. Eventually his kombat skill is increased when his arms are replaced with super-powerful cybernetic prosthetics.

So...what does it all mean?

Well the characters being described are obviously, in order, Jade, Sektor, Nightwolf, Cyrax, Shang Tsung, Kung Lao, and Jax.

This could be a fake, but consider: this was discovered BEFORE E3 and yet it has most of the characters who ended up being revealed AT E3 on it. How could anyone have known the game would be a retelling of MK1 thru 3, and Sektor, Cyrax, and Nightwolf would all show up, at that time?

So let's assume for the sake of argument that it's real...

First important tidbit: it confirms Jade will be in the game. It also suggests Shang will use morphing, in cutscenes at the least. Maybe they're working on making it possible in gameplay too? Maybe just for the boss fight? I doubt it's possible, but thinking about it's exciting if nothing else.

Second, and more importantly, every single bio here is the same as in the original canon. Shang gets de-aged, Jax gets his bionic arms, and Kung Lao doesn't attend MK1.

Could these bios be intentionally wrong, so as not to give away any of MK9's changes? Sure...but what if they're not? The only reason to lie on it would be to fool us fans, but it's not like they leaked the sheet on purpose. The intention was to inform the voice actors auditioning for the roles what those roles would entail.

I'm not saying that confirms anything, I'm just stating likelihoods. You may now discuss amongst yourselves.
At the very least I would want Shang Tsung to use his morphing ability as an advanced move for his soul steal(if that was included) against the opponent for 10-15 seconds. But that's if they don't include his morphing for gameplay. Otherwise I'd prefer him to morph into anybody.

I think it's real, quite honestly. I actually just posted this video on the FEMALES Of MK or whatever it was called lol. But 1.) SO GLAD JADE'S GONNA BE THERE! 2.) I think if the MK team really didn't want this information out, it wouldn't have happened. I think it's just a little bit of how they work. One. gradual. painful. piece. at a time. But it builds hype which is good.

As a matter of fact, seeing it there was what inspired me to give it its own thread again. It seemed important enough to bring back to the fore.

It's safe to say this thing is legit. I didn't want to believe it at the time (and in fairness, I wasn't completely out of line for not buying into it), but in retrospect, everything seems to align perfectly. That said, I have to wonder why there aren't more characters listed if this was a genuine casting sheet.

I enjoyed the Sektor description, but it would have been nice to name his country of origin by now. Makes me believe we won't be seeing Sektor in his human state after all (though that was a long shot to begin with).

Find it strange that it states Cyrax's interest in the clan is waning due to the new technology, cause wasn't he one of the volunteers?

Nightwolf sounds like he's going to rip shit up in this game. Look forward to seeing his role explicated.

Seems like it's just one page of many. Also, I think they left most of the characters who were already in MK vs DCU off with the intention of just rehiring those same guys, as we already know they brought back the girl who did Sonya.

I can understand recasting Shang, he was played by a TV actor who might be too busy to return (though Heroes did get cancelled, so maybe not...), and didn't do a very popular job in the game anyway. I thought the guy who did Jax was pretty good though. Shame they're looking for a new one.

I think they're modifying his motivations a bit to foreshadow his later saying "Fuck the clan, I'm joining the Special Forces" once he realizes being a mindless machine sucks and gets his humanity back.

It wouldn't be huge difference all things considered, though it would feel like a missed opportunity. I'd rather him still volunteer but just do so with very different motivations, making him a bit more of a foil to Sektor.

Kinda liked Shang Tsung's performance in MKvsDC. Not as Asian-esque as I imagined he would sound like in MK1, but it worked. Gonna miss it.

This raises a good point. Are we going to end up with an alternate universe MK that changes everything up or are we going to end up with a retread of MK1-3 just played out with enhanced graphics? I kinda feel like the MK team is going to focus more on the Konquest mode this time. I think it could come down to the possibility of not having one set story line this time around. Maybe Konquest is based off of each individual character and as you play with them it progresses things differently but if you play through as Liu Kang it stays the same. For example, if I choose Scorpion to win all 3 tournaments then everything changes in his favor, just random things like that.

I dunno, MKvsDC Shang just sounded stiff to me, like, obvious that it was a person reading lines and putting on a fake voice rather than someone making the part believable. A pretty common sign of a voice acting novice.

Which is a shame, because I actually really like him as an actor in live action. Ando was one of my favorite characters on Heroes.

I'd forgotten all about this.

Considering the characters we've seen seemed to have been designed around what they'll eventually become rather than who they are at this point in the story it might be safe to assume that the casting call followed a similar line of thought.

I'm glad they're recasting Jax. I liked his voice during actual gameplay but he seemed to...nice I guess in cutscenes. I pictured him a little more authoritative than that I guess.

Strictly speaking, MK3 states that Sektor volunteered out of loyalty, but Cyrax is simply described as being "the second of three prototype cybernetic ninjas", with no word on his feelings on the matter. Any motivations they give him now thankfully aren't technically a retcon, but more of an expansion. I can dig it.

I was always under the impression though that he was the middle ground between Sektor and Smoke - didn't volunteer for it, but didn't resist when he was selected.

Yeah, it does look like they're putting more effort into the story mode. Doesn't look like they'll be changing too much, at least initially with these characters.

Thanks for posting this, I missed it when it first came out. The fact that the characters mentioned fit a reboot does seem to add to it's credibility.

some things I did notice here:
Sektor's looking for rogue members. Plural. Don't know if it's anything, but could hint at human Smoke?
Cyrax's background does seem slightly altered, I guess it could indeed be to build for his regaining of his humanity later on.
The description that seems to fit Kung Lao reminds me too much of MKSM's approach to his character. Also, if events do get changed up couldn't most of this fit Liu kang? Do we know who is younger between them?
As for Jax. His background story here seems more like Sonya's than his. Could he be introduced earlier? Might Sonya not be captured?

Overall there don't seem to be any wild changes, which is fine by me.
