New Action Photo Teaser from Live-Action Director!

Humorist Jack Handey once said of the pugilistic arts, "To me, boxing is like a ballet - except there's no music, no choreography, and the dancers hit each other." It probably isn't all that surprising, then, that Warner Brothers would tap Kevin Tancharoen to direct their live-action reinvention of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Until recently, Tancharoen was best known for his work in the dance world, having choreographed acts as significant as Madonna and Britney Spears. He co-created the MTV reality series, DanceLife, before directing the 2009 remake of musical classic, Fame. These might not sound like the credentials of an MK director, but if his well known proof of concept proved nothing else, he is ready to inject the series with the martial arts choreography it deserves.

Girl Fight!

This time around, @KTANCH has delivered a first look at the action of his upcoming Mortal Kombat live-actiong series.

Described simply via Twitter as "Girl fight!", the subject of the image might just be our first glimpse of fighting femme fatales, Kitana and Mileena. The pair have an association dating back to Mortal Kombat II, where the former Edenian Princess and her sinister pseudo-sibling were first introduced as assassins for series antagonist, Shao Kahn. The pair return in the new video game [render art], which reprises and alters their original plotlines.

If the high flying fighters pictured are indeed warriors of Edenia and Outworld, it's a reassuring follow-up to yesterday's Tarkatan image, also released by the director [full story]. Supernatural content in the adaptation has been a hot topic, but Warner Brothers and the series director remain tight lipped about how the story from the games plays into the show, expected to be released through digital channels in April.

The series stars Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, Ryan Robbins, Ian Anthony Daleand more [full story]. For more Mortal Kombat updates, follow MKO on Twitter, @MK_Online.

I see no fangs on Mileena. I am thoroughly disappointed.

They could be CGI.. or KTANCH may think a 7 minute episode, some things should be saved for the movie

Oh, it's definitely Kitana and Mileena. I adjusted the brightness & contrast of the pic and both girls are wearing almost the exact same outfit... That's not shocking.

What is, you ask? Well, Shao Kahn apparently sitting in a chair behind Kitana (the girl getting drop-kicked in the chest)!

So, anyone wanna take a guess (or twitter the director) on if and when we might get a trailer? I mean, come on, they gotta advertise this thing somehow before its released.

P.S. -- Two pics in less than 24 hours? Think we might start seeing an image dump now we are getting close to the release date?

It's always possible the guy in the background is Shang Tsung.
He's been known to do some sitting from time to time.

Probably get a couple here and there, I'd think.
We've had a couple of pics in a couple of days before.

I wouldn't mind if this was a bit of an origin story, like the Mortal Kombat Conquest episode.

I have a feeling each one of these web series episodes are going to focus on certain characters origins. ie.

episode 1- Raiden
episode 2- Jax/Sonya/Kano
episode 3- Kitana/Mileena/Shao Kahn
episode 4- Scorpion/Sub-Zero
ext.

Well, I already don't trust Tancharoen with the story, so this just makes me trust him less. He's already shown that he's willing to sacrifice the entire atmosphere of the video game to make something that's gritty, "realistic," and Saw-like. I'm betting Mileena will be fang-less because that's "sexier," or some $#!^ like that.

I expect anyone who makes an MK movie to abandon some of the canon – hell, abandon a LOT of the canon – but I don't believe that Tancharoen respects his source material.

This is still gonna be better than the utter shitstorm that was Mortal Kombat Annihilation.

The most OBVIOUS answer, about the whole "fangs issue" with Baraka and Mileena, is that they will be digitally enhanced to be longer after filiming completes. The only reason I can think that they would be small, is that its easier for the actors to do dialogue. Let the actors actually be able to say their lines, then add the long teeth in post production.

And as for (in Barak's picture) why the teeth looked ugly and "complete"? Most like, if for some reason the CGI dont work, then they can still use the shots.

Yeah, some people seem to forget about post production and stuff like that.

I adjusted the image and everything. The girl on the left is wearing blue and the girl on the right is wearing purple. Image is too low of resolution to spot fangs on "Mileena" Though when i do a high pass sharpen on the image Mileena's mouth is kinda blurred out or has something bigger in place as in a wider mouth. Though I may be very wrong on this.

Cool shot though! I am excited!

Mileena didn't have fangs in MKC and it was a great tale.

I like origins stories. Fangs or no, this looks great.

RE: New Action Photo Teaser from Live-Action Director!

Will this series be violent?

Ok, I understand the PG-13 rating for the movies and non-HBO-material Conquest TV show since back in the day MK was popular mostly with kids.

But the series has evolved since then and has been aimed at a more mature audience since Deadly Alliance.

So will Rebirth feature kombatants getting blood-spattered and sliced up?

I'm not saying they should show a live-action level of gore that we're getting for the new game, as I think that would make me sick to my stomach.

But come on, at least have the violence level of a typical slasher movie. I want some R-rated material for once. No more kiddie crap, plz.

So any word on this show's violence? Cuz I haven't heard anything.

I really hope they don't pussy out on us.

I think that last post reminds us that MK will never have a mature audience.

I've never really needed violence to enjoy MK, so.
