I was watching the last developer interview Gamespot posted at http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/mortalkombatdeception/media.html
and i actually listened to what Ed Loon had to say, convinced that he really was trying to bring a quality fighting game to us this fall. Ol' looney was talking about how other fighting game sequels focus on improving the mechanics of fighting... lol, you can hear in his voice the disdain he has for this approach, as if it's fundamentally flawed.
He says, "Nobody in the industry is really expecting us to do something like this. The natural progression of a fighting game is usually focusing in on just the mechanics of fighting."
Then tries to clean it up, pretending like a SINGLE development dollar was really spent making the fighting better:
"Weve done that"
No you haven't. That's a bold-faced fucking lie. All you did was speed it up an almost unnoticeable amount.
"but weve also really tried to take massive steps in terms of just... uh... improving the entire experience of playing MK."
Can't even get it out without chokin on it.
Then goes on to talk about how adding all fluff and no substance works because it sells games. You know what, looney? GOOD FIGHTING MECHANICS sells games too. Ask all the people who've been playing Street Fighter and Guilty Gear and Tekken. Better yet, ask Capcom and Namco. The simple fact is that ol' looney is too stupid or too lazy or too ill-equipped to put together a fighting engine that does justice to the genre.
At least he admitted that conquest mode was basically just a cornball quest mode ripoff designed as a training system for people who dont know fighting games. Guess what? I don't need Ed fucking Boon to train me on how to play a fighting game, ok? I mean, for Christmas' sake, this sonofabith needs a fucking traffic light to tell him when to attack.
What trips me out is the bullshit he's tryin to run about how a lot of fighting games try to mimic each other and how he's somehow doing something different... then goes on to talk about conquest (seen plenty of times before in Tobal, VF, etc.) and the puzzle game (Super Puzzle Fighter series, anyone? Not to mention a couple knockoffs).
Bitch please. You're maximizing your profit with minimal effort. That's a business strategy. Fine. But don't try to tell me that you're doing it this way because that's what we fans want. We would have been happy with an evolved fighting engine and one or two more fatalities per character. You'd still sell a million copies, but you'd have our respect as well.
But no. Can't earn that. Gotta do what's easiest to make money.
Writing the code to a freakin puzzle game takes a lot less time and effort than revamping your core fighting engine, which they didn't do. Increasing the amount of bump-mapping for characters is a lot easier than making all the characters play differently and all the fighting styles distinct. Adding a contrived conquest mode is a lot easier than shoring up your animations and making the characters' animations at least approximate a fight between two people.
This series is taking that long, slow spiral down into the underground piping. Is that a flushing sound i hear?
What a joke.

1. If you don't like the game or the series, then quit wasting our fucking time.
2. The game hasn't come out yet so you can't bash shit. It's still 5-6 months away.
3. Kiss my ass.
4. **ck you.
5. You're gonna get bashed and flamed big time, I suspect. Good job on digging your own grave.

And you're point is?
I quite don't understand what you want.
We know MK isn't the prima donna of the 3d fighting games, but has it's own points to score.
We have an huge amount of threads "putting down" MK and i don't think we need more threads like this. It's your opinion, fine, but if you were constructive in the words you wrote than i might give credit on you.
I hope MK evolves in the direction of making a new fighting engine with more movmentes and different of each other, like throws, speed, evading, etc... But that is already said so it's no news.
IMO MK should evolve but not with a learning curve like VF or SC2 because you need Extra Time to learn some of the characters weakness and strenghts.
MK can make you play almost with ALL characters with simplicity (arguable).
But as i said MK needs a better core engine as posted in threads before (just read them).

You haven't even played it yet. Quit being a hater. If you like the other games you mentioned so much, then go play those. I've been playing deadly alliance all week, and sure, it has it's flaws, and it's not as deep as some fighting games, but I honestly enjoy it. I do hope that the MK team tightens up the fighting some in the new game, but I have strong faith that they will. I've already heard that Deception will include combo breakers and new throws, as well as sped up combat, which were all complaints that I had with the first game. I'm excited for Deception.

1. I don't care.
2. I bash what the fuck i want, when i want to. Just because you can't keep Ed Boon's penis out of your mouth long enough to tell him that his game is garbage doesn't mean anyone else gives a crap about what you think they can or cannot bash.
The game is done. It's 6 months away from release... all they're doing is ironing out bugs and shoring up netcode. That 20% crap you hear is due to the fact that 20% of the game was represented in the E3 demo, not that only 20% of it is done. You fucking moron.
3. Too late, i'm too busy with your grandma.
4. Bring it on, shitheels.

Ask all the people who've been playing Street Fighter and Guilty Gear and Tekken.
I hear those games also have their own forums in the internet, so here's an idea, why don't you just leave this forum, which is dedicated to such a terribly developed, garbage game according to you and instead of wasting your time whining and complaining about something you obviously dislike, go to Tekken Zaibatsu or something and put your time and your opinions to better use.
Deal?

Nah. How about this: you don't like my topic? Don't post in it. That's the action that the adult you're trying to simulate would take.

Hmph. A fairly reasonable response. Well here's the deal: with respect to the "threads before", there's only been 3, and i started one of them. I've read what some people have to say, but i don't want ol' looney perusing these forums and thinking MK fans are content to let the series stagnate with fluff and contrived nonsense.
My voice, much as you hate the sound of it, is important too.
And what i'm saying is this: "Accessibility" is going to kill this series just like it killed the classic MK series in the end. "Accessibility" sucks, and it's microcosmal of the dumbing down of our gaming culture in general in an attempt to wrend the last 5 dollars from some 20 year-old schmuck who should be playing with his coloring books instead of playing fighting games.

This thread has no point of being up.Pure waste of space and waste of time.

Is this the part where i start trembling with fear?
Well, i'll start tremblin' in a minute.
Meanwhile, i wonder what i said about ol' looney that's got you all riled up... was it the part about how his business strategy is ruining the game? Or was it that part about how he spun all the fluff and pocket lint extras as a novel concept?

well as I hate to say it some of his stuff does make sense :$ If everyone keeps going goodie goodie on the serie, no real improvements will be made.. so maybe if some complaints come they can make (another) drastic recovery.. but that's NO reason to go flaming the game (or other forum members)

mpetrie Wrote: Yo dude... fighting mechanics doesn't just sell games. If you have a good fighting engine and also add tons of goodies, people will buy it. How do you explain that Mortal Kombat has consistantly outsold Tekken or Virtua Fighter? |
Name recognition. It is widely accepted that MK:DA was garbage. But yet, as you said, it outsold Tekken and Virtua Fighter (in the United States and Western countries). Why is that?
The series had a good run (up until about MK3), and introduced some new ideas and a different kind of fighting. MK was sensational because of blood and fatalities and big uppercuts, which hadn't been done before. It was decent.
Fast forward to 2002, and MK:DA comes out. What made people run out and buy this one? People saw "Mortal Kombat" and bought it because they remembered that this was the game with blood in it. Pure and simple. It didn't sell because of the gameplay, that's for damned sure.

Ok, here's a suggestion. Wait till the game comes out, rent it or buy it (your choice), then spend some time trying to play it in depth as much as possible. Write a review for it at gamefaqs.com or any other well recognized game sites, so that the developers can improve upon their mistakes.
It's not necessary to hate on the developers and make fun of their names. Ed Boon and the MK team are not Kung Fu masters. They are game creaters. Perhaps they can use some assistance with the help of proffessional martial arts film coordinators like Cory Yuen.
I also feel that the fighting mechanics are not the best, but they are fun. I enjoy MKDA's fighting engine. But change is always beautiful.

Well all I'm going to say is, it doesn't matter what anyone sayes, I will get a game that I think I will enjoy playing. If some one has a problem with a game or doesn't like it, that is their opinion. Some people like fighting games that is strictly based on fighting, the fighting engine, and nothing else.(i.e. Dead or Alive). I'm not saying this is bad, it is very good. Infact, DOA3 was one of the best fighting games I have ever played, not only visually, but mechanically.
I can see where some fighting game fans would not like MK simply because it is not as technical as other fighting games. It has never been a technical fighting game, but a kind of "pick up and play' fighting game that is still entertaining.
Anyway, I will be getting MK:D and DOA:U, because I have been waiting for some 3D fighters to play online.
I will close by saying, I am not here to bash other people because they voice their opinion but to respect their opinion. Bashing is not my stile.
I hope to meet everyone online, weather you play MK:D or DOA:U.
Take care,
anubis177

Alright, the only non-negative thing that I can say about you Neuro is that you must be a fighting games purist. But on this board, you've been nothing but a troll. You get so many people on this board angry, and for what? Just for the sake of argument? Since you seem so eager to argue, I'll try to argue back. Not to tell you to go fuck yourself or anything like that, just to talk about the game and what you've said so far.
"Name recognition. It's widly accepted that MK:DA is garbage."
Accepted by who? Nearly every magazine and website gave it between an 8 and 9 out of 10. How's that garbage?
"At least he admitted that conquest mode was basically just a cornball quest mode ripoff."
Quest mode? Do you want to explain that? Like the one in Soul Caliber, SC2, and VF4? Actually, it's nothing like that. You're moving from place to place, interacting with NPCs. Your character ages. You give your character his moves. You can say that this is all fluff, but it doesn't change the fact that konquest mode in MK is NOT like other quest modes.
"...Then goes on to talk about conquest (seen plenty of times in Tobal, VF, etc)"
Now I KNOW you're a purist. Anyone that sites Tobal has to be. That game sold like crap, and the second game was never released here. You know why? Presentation. I'll take blood and gore and whatever you said over a guy in a damn chicken costume any day.
"We would've been happy with an evolved fighting engine."
But then goes on to say:
"MK was sensational because of blood and fatalities and big uppercuts, which hadn't been done before. It was decent."
So you say "we" in the first quote, implying that YOU are one of the FANS that would've been happy with an evolved fighting system. Then in the second quote, you say that the origins of the MK series were just "decent." ARE YOU A FAN OR AREN'T YOU!? Because if you're just a troll, whining about a game you don't like to piss off real fans, then fine, but don't sit here and act like you want this series to be better if you never liked it to begin with.
"Adding a contrived conquest mode is a lot easier than shoring up your animations"
Now this is just a dumb comment. Do you have any IDEA how many completely new animations are in the konquest mode?? I'll give you a clue: It's a LOT more than the amount of animation you're talking about shoring up. C'mon man, use your head.
Here's the thing. You can either accept MK for what it is now, or choose to dislike what the series has become within its own "microcosm." But it doesn't seem like you ever liked MK. If that's the case, then why post here? And don't give me some bullshit response like "because I can you tampon!" Really. Do you like this series? Have you ever? Because if you have, then you'd realize that MK is not, has never been, or ever will be Tobal or VF or Tekken or Soul Calibur or any other fighting game for that matter.
It has the blood, the guts, the graphics, the storyline, the fatalities, the minigames, the characters, etc etc etc. People should take the whole game for what it is, bitch about what they don't like, and argue you with people who don't share their view. If you don't like a character, fine. No problem. You think conquest mode is a dumb idea? Okay. But you're bashing this entire series, which makes no sense. Honestly man, grow up.
How this thread hasn't been closed yet is beyond me.

Neurotransmitter, you can't just do "whatever you like" here, because this is an internet forum, and it's guarded by moderators against flame wars. So don't act like you're the free cowboy here, you're just making a fool of yourself. Your posting was intentionally provocative and not thoughtful at all, because:
1. I've heard what you say 10 times before and in better wordings, with more nuances.
2. The flaming didn't really help in trying to build your case together, no matter how many airheaded fanboys pollute these forums with their own idiotic comments.
MKDA was not complete garbage (it was lightyears better than MK4). Sure, like someone else here said, it was not the prima donna of the fighting games, but don't act like it was Rise of the Robots. You don't have to act smug and superior because you feel you belong to an underground minority of fighting game experts. Bashing MK seems to have become their way to claim superiority over regular gamers and the gaming press. And that's sad.
Cheers,
VQ
