RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

kintaro is the EASIEST character to beat in mk2. he will eat jump kicks all day long.

my scorpion strat:
start off with a jump kick (as always vs kintaro) but when you kick, jump in with a delayed kick. that means wait a few moments before pressing the kick attack. you'll wana wait until he throws his uppercut. as soon as his hands in the air, press the kick button. he'll eat it every time.

when he tries his tele stomp, you can simply jump straight up in the air with a high kick and knock him out of it. or, just backflip out of the way and spear him as soon as he lands, then uppercut. then go back into the jump kick pattern.

if he manages to block a kick, just start back flipping to safety as you dont wana start the pattern inside sweep distance bc he'll start throwing you or nail you with a fireball or uppercut. you wanna maintain at least sweep/outside sweep distance at all times.

if you manage to get him in the corner, do not follow up unless there is a guaranteed opening. backflip to free up some distance then go back into the pattern.

theres realy no reason why you cant get a flawless on kintaro.

with your fav char simply replace the spear with your special choice. some work good, some dont. guys like subzero can also own kintaro.

as for kahn, he is just as easy.

like kintaro, you can start off with a jump kick. but you might eat a shoulder charge. if he does his arrow toss and anything else however, you're gold.

if your jumpkick lands (you can always spear uppercut if your timing is right. but id stick with what works) immediately walk up and throw a standing high kick, if he blocks, stand there (do not move) and wait for him to take a step forward then do the standing HK again.

pay attention to your kick range. you see where the tip of your foot lands when you do the kick? thats where kahns head needs to be. he can be that far away from you and you can nail him every time. you can also switch out the standing HK with the round house.

watch for taunts bc thats a free hit or combo opportunity.

everyone posts up these complicated strats for beating the bosses and its really not needed. all you need is the basics. kahn and kintaro can be beat with 2 or 3 of the basic moves. which means you can beat them with any char.

Odd, as Kintaro has a tendency to grab me out of the air during jump kicks.

They seem to have had some impressive tech back then. The AI seem to have learned how to adapt each match.
Say if you win 1 round using all uppercuts, I bet you could use them the second round! They will reverse yo shit easily!

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

MK has always had schizophrenic A.I. The real issue with MKII is that it's one of those games where if you approach it as you would another human player you'll get stomped because the computer very literally cheats. It does things a human can't do. But at the same time, if you know the one exploit you can get the computer into a loop it just doesn't know how to deal with.

Unfortunately, that builds terrible habits so when players try using the single player tactics against a real person they get wrecked. Being "good" at the single player mode requires a completely different skill set than being good against real people. And that's a problem because it means that the single player isn't an accurate representation about what MK is all about. It's instead some bizarro world version of MK where down is up and up is blue.

The worst thing about it is that people introduced to MKII via single player can walk away from it with a bad taste for the game because it comes across as arbitrary and impenetrable. It's hard to figure out the "rules" when the computer doesn't respect the inherent limits the player must. It's off-putting. It's a problem with most fighting games' single player modes but MKII is especially bad.

Kintaro has to be the most difficult fighter out there.

He's a sucker for Kitana's fan lift.

He's afraid of non-stop punches though, he even tries to fly away!!!

I've found strategies using Jax, Baraka and KItana. I haven't mastered them yet, I'll get my ass kicked a few times, but the one person I FUCKING HATE IS SHANG TSUNG. WTF strategies are there to beat him? It literally will take me at least 20 tries to beat him, the stategies I use typically don't work on him. The only good thing about him is that at least he's not UMK3 Jade.

If it tastes like chicken, keep on lickin'. If it smells like trout, then get the f*** out!

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

Kintaro could be easily killed by close Jump Kick by every character in the game (personally tried on Normal difficulty). You just need to be on a certain distance away form him, so he will respond to the Jump Kick with Uppercut. But if your ditantion is right, then your character will fly over uppercut and kick him. Repeat until Kintaro will be in the corner. Than just go away form him to other end of the arena and repeat Jump Kick tactic until he will die.

With Shao Kahn it's harder. However, some of the characters, like male and female ninjas and Shang Tsung could use this tactic - close Jump Kick him, but press Kick, just right after the jump. So character will make Jump Kick right from the start. Most of the time Kahn will block this attack, but you can repeat it in quick succesion. So, if trained your fingers, you'll be able to JK him like this several times per minute non-stop. After each JK Shao Kahn will move slightly towards the end of the arena. As soon as he will be in the dead end, just repeat JK tactic until he will be finished or get to the opposite end of the arena and repeat JK tactic form there.

Angle JK works with every character against Mileena. Just duck and let her walk up to you and do a 'diaganol kick up + right + kick all at the same time. If she is too far away she will uppercut u. If she is too close she will do a straight up jump kick. If you time it right you will get her. The 90's were a bi*&%$.

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

I beat the game pretty easily, just use Kitana, block alot then use her fan wave move. You can use this strategy all the way to the top. This strategy is not perfect though, so it may take a few tries to beat some characters.

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

Oddly enough, I had more difficult with Kintaro and Kahn using a PC emulator for the Genesis then with the Arcade Collection. Probably the using a keyboard factor.

With Kahn, it took a couple tries (after not REALLY playing MK2 for years and years and years) but I pretty much got to use jump kicks, round house kicks, and the spear as Scorpion to knock'em out.

Kintaro... jump kicks. As Scorpion, you want to jump kick from a "distance" in which your inner foot hits him. It will ALWAYS connect, though sometimes he'll block it.

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

I was just playing mk2 on mk shaolin monks. It took me almost an hour to get to shang tsung. I lost to him i think 50 times before something happened that really pissed me off.

Fight begins: i imput jump, 1 button. Then the AI shang tsung transorms to kitana and does fan lift to anti air counter

Understand that i pressed one button and in the same time the AI imputs "BLK, BLK, BLK - B, B, B, HP". 1 IMPUT IS FRACTIONS OF A SECOND LIKE A FEW FRAMES. Humanly impossible. Needless to say i raged and turned off ps2.

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

MKII's AI was very predictable when it came to AI fighting you. If you watch every time you play the game the AI always seems to know what you are going to do before you do it and it does cheat. Someone when the AI uses various fighters it does moves that a normal player is not allowed to do or definitely cannot do. Here are some of the moves I've seen the AI do when fighting in single player mode that a normal player cannot do. I haven't seen every fighter do something but these are the ones I've seen. Tell me if you've seen these?

Sub-Zero = the AI will be able to throw an Ice Puddle into the very corner which you cannot

Kitana / Jade = She can throw multiple fans one after the other very fast. As soon as one hits you she is already throwing the second. The AI appears to do this a lot while you are in the corner.

Jax = the newest one I've seen is the AI's ability to throw a double Sonic Wave at you

Scorpion = occasionally he'll do his Teleport Punch twice in a row very fast without landing. I remember in UMK3 he did it four times in a row to me once

Even though the AI can predict your every move you can also turn the tables to your advantage against the AI because it too can be predictable. Once you've learned how the AI uses each fighter it is simple to beat it then. The only instance is when you are Liu Kang against either Kitana or Mileena or visa versa. In that instance don't use any specials, stay on the ground and sort of play it like MK1. With Kintaro it is easy to defeat him with very high jumpkicks. Jump and kick right when he growls and punches. With Kahn basic Low Kick or Kick Kicks to the gut the entire match. Of course some fighters have specials that the bosses get suckered for like Kitana's Fan Lift for example.

RE: Why the hell is MK2 so difficult?

As others have previously stated, the primary reason is to get you to keep dumping quarters.

The secondary reason is most certainly to get people off the machine as soon as possible, to keep the sure-to-be-endless lines moving quickly.

I can't imagine how much a single MKII cabinet brought in during a single day in 1993-1994.
