I figured it had more to do with referencing the Aztec God Quetzalcoatl

Yeah, co-sign on the name bit. If he is related to Shao Kahn in some way like Cassie is to her parents then the name won't bug me like it does now, but it's a minor thing I can get over even if there is no relation.

He looks pretty menacing. I love the red spiked paddle weapon he has in one of the screens.

Kotal is a play on the name of the Aztecan god "Quetzalcoatl," more specifically the "-coatl" part. Correctly pronounced as 'Coh-Ah-Tul', but the pronunciation 'Coat-Ul' is also common, depending on region/dialects.

No laziness involved. I actually think it's rather creative.

I think it sounds cool. What if it actually means something in some other language or mythos or whatever? Kahn means king and "Kotal" could mean something else. Did you really expect his name to be Hjhsshehshsmmntkene or whatever people were saying?

The guy is very obviously inspired by the Aztecs. Hector Sanchez referred to him as "Aztec God". You really think it's a coincidence that it phonetically sounds like another Aztec god?
