NetherRealm Studios Announce Enhanced MKX Online Beta

A major update is coming to Mortal Kombat X in 2016! By popular demand; NetherRealm Studios will invite fans to participate in a closed beta test for an announced enhanced overhaul of the online experience! Accepting submissions next week; the beta will introduce an all new model for online play with emphasis on reducing discernible lag.

NetherRealm will get away from their much derided dynamic input latency model to simulate something similar to the GGPO rollback method popular with die hard, online gamers. This simulate forward model aims to preserve the tactile sensation of offline play with consistent input response and a diminished impression of lag during play.

The GGPO rollback method has been popularly applied to online play for versions of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Divekick, and licensed for Skullgirls and Killer Instinct. Abbreviating "Good Game Peace Out", the middleware method was created by fighting game enthusiast Tony Cannon -- co-founder of the Evo World Championship.

Fans with at least 1 hour of online play will be eligible to sign-up for the Mortal Kombat X Beta. Those successful in their application to closed sessions will be able to offer feedback through questionnaires and social channels.

Test Your Might: Four characters will be playable in initial Beta sessions.

MKX Beta will initially feature Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Jacqui Briggs & Johnny Cage. More characters will be introduced at a later date, with more players invited to join testing.

The Beta sign-up website isn't scheduled to launch until Tuesday, January 19th. Make sure you don't miss it!

Mortal Kombat Online wants to know your thoughts, as well! Register to keep a journal of your experiences and thoughts in the dedicated Gameplay & Matchmaking forum! While there you can also co-ordinate beta and klassic sessions and discuss hardcore tactics!

Good fucking shit NRS. Really glad they're doing it in a beta form instead of throwing it out there all at once, really excited for this, and they actually listened for once.

So it's true, I'll definitely sign up. If selected I'm going to be forthright and as constructive as possible.

Great news. Rollback netcode and tested properly. I hope I can get in that beta. NRS hopefully can fine tune the rollback netcode. Takes a lot of work but eventually they will get there.

Signing up for sure. This was the most important aspect of the game for me. Better late than never, I guess. Also, the likelihood of KP3 just increased dramatically.

Hmm so the Beta only starts out with four characters that kind of sucks. I hope they do make up for it by changing the net code so people can enjoy it again.

I will rock you.

I guess Tremor counts? It did take pretty fuckin' long though. Leatherface got in because NRS listened to the sound of $.

Definitely great for the competitive crowd, and it will breathe new life into MKX (which could very possibly mean further new content down the line as it stays alive). For me personally I really couldn't care less. I play games to have fun, and I never find anything fun about competitive gaming. So while this has no relevance to me, I will say I am glad that this will undoubtedly lengthen MKX's lifespan beyond the 1 year mark.

Well, you all got your Tremor now. Can we finally move on?

So they're technically not using GGPO, they're developing their own rollback code.

.....Y'all let me know how that turns out. >_>

I know some of you have waited quite a long time for this, and I'll be praying for you.

This is really awesome news. Thanks to NRS for keeping their ears open and actually doing something about a major gripe in this game, when they could've just said "fuck it", and moved on to the next.

I may sign up for this.

They are doing that, because they want to kompete with SFV and KI3. A new MK won't be coming soon nor injustice. They are scared!

They're literally doing what both Killer Instinct and SFV did, both of those games also created a variation of GGPO.

Does it really matter why they're doing it? No matter the reasoning, it means a better game for us now, and in the future. Stop being a tool.
