MK9 was nostalgia heaven (with some not so good bits) but MKX replay value has been great.. Even with the online problems I'm throughly enjoying it 3 months later.

IMO MK9 has the better roster and stages, but MKX just destroys MK9 in gameplay and replay value, so MKX.

I prefer MK Armageddon by a long shot.

9, and it's not even close.

My top 3 are 9, 3, II. X might be 4th or 5th behind deception.
I played 9, 3 and II for years with lots of fun. X is waining already.
Bad AI, black and white palette, ugly characters suffering from dwarfism, reliance on gimmickry...

I don't want to be too hard on it as it's fun and I'm enjoying it, but nowhere near 9.sad

Overall MK9 for me in terms of nostalgia, character design, bonus content.

Although MKX has awesome gameplay, better graphics and gotta love those pre fight intros.

I grew up playing the 3D games over the 2D ones so MK9's nostalgia didn't quite hit me as hard. That said it was still my favorite MK game at the time, however MKX has toped it in my opinion. It has the classic characters going in new directions and great, imo, new characters taking the helm. To me everything in MKX is a step up (except arenas). I would even argue the story is much much better. MK9 just crammed in the first the games, and changed things that didn't matter without getting rid of the biggest flaws. MKX was inconsistent in it's structure and flow. If MK9 changed more things I would have liked it over MKX probably.

MK9. Sorry that roster was everything. I can't compare the gameplay between the two, because MKX graphically and otherwise is capable of a lot of stuff MK9 was not.

The only thing I complain about with MK9 is that Rain was DLC.

MK9 had everything Mortal Kombat is about, plus a story mode on the side.

Idk, seems like MKX just tried too hard. I mean seriously, some of the lines characters use really are overkill.

I remember MK9 as so fluid and had so much fun with family and friends before MKX released but, I tried playing it again to see if the game held up and sadly...it hasnt. wow

The transition from MK9 to MKX imo has been so significant, it makes MK9 feel unplayable and just so slowwww sleep
Once you go MKX you truly never go back.(Unless it's for the tag team of course.)

MK9 by a long shot.

The roster: I'm glad to see Shinnok and Tanya back, as well as Tremor finally being playable! The rest? Classics that were waaaay too safe roster choices, or newbies that didn't really strike a chord with me (exception being Kotal). I found it funny that one of the living towers was an MK3 tower, but this game has none of the characters that debuted in that game (save for Ermac).

I can understand Sonya, Cage, Liu, and Kitana, given the story...but Jax and/or Kung Lao (and, thus, their descendants) could've easily sit this one out and have had their spots swapped with two other revenants who haven't had much time in the limelight.

I find myself looking at the select screen and only gravitating to about 4 characters. The rest are just spaces to skip over because I've either grown sick of seeing them so many damn times, or (in the case of a lot of the new characters) I find them boring. The variation system tries (sometimes by straight up stealing moves of other characters), but it doesn't make the characters themselves more interesting.

The variety: Too repetitive, despite the variation system. Everyone picks Tempest Lao, Master of Souls Ermac, Flame Fist Liu Kang, Impostor Shinnok, etc and it's all formulaic flow chart hoo-hah. ALL of them use the same cookie-cutter strategy. This has been around forever at higher-level play for all kinds of fighting games, but how much it has seeped into the casual play of MKX is disturbing. The only time I've generally been impressed is when I got my ass whooped by an extraordinary Ancestral Kung Jin. Huge props to that guy. Variety is fun.

The gameplay: Wakeups are a problem. Stricter timing (cool) and easier rushdown (okay), combined with poor netcode (bad), no invincibility frames whatsoever (also bad), and essentially requiring meter-burning to execute a successful wake up attack makes getting up from the floor a nightmare. Let us not even talk about corners. I get trying to make the game more rushdown-friendly, but all the measures combined to do so seem like overkill.

That all said, I do love the Brutalities. They definitely need to stick around, as they do add more to the game (instead of seeing the same 2 fatalities or win pose ad nauseum).

MKX replay is a bit better. The roster in 9 I like better but each has merit.

Without a doubt MKX, MK9 was great but MkX is on a whole other level and there is so much they can improve upon.

MK9 is better imo. Tag Team was awesome plus it had more stages and the better roster. I also like the gameplay better in 9. I played 9 for almost 2 yrs. and X is already getting lame for me.

Both are great but I think I have to go with MK9 this was just the ultimate Mortal Kombat game in my opinion I was a massive fan of the original trilogy growing up and well this game just brought it all back to my adult self. The roster, the story, the graphics, the hidden fights the game just had it all. But don't get me wrong I love MKX too and i am finding its replay ability incredible owing largely to the living towers and faction wars but it is just missing a lot that makes MK so unique like the roster is very lack lustre way to many good guys and relative characters and the secret fights have just been incredibly disappointing. Anyway here is my break down of both titles;

Story: MK9 (by a fair bit, MKX story didn't gel in a lot of aspects)
Roster: MK9 (by lots too many boring good guys and relatives in this game)
Towers: MKX (the living towers, survivor and endless add so much replay ability to the game)
Unlockables/Krypt: MKX (the Krypt and the unlockable skins were much better)
Secret/Hidden Fights: MK9 (klassic MK at its best)
Arenas: MK9 (much more variety there and stage fatalities are better then interactables)

Overall: MK9 but not by heaps

Though choice...

MK9 is a good game but all to familiair because I am from the oldschool period.
Its not a bad thing to reboot a serie but in my opinion it didn't work well.

MKX is a step towards a new era, good choice and I am loving the details in the game.
And everything is shaping up very good, all the extra's etc..

pffft...

MKX !!

MKX. I dont care about the roster anymore. Graphics, fatalities and gameplay are beautiful. The only thing that disappointed me was no stage fatalities and leas stages altogether. I love MK 9, but love MK X better

At first I had a hard time adjusting to MKX's style. It was clunky, awkward and it was turning me off from playing the game entirely. But I slowly adjusted to it, and now it's growing on me and I enjoy it immensely, and I am playing it more often.

With that said though, nothing will beat MK9 for me. Hands down best MK game ever.

Tough to say.

On one hand, MK9 introduced the story mode, towers, X-Rays and combo system that MKX doesn't overly iterate on. I also prefer the arenas of MK9 by a wide margin thanks to both the looks and the lack of stage interaction that I tend to dislike about MKX. Faction wars and the variation system largely fell flat for me.

But on the other hand, MKX has a ton of new characters that I really like, where MK9 was more or less a trilogy era nostalgia-fest. I also dig the krypt in MKX and the overall feeling like there's a lot more to do in general. Longevity is in MKX's side for sure. I also like that the story moved forward and introduced factions that played a role in the story, even if there were some consistency issues and a bit too much a balance issue in who was and wasn't focused on. Oh! And MKX's presentation was vastly superior to MK9's IMO.

Much like MKD vs MKDA, MKX kept MK9's core in place and added a lot of stuff around it. If I had to pick, I'd say MK9 just for the ambience, the fighting system and the overall newness of everything that seemed slightly less fresh in MKX. Close call though!

MKX by a long way. I am still playing MKX three months later everyday. If fact, I have had to delay getting The Witcher 3 and Batman:Arkham Knight because I am still playing MKX.

The gameplay is much better, more fluid and more complete. The variations add a lot of depth and there is always something to do. I liked MK9 for what it was but I can not go back to it. MKX sets the bar much higher.

MK9 for sure. Atleast it stayed true to MK. If nrs does nothing with this in the future mk games, its obvious they dont give a Fuk about their original fans. To me mkx is already a big Fuk u to the oldschool fans and j. Tobias.

Mk9, MK trilogy, Mk2.
