Artist Justin Murray Shares Ermac MKX Concepts in MKO Exclusive!

In Mortal Kombat X, concept artists have helped to redesign and redefine klassic icons for a new generation. In this Mortal Kombat Online exclusive update: artist Justin Murray takes us deeper into the design process, revealing unused and unseen visions for the soul warrior: Ermac!

The concepts range from familiar variations on the final design, to intriguing reinventions that turn the new look into something slightly different.

A completely unmasked Ermac instantly stands out, showing a fused mouth, pale face and chilling gaze. When dressed all in black, he's almost a vision of death itself - helped along by a dark hooded coat. The hood and jacket motif have been a consistent fixture for Ermac's primary designs for Mortal Kombat X. They combine with past elements in one Murray design, which features details like the Deception era belt, and MK2011's black bandages.

Fans were memorably introduced to similar concepts this time last year, based on similar work shared by NetherRealm artist Bernard Beneteau.

I like the idea that the souls within Ermac have mutated his body so that he grows extra faces out of his body. Ermac becomes silent as he loses his original mouth, only to have multiple torso mouths talk for him.

You hate the idea?

I always felt that this is what some one who is comprised of countless souls would look like... There was never a body that the souls were put into... They were just fused together and formed a body... I don't know why anyone would expect it to look like a normal person.. Dark magic usually produces a dark outcome...

I think these fit Ermac perfectly.

My one complaint is that when the face looks too much like a rotten corpse it starts to resemble Havik too much.

The one where he looks most like a ninja is my favorite. That's the Ermac I know. Plus it gives him his own identity, but maintains the ninja aesthetic. I like that the torn flesh covering his mouth looks like a ninja mask, and you can see the green soul energy peeking out from behind it. Wizard Ermac is cool, but as an alternate, and this ninja concept should've been primary.

I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool if instead of bleeding, souls(red?) would be released from him?

I like the idea of Ermac becoming more of a mummy/magic corpse. Why would he resemble a ninja at all? There probably will always have some sort of retro skins because they are easy sand sell well. Our nostalgia fixes can settle with that while his look grows into an original identity.

I'd be surprised if Ermac isn't a full fledged ghost come MK11 at the rate his ninja origins wither with each new game.

Wow! The difference between this and that fanart that was on the internet a few months ago (with the Majestic Extravagant Ermac) is enormous

I'd actually forgotten about Ermac in Legacy, which is indeed pretty awful:

But in the NRS art, I see more "decrepit ghoul" than "homeless junkie".

I like to see primary and alternate costumes be vastly different from each other. In Ermac's case I think having him in a majestic looking, fully wrapped outfit for his primary, and then looking like a disheveled, disgusting monster in his alternate could be an interesting approach.

The last two in the first image and the middle two in the second image would be miles better than his current costume. The first image looks awesome with the unmasked look. No mouth formed with the appearance of the souls floating around his body is a great idea. I prefer the wrapped look from MK9 to the half wrapped look we got in MKX but wouldn't mind if they threw the wraps out the window if it was 100% out the window.

The second image ones I mentioned would need a tiny bit of tweaking of course (adding some red) but it would be much better. Pretty much everything I said about liking the unmasked look earlier. I really enjoy the scarecrow like look of that image in the back. I feel like it would look great with the MKX style whether it had been for Ermac or some new character. Not that I would be a huge fan of the idea of a new scarecrow character but the style definitely would have clicked for the costume.

I honestly love the direction he's gone in MKX. His tournament alt is pretty great, and really puts across the whole "weakening shell" vibe.

I would have loved to seen that concept in the bottom corner come to life. Very interesting take. Reminds me of this...

I absolutely despise the direction they have gone with Ermac. Every costume he has in MKX is pure garbage. The flying is a straight up Injustice rip off and looks terrible with Ermac. Just give us the red ninja already. And enough with the joke costumes, they suck. Who the fuck wanted the monster pack and mummy Ermac? 50's horror movie vampire Mileena? Brazilian soccer fan Cage? WTF are they smoking at NRS right now??

I like the last 2, the smaller pics.

Since Ermac is a composite being, breaking down in the absence or weakening of his creator makes sense. Exploring expressing alternate forms representing the various warriors or merges, like these pics.

The black cloak is reminiscent of Noob, and somewhat of a nod to their connection in Annahillation...

The mummy looks generic, it`s neat, but missing the Pharoah headdress.
