New MKast on the MK: Arcade Kollection and Development Tales from NRS!

Rigo Cortes, the MK Community Manager from NetherRealm Studio's has uploaded a new MKast (Series 2, Episode 7) featuring the up-coming Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection.

The video offers an extensive and fun commentary concerning the experiences and opinions of various NRS team members regarding the development of the first three Mortal Kombat games.

The video includes Ed Boon (Creative Director and Co-creator), Carlos Pesina (Raiden), Dan Forden (Sound Effects & Music), Mike Boon, John Vogel (MK Backgrounds), Brian Lebaron, Eddie Ferrier, Tony Goskie (MK Backgrounds), Troy Bowman, Paulo Garcia and Mike Taran.

In relation to the MKast video, Steve Beran, the Director of Art from NRS, has uploaded an interesting article on the PlayStation.Blog website.

In Mortal Kombat Memories: Development Tales from NetherRealm Studios he talks about his personal experiences concerning the games and has uploaded three mini-videos that feature Dan Forden, Ed Boon, and Carlos Pesina sharing further personal (and quite funny) experiences on the development of the first three games that were not featured in the MKast video. From the article:

"One of the best memories I had from the Mortal Kombat II days was when I was asked to be the floating monk in the Tower background. You can’t really tell it’s me in the shrouded robe, but at the time I dorked out hard telling everyone I knew that I was in the latest Mortal Kombat!"

"It was funny how low-budget the whole thing was [MK1]. It was actually just filmed in the hallway where we tested the games with a low-end video camera, a few lights, and a piece of black cloth as the backdrop. It was a very garage-band scenario but I recall just being blown away that I was witnessing the creation of something big, never really knowing how big Mortal Kombat would actually become."

"Making Mortal Kombat 3 was a really great time. We busted our asses. We worked crazy hours and stayed overnight quite a bit. Building the character costumes was probably the most fun. Now we build everything in 3D, but back then we had to rely on sporting goods stores, army surplus stores, Halloween shops, and a lot of duct tape. It was a blast getting the cyborg costumes together: it was a mix of BMX motocross gear, hockey protection, duct tape, and rubber tubing."

Finally, Mortal Kombat's Official Facebook Page updated with a picture featuring NetherRealm Studio's very own Goro Lair!:

"With Arcade Kollection coming out next week, we figured we would share Goro's Lair. The digital version is certainly a lot more portable."

Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection will be available for download in the PSN ($9.99) and Xbox Live (800 MS Points) next Tuesday August 30th in the United States. It will then be available globally August 31st and for PC ($9.99).

Thanks to forum members blacksaibot and totheark, for their heads up concerning the MKast! And thanks to samus_aran3900 for the heads up on "Goro's Lair"!

Hey, you guys do read those submissions!

Quite excited for this release seeing as I've never played these games and it's nice to see Ed and company still pumping out content to its fans.

Let's hope this thread gets some publicity seeing as its in a rarely viewed forum.

This video almost brought a tear to my eye... sniff.

That was a great MKast. I always love seeing the MK team, it's like family lol. These guys are really great, and I'm so thankful to what they've accomplished throughout the years.

I grew up playing these games in the arcades, spending hours upon hours learning new moves and playing with others. What that guy said about players covering the movement for a fatality with their hand is so true! I remember seeing that alot actually haha. Those days were the bomb man. I really wish I could go back, now you have xboxlive and psn punks on the comfort of their own couch at home spamming a move over and over again ruining the experience for the most part. Still a great experience fighting against good players online in king of the hill mode which kinda brings back that arcadey feeling.

I will be getting the kollection even though I have all the games already on mame and midway arcade collection on the old xbox. Just want to play it conviniently on my consoles. This is really great of WB to bring this to us old school fans. Thank you.

Of course we do!

The problem was that we had issues updating this particular video and then my computer decided to screw with me!!!

It almost gave me a headache. -_-

I really really loved reading the Mortal Kombat Memories: Development Tales from NetherRealm Studios!

SO. MUCH. AWESOME. NEW. TRIVIA!!!!

I didn't know about him playing the famous Shadow Priest and I loved seeing the videos of Pesina talking about his traumatized mother and the Dragon Logo design.

So epic!

This is definitely my favorite of the MKasts and the article with Steve's mini videos featuring Dan Forden, Ed, and Pesina are fantastic.

Though I'm happy to see this, we need MK Special Forces in HD.

There is no way the Mortal Kombat franchise will go anywhere if they don't re-release MK Special Forces in HD.

We need it.

Now.

Thanks to MINION for the sig! My name is Ian, if you really care to know.

Mike Boon, who is this guy? We have always seen his name in the game credits and attending those interviews from time to time, but why does he share Ed's name?

Ed (Edward) Boon
Mike (Microphone) Boon (Who are you?)
Sonya Boon (sister, character named after her)
Tanya Boon (sister, character named after her)

I believe Mike is Ed's younger brother. He's a programmer, and been on the team since MK4.
