An up-and-coming 2D digitized fighting game has been announced: Super Combat Fighter! As the name implies, it has drawn inspiration from some major fighting games, including Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. It has also drawn inspiration from other sources as well, including wrestling. The game is being developed by Critical Depth Games.

The digitization process involves filming the actors in front of a green screen and processing the images in Photoshop, similar to the process used in the classic Mortal Kombat titles. Some actors who have been announced to portray some of the fighters include Richard J. Cook (the game’s Creative Director), Ernie Reyes Jr. (who played Keno in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze), and the most recently announced actor, John Parrish (Jax from Mortal Kombat II and 3). Check out this behind-the-scenes pic:

Some of the musical talent providing the game’s soundtrack include Andrew Hulshult (Quake Champions, Dusk, Brutal Doom) and Sixixix (Tonight We Riot). The game’s co-developer, Headless Chicken Games, is a Sony and Microsoft partner, meaning that not only is a PC release planned, but ports to Playstation 4 and Xbox One are also possible, and even a Switch port has been announced as a possibility as well.

Some of the games features include:

  • 7 playable fighters at launch (more as DLC)
  • Interactive arenas, including one called “SlamMania”
  • Secret codes reminiscent of the Kombat Kode system that allow for modifiers such as “Falling Heads” and “Screen Shake Every Hit”
  • Alternate modes of play such as “Giant Mode”

Nods to the classic MK games abound, such as the character “Ninja Team” which involves gratuitous use of palette swapping, an homage to “Toasty”, and what appears to be a top-down ring-out or stage Fatality ala The Pit II. The level of blood and gore is also right around the level MK fans have come to expect in their games! Check out the screenshots below:
