I think that the first 30 hits varys because the announcer does say "Toasty"

I am pretty sure it would end on 999.
But so close before it got it i got hit by an enemy.

BTW, sometimes the announcer does say Toasty if you're doing a pop-up combo that juggles your opponent in the air, and that could interrupt whatever he would have otherwise said. But that list is accurate - it's just that sometimes a Toasty might come up instead if you're doing a juggle combo.

I like how after you hit the 1,000 mark, the numbers don't even always stay all on screen. I guess you can tell the MKSM team didn't anticipate the combos lasting this long ;)
