Discussing DC Injustice and Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe.

Injustice: NetherRealm Studios Develop DC Comics Fighting Game

Speculation regarding NetherRealm Studios's next big project has run rife in the lead to E3, helped along a little by a recently added question mark avatar, from old Tweeting hypehound, Ed Boon.

Rumors can now be confirmed with the official announcement of Injustice: Gods Among Us -- a new DC Universe fighting game developed by the makers of Mortal Kombat.

With their establishment under new owners, and a new name and studio setup; NetherRealm were quick to express their hopes to expand into properties other than the hugely successful Mortal Kombat, for which they are best known. As their first dedicated departure from MK, Injustice is still staying well within the developer's wheelhouse, not just a fighting game, but also dealing with characters they've had plenty of experience with.

Mortal Kombat Online was, of course, with you to break the exclusive announcement of Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe -- a game that began the relationship between the MK, WB and DC initials, back in 2008. More recently, NRS received accolade for contributing support to the development of Batman: Arkham City, whilst taking full rein over its iOS spin-off, Arkham City Lockdown -- a game that included a cameo by MK mainstay, Kano.

When the heroes (and villains) of the DC Universe clashed with Mortal Kombat, the obstacle of narrative and super-powers was resolved with a simple high concept -- a mystic rage. As Ed Boon told Gamespot [below], this time the world of the heroes will receive a more attentive approach in gameplay, as characters are divided into different classes and given specific treatments accordingly.

Gadget and powered distinctions recall a vague, thematic appropriation of conceptual class seen in the MMO, DC Universe Online. The over-the-top nature of the game already promises plenty of super-human feats, with glimpses of arena interactions and character-specific attacks: vehicles as weapons, bodies hurtled through buildings, and a quick trip to the outer atmosphere.

Borrowing parallel universe tropes familiar to comic books, it seems the Justice League heroes themselves may be part of the threat, not just a victim of it. The trailer poses the question, "What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?" Whether this cribs from a particular comic book reference, or deviates into its own, remains to be seen. NetherRealm have been given license to reinvent the characters visually, though, to reflect a unique state based on iconic and current looks.

Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Flash take another shot at the fight game, with Solomon Grundy and Harley Quinn also featured in gameplay snippets. Lex Luthor makes a brief cameo in CG custcene, taking a heat vision beating from his Kryptonian arch-nemesis, clad in his trademark powersuit familiar to MKvsDC and comics fans, alike.

I'm sure Ed is ecstatic to be working on something other than Mortal Kombat. I'm totally fine with them taking a break from it. Mortal Kombat is at it's pique now, let it breathe a while, then come back. In the mean, it's about fuckin' time DC gets its own dedicated fighter. I can't wait to play.

Please add Raven! She's my girl!

I really like the concept for the environments with interactive objects. I hope it turns out well and see how the next MK game will use it. E3 can't come soon enough because I want to see even more information about the game.

I have a feeling it's gonna stay as just "2013" for a while.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wound up being an April/May 2013 release. Kind of coincides with MK9's release last year and it too was announced just a week before E3 like Injustice.

Personally I just hope these characters make it into the game as playable: Doomsday, Bane, Mr. Freeze, Azriel, and Hush. I'll be entirely happy with the game if they do make it in, regardless of who else is in it.

[edit]:On a second look, I think Mr. Freeze is hinted at in the trailer. Just like Lex Luthor is hinted at in the CGI part of the trailer, The Flash is being cut by a stream of ice in the opening CGI shot. Only person that comes to mind is Mr. Freeze IMO.

The only character this game needs is Robin.

RE: Injustice: NetherRealm Studios Develop DC Comics Fighting Game

Anybody who knows me on the boards knows I'm a fan of MKvsDC (for what it is) and that I've been dying for a DC fighter made by NRS.

So far my feelings are mixed. I'm glad they making a DC fighter, but the style is too MK like. It just doesn't gel well with me. The DCU strikes me as colorful and comicbooky, even in Batman. I was thinking a cel-shaded style would be more effective. Instead we get gruff and armored heroes. Why does Flash need Armor?

So far the graphics are pretty subpar and faded. But, MK9 had this look on its debut trailer so I'm sure it will look a lot better by release. Ultimately I'm just dissapointed. I was hoping for a Jim Lee or Ivan Reis new 52 look, and instead, for better or worse, we get a netherrealm look.

What I am liking is the gameplay. I'm glad they're sticking with 2D. I'm also glad to see a lot of stage interaction. This is comic booky and it seperates itself from MK9 even further. The pro moves look like there back, and I'm guessing there is a run button or running in the game instead of dashes. Also Ed Boon said that each character will play and feel different. I like this, because it seems like it wants to be even further from MK9 by excluding universal moves.

I'm hyped for a NRS fighting game but I'm not too pumped on the look. So it is about a 7 on my hype-o-meter.

Also here is my thoughts on the roster so far

Confirmed
Superman
Batman
Wonderwoman
Flash
Lex Luthor
Harley Quinn
Grundy

Prediction

Blue Beetle
SuperGirl
Zatanna
Green Arrow
Huntress
John Stewart
Joker
Catwoman
Deathstroke

Zoom
Black Adam
Bane
Cheetah sub-boss- Doomsday Boss- Anti-Monitor

I definitely think it looks like it might be pretty fun and I like your character list. Can't forget Darkseid though. They have already used him, so it wouldn't be out of the question...

I'd like to propose a suggestion for the reinventing of the heroes' images:

I'm sooo sike about Batman... and i hope Joker is in as well. It would be INSANE not to add him.
Please no John Vogal or his team of writers for this game. He let me down BIG time in Mortal Kombat 9

It sounds like there's gonna be a bunch of different costumes :) I would imagine they'll have some classic looks as well as the NRS versions. I'm excited to see what new directions they have planned for levels and gameplay, Story mode, costumes, and characters are what I need to know, now!
Also, I hope they add Scarecrow, Catwoman, Bane, Dark Knight style Joker, Bizarro, Death, DarkSeid, and Aqua Man!

Haha so the DC characters are gonna have costumes with an MK twist huh? Let me guess a lot of armor for the guys and skimpy outfits for the girls.

I wouldn't really trust NRS in the costumes department, but I will admit Wonder Woman looks really beautiful in this picture. Way better than she looked in MK vs DC.
Photobucket
Now why can't NRS do this with their female characters? I always pictured Kitana in a costume similar to this.
