Mortal Kombat Annihilation was released unfinished

In the book Lights, Camera, GAME OVER!: How Video Game Movies Get Made, Anderson and Kasanoff spoke about how Leonetti didn’t have a great time directing Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, and the production was very tough. In the book, Kasanoff revealed the film was released unfinished. “I’m telling you the effects in that movie are not the final effects.” Kasanoff admits. “I never anticipated that someone would take the movie and go, ‘it’s good enough’. We weren’t done. We never finished that movie. But the studio said, ‘we don’t care’. We sacrificed quality for business.”

On Kasanoff words:

"There were so many things that had been cut from the film and so many things that had been shot in a different way than they were written. Honestly, the final movie that's out there is not the final movie. There was supposed to be an entire second pass of visual effects, post-production, editing. But New Line said 'You know what? It's testing so well, it doesn't fucking matter. It still gonna be a hit. And by the way, it was."

I read that book too! The studio decided to release the film as it was, even though the special effects crew insisted they weren't done yet.

They wanted the timing to coincide (more or less) with Mortal Kombat 4, so that the game and the movie could promote each other. Kanasoff stated he would have preferred to have an additional 6 months worth of time to make a better movie.

Would it have helped? My gut tells me they would need to do quite a bit more than simply finish the special effects, but I'm not a professional filmmaker so it's possible 6 more months might have done the trick.
