ComicVine Preview Mortal Kombat X Chapter 9

The press is gonna have a field day with this: Johnny Cage returns in an exclusive Mortal Kombat X preview posted by ComicVine.

It seems the action star turned world saver has earned himself the title of Raiden's Champion after surviving the events of Mortal Kombat (2011). Now he and Sonya Blade are in Outworld searching for their kidnapped daughter - and their target is Kotal Kahn!

Written by Shawn Kittelsen
Art by Igor Vitorino, Oclair Albert & Ruy Jose
Color by Veronica Gandini
Cover by Ivan Reis, Joe Prado & Rod Reis

Sonya's back--and she wants her daughter! Meanwhile, Kano recounts his last encounter with Sub-Zero.

Cassie Cage was apparently nabbed by Erron Black and the Black Dragon during the events of Chapter 5. Is it all just part of Kotal Kahn's civil war with Reiko & Mileena, or is the mysterious Black playing his own game? The answers when Chapter 9 goes on sale March 1st via DC Entertainment.

Mortal Kombat X: Blood Ties Part 3, Chapter 9: Synopsis

Cast:

Kotal Kahn: Emperor or Outworld. Osh-Tekk Warrior.

Goro: Prince of the Shokan Empire.

Reiko: Commander of Mileena's Forces.

Mavado: Leader of the Red Dragon in Outworld.

Reptile: Kotal Kahn's Minister of Spies.

Mileena: Deposed Empress of Outworld.

Rain: Mileena loyalist able to control water.

D'Vorah: First Minister to Kotal Kahn.

Erron Black: A mysterious mercenary living in Outworld.

Ferra & Torr: A little lady and a big bruiser.

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)

Picking right up from where the last chapter left off, Sonya threatens Kotal with a bullet between the eyes unless he reveals the whereabouts of Cassie. Reptile takes exception to Sonya's insults and false accusations, and flicks out his tongue in attack, only for it to be caught by the hooded man next to her - Johnny Cage (the rest of the hooded figures are revealed to be the previously seen other members of the Special Forces group) .

Cage defuses the situation offering medical supplies, but D'Vorah slaps a couple of grubs on Kotal, which eat the bullet and secrete coagulant oils (which Johnny finds a little gross). After thanking D'Vorah, Kotal states that he'll only speak with Cage, who he addresses as Raiden's champion, (drawing ire from Sonya at Cage's smug agreement). Cage shows Kotal the cellphone with Cassie's photo of Erron Black and Kotal understands the association; Erron Black is an intermediary between the Black Dragon and Kotal, and is the only person Kotal deals with. Kotal states that as a proud son who's recently suffered a loss, he would never hire Kano to steal children. D'Vorah points out that Kotal's troupe were all frustrated by their prior reception by Sonya in Earthrealm, and muses that Erron could have acted on that.

A short distance away, Mavado watches the conversation through binoculars and orders his men to stand down; they have a new objective. Back to the conversation where Kotal reveals that Erron is currently securing their northern trade route and assigns D'Vorah and Reptile to escort them; Sonya stipulates that Outworld's problems belong to Outworld.

We switch scenes to a forest where Black Dragon grunts (decked out in some awesome black armor depicting their insignia on their chests) are leading Cassie and Jacqui onward. Cassie fakes a fall and struggles to break free, but she takes a laser shot to the chest which knocks her and Jacqui against a tree. The blast comes from Kano, who advises them to never pick a battle they can't finish, and tells them the next escape attempt will cost someone a leg. Erron Black promptly advises Kano against this as the prisoners are worth more to them intact. He warns against eye beams, calling Kano's equipment a piece of junk liable to blast a hole through someone. This prompts Kano to refer to it as a new eye; we flash back to the fight for the Kamidogu:

Years ago, Sub-Zero knocks Kano back against a pillar and breaks free from his hold; Kano stabs him in the shoulder for his trouble. He tells Sub-Zero the dagger possesses whomever it cuts; the curse can be broken by killing the possessed. Sub-Zero states that he's "already been dead once - never again!" With this, he freezes the side of his head and rips most of Kano's prosthetic out. Sub-Zero grabs the Kamidogu dagger from the ground and escapes out the window as Kano tells him "this isn't over". (Note: It still isn't specified which Sub-Zero this is)

Back in the present, Kano muses that he never saw Sub-Zero again, but his thoughts are interrupted as the two Black Dragon grunts now carrying Cassie and Jacqui are cut down by Mavado and his Red Dragon. A standoff begins as Mavado announces his intention to take the hostages.

Meanwhile, Back in Earthrealm, Hanzo and Takeda make camp with their destination, the Sky Temple, visible in the distance. Takeda states that he's not tired and that they should have pushed on, but Hanzo warns him against the dangers of the storm. He notices that the clouds are approaching, and their campfire is struck by lighting; Raiden emerges from the blast, and, eyes crackling with red lightning, grabs Hanzo by the throat, admonishing; "You should not have come!"

Issue ends here.

Well, that's certainly......something.

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
So, Johnny is pretty much a solid lock for the game. Concerning the ring around Sonya's neck from that footage, it probably deals with something that'll be covered in Story Mode or the comic. I doubt Cage will be skipping this one as Raiden's currently low on 'Champions' at the moment.

Erron Black is a Black Dragon. Well, given the name, that's not exactly a shocker but I like it. I'm glad Kano isn't exactly in it by himself this time around and they have someone seemingly a hell of a lot cooler than Jarek or Kobra *shudders* to pair him with.

Kotal getting back to business as usual is something else I like. Just another reason why I really, really like this character and hope he sticks around for a good while after MKX. He gets shit done but still acts like he has a brain and knows how to use it the correct way instead of rage hammering his way through shit like Shao every chance he gets.

I'm thinking more and more Sub-Zero is Bi Han. I can't put my finger on the exact reason but I just feel like since it's an alternate timeline, NRS are pulling a Robert Kirkman and changing up who gets the scar like how TWD show takes events from the comics and just switches who it happens to for the show so that it still occurs for the fans but it's "different" enough to come across as something new.

Did Johnny have an updated design? Was Jacqui's less generic than what she wore during her sparing with Cassie?

I doubt the Sub-Zero is Bi-Han because why would Raiden send Scorpion to find Bi-Han? That seems like a recipe for disaster.

Johnny the champ and his look is just very uninspiring, I rather have someone new swoop in or an evil turned good. A 50 year old actor wearing sun glasses is the best figher on earth, come on... Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)

For those asking, Johnny's basically sporting the same type of combat fatigues Sonya is: blue undershirt, black combat vest, black pants, fingerless gloves, what seems to be a gun strapped to his thigh (it's barely visible), and a little chain around his neck.

It's honestly a nice change of pace and I like they're giving him more to do than just stand around, crack a joke and look pretty (And die).

I'm starting to think that Erron is the "Wildcard" of the group.
