Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

Before I get started, I just want to say a few things:

1. This isn't supposed to be a fan-fiction dumping ground but I guess people posting general ideas for where they thought the series would or should have gone would be fine.

2. I loved MK2011 and I really like what MKX is doing so this isn't another crying thread.

Everyone's got their opinions on reboots, some people hold original source material dear to them an abhor reboots, some people vastly prefer reboots, other people simultaneously enjoy both, knowing they both offer similar things that appeal to them but enough differences to make it worth experiencing both.

MK2011 saw a huge new wave of success for the series and thanks to MK vs DC it was now possible to make that game and really put a lot of hard work and effort into it, and now MK is huge again with MKX right around the corner. MK2011 was a phenomenal game to me and I enjoyed it's story mode greatly despite being a huge fan of where the series was headed after DA/D. As rushed as Armageddon was, I was still a little curious as to where it would go.

What I want to know is there anyone who didn't like MK2011's reboot of the story? Would anyone have preferred a continuation of the series from Armageddon? And if so, what way? A totally new game featuring several returning characters, some new ones, and a new over arching plot?

Or would you have liked MK2011's story to be a continuation of MKArmageddon, but still featuring the same characters and locations as MK2011 as sort of a love letter to the Trilogy era with the enhanced gameplay of MK2011 but the next installment would take chances again?

Continuing the DC parallels, could MK2011 onward be a separate universe from the original? MK2011's intro seemingly retcons Armageddon's ending, Taven is nowhere to be seen and Shao Kahn is the one who defeats Blaze instead. Was this supposed to flat out be a retcon, or is MK2011 an Earth-2 of sorts with similar history but not exactly the same so they could do a kind of shout-out to the last era of MK before wiping the slate clean with no baggage?

Or am I just overthinking all of this like a pathetic nerd? Chances are, undoubtedly.

Either way I've always been a fan of the series and enjoyed what it's done and I'd like to see where it's going. I figured this might be an interesting thread that wouldn't clog up the MKX board with flat out bitching about where the series is going, and propose/alternate entertaining ideas.

I personally think that the MK2011 takes place in an alternate timeline/universe, i don't think its just the past of the original one.

I just think it would be cool in one of the newer games if Raiden or someone could see alternate timelines, and one of them showed Taven beating Blaze, or maybe even the MK movies. Just for the heck of it.

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

I don't think you're overthinking it, it's a good topic.

I personally liked the MK 2011 reboot and it was a good opportunity to kind of fully show what actually happened in MK1-MK3 because some people can be confused about the timeline. Before MK9 I always did like the story and I knew what happened, but MK9 made me like the lore even more and it helped solidify the events that took place during MK1-3. Obviously it seems to be an alternate timeline because some things changed, but I think this is a good representation of what they were trying to make during the original games but didn't have the resources or technology to do so, with a few twists along the way.

They're trying to do a different take on the entire story and I think the alternate timelines will intersect at some point during MKX. I don't know if they will be able to crossover, but I believe we will receive an explanation eventually about the entire timeline. Hopefully the comics will be able to do that.

Ed did say that it will be hard to continue the story after MKX, so maybe something drastic happens at the end. Maybe it will be something none of us expected, who knows.

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

I agree, especially about portraying what they wanted to show in MK1-3 but couldn't.

Maye MKX's ending is so drastic they'll need separate timelines to merge into one to start from a semi-fresh state?

If they ever tried a Crisis thing like that I wonder what would get kept or merged over. It would be weird seeing Noob-Smoke in the Netherrealm with Smoke as a human-esque demon instead of a cyborg. Or some mixture of Taven beating Blaze and maybe Kahn after. Scorpion's clan comes back in both timelines, but in different ways. It would be cool if MK11 was another compilation type game like MK9 with elements from all over the series and a story that's well written but leaves a lot of mystery as to what events from what timelines carried over before it began. Sorta like DC's New52. I could see them aging Johnny, Sonya, Jax, Lao, etc down a bit again.

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

I agree. I really don't know what they have planned, I imagine with MKX so close to release they are planning a sequel already but I just don't know what they're going to do after this. I know they'll figure something out, they always do but i'm pretty excited. Maybe they'll continue to let the comic series do its thing and if it continues to get good reception they'll hire Shawn Kittelsen to co-write the story for MK11. Personally I think the comics have some of the best writing since the original games, and I would love to have that type of story in game.

We're even forgetting the possibility of another adventure game. Boon has spoken a few times about wanting to do another for quite some time now. They might be able to succeed this time lol.

One of the last hopes I have (and this probably will never happen) is that they hire John Tobias to write the story. Maybe he has some ideas up his sleeve after all this time that would completely change the story for the better. I think it would be fucking awesome if Saibot came back to Noob so to speak haha.

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

Tobias coming back would be cool because I feel like he'd definitely bring up some new ideas that felt like the classic games.

I feel like for now they'll continue the story for a few games and either just end the series outright or do another reboot.

Either a soft reboot where they do a new story continuing from MK11/12/13 whatever that just happens to feature the characters and locales from the Trilogy era and bit of the later stuff, or another hard MK1-3 reboot onward with some differences.

They may eventually start doing games that have big, complex stories, but aren't extremely continuity heavy so you don't need to know the previous games too well, but still functions as sequels to them.

I might be wrong but honestly i'm one of the few who don't believe that they will reboot again. I mean, it's possible but I don't think they are going to dig themselves into a hole a second time around. I hope they don't go the route of rebooting the series over and over and over. Maybe they'll just continue the story onward, but possibly release some prequel games or something. I agree that they may start doing games with bigger stories, maybe this will be the first one.

But i'm also cautious about MKX because it seems like it's going to be MK9 2.0 but with a new story that could be easily expanded but is limited due to the chapter system. It looks amazing don't get me wrong but fundamentally they're sort of the same. Once again I feel like the comics could definitely pave the way for a better story and i'm glad they realize this. I'm pretty optimistic about the future of MK though, we'll just have to wait and see. that's just my take on it though and I definitely agree with some of your points.

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

Yeah I don't think they'd do a flat out, by the numbers, start from square one reboot anytime soon, I imagine that'll have to be years down the road if they're still going, hence why I mentioned the soft reboot idea which isn't exactly re-doing evetything. I do hope the comic paves the way for a better story. I hope after MKX they do some stories about characters who didn't show up in the game or have a hugely prominent role. I'm sure guys like Noob, Smoke, Jade, Havik, Rain, Baraka, Tsung, etc will show up in MK11 or 12 anyway but still.

I'm not into reboots. I never liked the idea of MK9. That said I really liked the MK9 story. And of course the game play which is why it's sold well. MKX is amazing. Story was OK two be a use they didn't just repeat MK4 though it has the extra same villian lol.

What I would have done with the reboot is not change things like they did with Mile Ena and Cyber Sub Zero. What I did like of the reboot is that they added more opponents into the tournament, cause it never made sense with 7 fighters most from Earth realm and, only goro and, shang. Sure they was hinted others but I like that Baraka Kitna and jade, showed, up. I do, not want more reboots I, want the story to continue. And expand and maybe actually host another official MK tournament

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

Old topic, but why not contribute? Maybe it will be revisited when the next game comes out?

I personally didn't like the idea of the reboot. Deception's roster, to me, is where things got very random and convoluted, and the story loss potency. But it was salvageable through Armageddon. A pure story anyway. With that being said, I understand, commercially, the benefit of returning to a "pure" Mortal Kombat every few years, or at least when the technology is there to give it a fresh coat of paint and make your favorites feel "new" again.

So it's a mixed bag. I'm not shitting on the games. As a story purist, some of their decisions frustrate me, but its their IP and they have certain stock built up in the likes of those characters from MK1 and 2, with the occasional character from the later games popping in to bounce it out and ruin continuity, haha.

RE: Thoughts on the reboot? Would you have done the same thing or something else?

I miss the old time line but I appreciate MK 9 for resetting things as both a sequel to Armageddon and a reboot. I liked that it explained the reboot rather than just starting over with no connection to the original time line. I do think that Raiden created a new future rather than simply replace the old one so if NetherRealm felt inclined they could go back to the original time line if they wished. But I honestly don’t see that happening lol, especially with only getting a new MK every four years or so now.

I’m torn if I want to see the next game kinda alter the old time line (in the way that MK 9 covered MK 1-3 and MK X somewhat covered MK 4). I loved the story lines of Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon and it seems like MK 11 might do a twist on the PS2-era of games. Some of the MK X endings hint about Onaga, Blaze, Shujinko and so forth. I would like to see Onaga back and what they can do with Deception in particular.

But I would also like to see the series take the story somewhere new instead of just remixing and reimagining old story ideals as well. That’s one of the aspects that made DA, Deception, and Armageddon so awesome to me.

All that said it’s worth mentioning that I find Human Smoke so boring. Cyborg Smoke is what I like (Sektor, Cyrax, and Smoke are my far my favorite MK 3 characters). I never got why so many people always liked human Smoke. He was just a Scorpion clone. His story arc where he gets automated was awesome. I hate that they swapped Smoke and Sub-Zero’s roles in MK 9 and had Cyber Sub-Zero, just to completely ignore that in MK X. That means I’m now not only out Cyber Smoke but now Cyber Sub-Zero as well. Again as someone who absolutely loves the cyborg ninjas that hurts. I wish Smoke would have been automated and brought back as a cyborg while Sub-Zero was left alone entirely.

Must kill Sub-Zero. Whee~

Because - wait for it - ninja.

Cyber Smoke's MK3 storyline was one of the best in the game at that point.

HAHA!

That response got a good laugh out of me. But yeah you’re right. “Ninja” is the correct answer. I don’t have a lot of room to talk though because I thought the cyborgs in MK 3 was the greatest crap ever. Always been a Cyrax/Sektor/Cyber Smoke fanboy. But even I hated Cyber Sub-Zero in MK 9 (although I loved the twist from a story perspective but I prefer my Sub-Zeros to be human and my Smokes to be cyborgs).

Smoke will always be Cyber Smoke to me. Smoke’s MK 3 story - and how it ties in with Sub-Zero’s story - is awesome.

Must kill Sub-Zero. Whee~
