What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

So, take Sektor,Cyrax, and Smoke for instance, and ask yourself:

1. Do they essentially become the Terminator...or Agent Smith from the Matrix?

2. Should they eventually mask the metal exterior and get skin?

3. If they appeared to have skin, what about weapons? "T2"?

4. If no skin, then what? Transformers? Some freaky looking mix between man and robot like an advancement of Cyrax with the mask off? Or some weird thing like off Star Trek?(ew)

Assuming we end up having robots in the future of MK.....what the hell would you do with them?

====
People still have a skepticism about building smart technology, and relying on A.I. So if we were to mature that skepticism...that fear in our current day and age, to the point of robots becoming too smart and all that, what are some options with that "fear" people have for our own creation...?

Words off the top of my head that we have in real media today are:

1. "Drone"
2. The idea of "Cloning" one another.

I might just be asking "How much do people fear A.I. now days"...but-still, what's up with this?

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

I bet it's safe to assume the role of the robot characters will return for future MK games. I like how Smoke has this whole evolved robotic nanotechnology stuff going on and changing his overall performance and appearance. This can be compared to that of T2 from Terminator. I expect robots, if they are to return, to look more natural and human like, made of human parts, or natural components.

Take a look at Cyrax' alt. in Armageddon and DA, you can see his arms and face pasted onto a robotic skeleton ala Robocop. That was cool. Another thing I'd probably like is if one of the robots would look like the i-robots.

There was always something cool about the robot characters, I hope there will be at least 1 for MK8, I don't care if it'll be a new or old character.

i would like to see a version of reptile (lizard form) as a robot or cyborg. or one of the dragon mutants as one...other than that i think that if they keep older robot characters they will still be cool wether they are more advanced or not.

i see your point and i actually like the direction your taking the thread. although i cannot comment on the current day take on these ideas to the general public. i can give my opinion of what lies ahead for these 3 characters and i can give my opinion applying your statement to them.

about your decision to "mask" the metal with skin, i dont think that works. because these cyborg-ninja's are not completely metal. they were orignally human. they are still human undersneath. im not so sure about whats with smoke tho because hes all elemental, hard to immagine where the organic form resides.

sektor and cyrax on the other hand, have human bodies underneat there exoskeletions. they are organic AND "robotic".

Cyrax is in complete control over his actions and his human spirit is in control thanks to the special forces efforts. his personal goals come from his human mind, not any sort of AI or non organic source.

Sektor is physically the same. has his human form underneath. however, damage to his circuits during a battle has caused him to go haywire. he has human traits abd objectives such as power and control. loyalty to the clan remains as well as the objective. just as he was before. loyal and precise, the ultimate assassin. but the AI has somehow fused with his concience, giving human traits with AI intentions. any normal AI would just be "kill subzero". which is what he tried, and was defeated (a good thing). i feel it was then his human concience that made the decision to build a colony into the tekunin we know. as an AI would just try repeatedly.

i feel that sektor within a game or two (assuming he makes it through the MKA cut) will gain his human concience back and show deep remorse, wither changing his character completely, or just before his death in a battle. he will be human again IMO.

on that thaught, id like to point out that it is foolish for the mk team to throw away such an opportunity for the plot, with an entire army of warriors. they could be the next black dragon.

so i believe all 3 of the cyborgs will be back. and i feel all 3 of them within the enxt 1 or 2 installments, will once again be human, good or evil... but human...

Bad idea. I like that Sektor was the only one to embrace being a machine with no regret. I like that he views normal humans as inferior beings. Wh did he take it upon himself to wipe out the human leaders of the old Lin Kuei and try to remake it in his image?
He already is the Agent Smith of Mortal Kombat. Having him feel regret or guilt would ruin him. He should always be the "bad" cyborg.

If Sektor returns, they should run with his dehumanization. I think they hsould emphasize that in his appearance by making him look less and less human. The idea being he's constantly upgrading and adding to himself and more and more distancing himself from humanity because he views it as weakness and inferiority. On that note, we should never see him without his helmet. I wouldn't even have him talk...at least not like a human (as he did in Armageddon's Konquest).

If Cyrax were to return, I would contrast his appearance by making him appear sleaker and more streamlined as opposed to Sektor. I think that would suit his role in the Special Forces, since he acts as sort of a spy/gatherer of information for them.

If Sektor and Cyrax are to battle, Sektor should win. If they want to build Sektor as a worthy foe for Sub-Zero and/or Sonya, he should overcome Cyrax.

As for Smoke, I'd keep going with his elemental look. Some want him to become human again...which I'm not really into. But some feel he should progress from being a pure cyborg in some way. I say running with his ethereal look is the good way to go. I'd like to see Smoke become more wraith-like if he continues...this strange being seemingly made of smoke with maybe some cloaks...kind of like the Phantasm.

I like that ALOT. I am absolutely in agreement with personality affecting what the character looks like. Makes me think that if Cryrax were to stick around, the US SForces would "refine" him.

Basically trying to make him more human-like, efficient based on human strengths, and allowing him optimal control over his own anatomy and thought processors. I feel comfortable agreeing with ShaolinChuan and XiahouDun84.

"Sleeker" or "Streamline" are key words, iRobot-like is something I could absolutely see happening for Cyrax. Maybe giving him a removable mask for his face fits too.

Like the one Matt Leblanc used in Lost in Space(1:21sec), but clear so that we could always see his face and the mechanisms attached to, and inside his head. Even though that was a space suit...the idea of something like that could fit for a Future Cyrax.

He'd be the cyborg with quiet hydrological systems, super fast nano processors, and top secret bionics and artificial "fill the blank" technology.

I can see Cryrax now...Knowing the USA, or more importantly, Humans, they'd try to reproduce Cryrax in some form...making him the captain of his own fleet. Drones or Un-Maned Infantry isn't a false reality right now in real life actually. But I could see them pitting the two forces against each other then too. But that's an off the wall idea...

Now, coming into an idea like Cyraxs', and taking into account what some of you have stated, I could probably see Sektor going in the route of having that Brainiac complex.

Um...I'd say, concentrated metals for armor, and nano tech is not out of the question...He's likely the "transformer" out of the two of them.

I like your idea for this one XD84, he should be the cyborg that can "control" everything. Giving him the ability to transfer whatever consciousness he has to his other robots in the Tekunin. Like the tightly woven network Agent Smith had in the Matrix.

This is what could win him a fight with Cyrax....because it would be emotionally stressful to see Cyrax defeat Sektor a bunch of times, only to go down vs the sheer number of the Tekunin, and the control over that number Sektor has. Maybe they even assimilate him since he's already cyborg.

hm...

I don't like Smoke at all right now...but

I was thinking sort of the same thing. If they brought this guy back, they should just continue on this path that they're on with him. Making him more and more of the element that he's supposed to represent.

Shadows and Smoke. Though I think they should just present him differently more than anything. For instance, say I punch him in the chest. There should be a defense move for the player of Smoke that makes my hand go through him or something.

Keep that tombstone teleport move that he had cuz it was a very good representation of "where" actual smoke is all the time..."Everywhere".

I'm thinking I disagree with you about him remaining an actual smoke figure though...I hated it when I first saw it. I liked the mask, but I hated the way he looked overall.

I think a better way to take Smokes appearance, is a modernized ninja. A regular guy, no mask or anything. Let us see what he looked like before all the training and everything...give him a back-story of him being a famous magician or something in his time before dedication to the Lin Kuei....

Then one day, he masters the actual art of disappearance. He could have stubbled on it before he was a ninja, and or it could have been something he sought out to do once he was in the Lin Kuei....like what NightCrows version of him in the Fan Sub Forum suggests.

Could even have Raiden come to talk to him while he was invisible one time....convincing him to join or something.... Magicians are usually thrill seekers, so in leaving all the mischiefs and frivolousness of being famous for something truly new, he might just have found real purpose in the Lin Luei. "Never to have been Seen again"?

Never know, but I think those are some pretty different ways to approach a character like Smoke. By Mk8 and beyond though, I want the threat of Smoke to be a true surprise. Give him a regular name.."Reginald Cunningham, the English Magician" or something.

eh..

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

I do not like the idea of having robots in the games at all.

I think Mortal Kombat should focus more on the fantasy side of fighting eg. special powers, gods, different and/or wierd species etc.

But if they focus more on the modern and/or technological side of fighting, eg. Robots, military (special forces), outworld investigation agency etc., then MK will just become just another fighting game.

So yer, I really think MK should focus more on the mythological and fantasy side of it, rather than the technological side.

So I think the robots need to go.

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

If Sektor, Cyrax and Smoke are to return, they should continue on in their present directions.

Sektor is the only one who is still fully cyborg as such. His mentality is now psychotic and ruthless. He should continue evolving and become more machine and should utilise advanced technology. He can be either bulky and powerful, sleek and agile or a combination of the lot. His look may become less humanoid as he progresses in his story. Sektor should be able to utilise weaponry forming from body parts like the Terminatrix in Terminator 3 or even have his own body morph into a bulkier or slimmer form at will. There's alot that can be done with him as long as they don't over the top. He should also be a strong hand to hand warrior, able to download many styles and abilites like Cyrax did in MKDA Konquest which was a nice nod to the Matrix trilogy.

Cyrax is the one who has his soul restored. as such, he should endeavour to be more human like but never fully so. He should probably look more like his alternate costume from MKDA and MKA only less machine and a bit more human. He should be able to now define himself with a personality and dress himself accordingly but never less sight of the fact that he is still part robotic. As such, his costume should always have some robotic features but should stress the fact that Cyrax is trying to be more human.

Smoke is a little more complex. Given his morphed technology, he should now be appearing more ethereal like. The cyborg look should therefore then exist only as an illusion of smoke - a wonderful play on his name. What I mean here is, that he should and probably could or will eventually become a being of pure gas and should be able to fuse all of this gas together to make a solid entity. As such, his physical appearance would be one made up for himself by his own imagination which could utilise a mix of human, cyborg and smoke. Any, cyborg or robotic features would purely be a makeup of the smoke he has fused together. Also, with this apparent make up, we then allow Smoke to have some special moves and abilities where he can shift his body make up at will, so people could punch through him (his body changes from solid to smoke) and they do no damage. That's an evasive technique. He could also become pure gas and melt away into the atmosphere, ground etc as a teleport. Or make himself full vapour like the Stinky Cloud move if they advance on him. I made a thread some time ago detailing such techniques although they were combined with Noob's partnership and help for MKD. Of all the cyborgs, Smoke is definitely the most interesting imo. I may just write up some ideas and plans for him.

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

Sektor: Most likely our uber hi-tech brawler. He stays metal. He never turns into a human, ever. I don't think he sould be a terminator because he really dictates on his own logic and cares only of the good of his clan. The second and third T-Movies really state that difference between those T-100 units and the T-100 of T1, the T-1000, the T-1,000,000 (in the Universal special) and T-X. More than likely, Ketchup will end up more like the first T-100.
In the future, I'd expect Sektor to end up like Braniac (As Pred stated), having a large network of copies attaining powers and information for him. However, if he dies, He would be a useful tool for noob's army of Cyborg Demons.

Cyrax: Now I see cyrax turning Human thanks to the shockwave. Maybe he'll end up a human like in Bicentennial man. That movie's robot spent decades (20 to be exact) in order to finally become a human. If this happens to cyrax, I'm sure he'll take it well. However, if he returns to the arena in the next MKs, It would be more than likely that Mustard might need to become a Headmaster/Targetmaster like in Transformers. He would still be human but he can keep the abilities of his cyborg form (ie nets, bombs, saw.).
Story-wise, Cyrax would best fit a high-ranking official in the OIA.

Smoke: Smoke is probably the most interesting of these three. He could either die, stay an unwilling slave of Noob's or regain humanity.
If he dies, his only likely path is as another ingredient in Noob's coup for power. There's not much else he could do dead, because the vultures don't like oil and smoke.
If he remains an unwilling slave, it wouldn't be long before a revolt happens. Soon enough, Smoke would beat up Noob and either die (in which case, see the above paragraph) or be free to choose his own fate (Which seems to cliche for my reference, unless we turn him into DC's Amazo.).
Should he return to human status, he could be free to do many things. He could either reunite with his friend Sub-Zero and rejoin the Lin Kuei, become a rogue assassin, retire or a good list of other things. This path (humanity) would probably work for the best.

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

Cyrax
- I want to see a destroyed man that needs his cyborg armor to live. Mostly looking human but with some drastic features. Enlarged veins and an offset skin tone, pale almost grey of his normal. What the original Lin Kuei did to him should have an everlasting effect.

Cyrax is the only one capable of fighting and ignoring his programming thanks to the OIA. So he could be fully independent without anybody else’s influence.

The irony of Cyrax is he’s the fighter that values human life the most, since he knows what he lost.

Sektor
- In konquest, Sektor mentions ”The tekunin are no longer bound by the flesh.” Ever since then, he seems a lot like Agent Smith with a possible ability to shift his memory into another tekunin once he is defeated. This could be the cause for radically different looking designs. But how can he be defeated? If he does have this ability, is he virtually indestructible?

Like the other users here, I don’t want to see any shed of humanity left in Sektor. In a way I can see characteristics of Sektor in people, those that blindly believe in something and don’t ask questions. (no religious intent) being loyal to an unhealthy degree.

Smoke
- I like his elemental look, konquest showed the best of him. He’s the backbone of Noob Saibot’s scheme, with his ability to possess and transform people into cyborg demons. Concepts for his gameplay moves are almost limitless, smoke anffixation(sp?) and mind control.

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

Cyrax - I think it's kind of pointless to have him as a robot, if he has already been turned somewhat back into a human. Though he should keep his ninja-like ways. MGS4's Raiden, perfect example for Cyrax to turn into... but yet that's stealing concept. But yet, keep in mind that all great minds think alike.

Sektor - Sektor should be somewhat of an unstoppable cyborg if they're thinking about the return of his Tekunin army. His personality in Armageddon's Konquest was awesome, and if he continued acting like that more in these games, then he should become an unstoppable force.

Smoke - I really lost interest into this character after seeing his new look in Deception. If a return, make him a lost soul. I sort of have no real idea what I think about this character.

CHEERS!

I don't know who that is, nor am I interested.

There are certain villians I appreciate being able to sympathize with or see as tragic figures. Mileena....Reptile. There've been subtle hints Shao Kahn may not have always been the way he is....which I'd like to see fleshed out. I like the tragedy in Noob Saibot's story...even though I never want to see him reform either.

But there are some villains I don't want to ever sympathize with. That I don't ever want to see show remorse or guilt. Tanya....Quan Chi. And most certainly: Sektor.

I see Grey Fox and Sektor as very different characters and I have trouble making any connection between the two story-wise. Fox is built up to be a more tragic character. His humanity was built up through the story and developed over time rather than a suddden event. This is why his final confessions and death were fitting. As Frank Jaeger we know Fox was a killer, but felt remorse and this is why he adopted Naomi. From what we know about Sektor and his loyalty to the Lin Kuei it is unlikely that he felt remorse for what he did in the clan’s name.

As far as we know Grey Fox didn’t voluntarily undergo his cybernetic research, it was either done to him or it was the only way for him to survive as where Sektor chose to become a cyborg and does not show remorse, he probably doesn’t even have the ability to feel anything. I find it hard to even say Sektor has embraced what he is because I don’t think of him with that type of conscious. Through the game we see that Fox is very human and moves away from his technology with a goal to show the importance of the mind and consciousness instead of the physical and technological. They are not similar in terms of physicality. Fox doesn’t hold himself above humans like Sektor. He seeks out Snake as an equal. To fight, and to lose.

Some people prefer the finer things in life. I'm alright just hangin' out with the ghost of Vincent Price.

I really never understood that little "floatational" thing Sektor had if he lost one round and came bac kup to his feet. But if they should fly, there should be jet packs installed on ther backs. Have them like pop out from their backs.

Floating without any device doesn't make a whole lot of sense with a robot. If anything should float without a jetpack should be demons.

This idea isn't lame. And if anyone of them should fly, it should be Sektor once again.

You know how in MK3/UMK3 you have the ability to make Sindel fly during matches, well Sektor should have this too.

If Smoke makes a return, and you know how I said he should be a lost soul. He should "litterally" be a lost soul. Like another shadow-like character. Have his storyline be based about how somehow his soul was taken out from his robotic body and he's searching for a new body to posses. Like the ending of Quan Chi, where he kills Shang Tsung and all the souls fly out and Liu Kang's soul flies right into Kano. This shouldn't happen to Smoke in his ending. Though this lost soul character should not be another Noob Saibot in which I mean, he shouldn't have the same or at least identical moves as what Noob has or had in the past.

We do need another shadow charcter, face it, sometimes shadow characters are wickedly aweome, but we only have one. And thank heavens that we don't have a female reincarnation of Noob. Because that would be pathetic.

With Cyrax, if they go with the human side, he should have new powers. Though he could keep some of them. Like with his net power, he could shoot his net out from a gun of some sort or throw a grenade with a new coming out as an explosion. He could throw bombs either close and far, and he could still do that kick from Deadly Alliance, though, there should be someting different for that one if the kick was not that popular in the creators' pont of view.

I like this thread a lot. It brings out the best of me in my descriptions for characters. Make another one Pred!

Think any of them should fly? Or is that kind of a lame Ironman ploy?

I really never understood that little "floatational" thing Sektor had if he lost one round and came bac kup to his feet. But if they should fly, there should be jet packs installed on ther backs. Have them like pop out from their backs.
Floating without any device doesn't make a whole lot of sense with a robot. If anything should float without a jetpack should be demons. And if anyone of them should fly, it should be Sektor once again.

I agree that if any of the cyborgs should fly, it should be Sektor. However, I really think it isn't necessary for him. Given his look and arsenal, it'd just look clumsy. Sindel flying works due to her look which allows one to see her as a witch, gothic or even superhero type character flying around. Essentially it's an illusion that works. Sektor flying around just looks like Sektor (a cyborg) flying around. Also, given his attacking arsenal, he'd be firing missiles from his chest given the current abilities he posses and the animations for that would be pretty awkward. If he were more like Iron Man as such, it would work a bit better but in game it may still look awkward, especially in 3D which is probably another part of the reason why Sindel didn't have her own flying ability - alongside the fact that it would have been hard to make it work in 3D.

My overall opinion is that none of them should fly - at least not in game. I feel they are all better suited as ground based fighters. We know Cyrax has the ability to fly thanks to his helicopter propellors as seen in his Fatality in the earlier games. He doesn't need to use this in game in a match and it could easily be referred to in the story perhaps.

Smoke should not fly at all. He's heading towards being an ethereal so he can disperse himself and travel as a smokey haze in the air, whether evasive or just travelling around in the wind like the Sandman does in the Spider-Man 3 movie. Again, the travelling in the air should be saved for reference in the story. The evasive technique could be used in game but this would be ground based. It could even be turned offensive if he dispersed himself forwards as a projectile came at him to avoid damage and then combo.

Lastly, Sektor should stay grounded but but the boosters he possesses should aid movement so as to propel him upwards or in any other direction if needed. He'd have assisted jumps or boosted forward or backwards movement in order to attack or evade. Cyrax has again already displayed this sort of thing using his Air Throw special move where he was boosted into the air in order to throw a jumping opponent. Boosted movement may be the way to go with them rather than flight. I think it'd be a bit cooler and alot more helpful.

Cyrax: I like his unmasked black man face. That makes him stand out from the other cyber-warriors.

Sektor: Since he's so much into the Tekunin and stuff, I think he should get more and more robotized as the story unfolds.

Smoke: I craved his ninja appearance but that wouldn't make sense in future games, so he should get less robot-looking and go more ethereal being of smoke style.

RE: What do Robot-Characters look like for Mk in the future?

I'll break my opinions down by robot.

Cyrax- I agree with above, i like the black-faced Cyrax, it makes him stand out from the crowd. Personally i would like to see Cyrax's character dive deeper into the humanity he lost because of his automation. Perhaps he begins to have visions of the family and life he once had or something of that nature and goes on a quest of self-discovery to unveil his own past. Something like "if I don’t know where i came from, how can I be sure i exist at all".Out of all of the robots I think Cyborg needs to be the closest to human.

Sektor-Since Sektor is so involved with the Tekunin thing, which if I'm not mistaken is a Japanese based clan, I think Sektor should embody more of a samurai role. It'd be badass to see a more Japanese styled Sektor maybe with an really long Odachi like this Big Ass Sword or even a Magari Yari like this Magari Yari. Here's a better picture of the Magari Yari Better Pic . But imo Sektor needs a more stylized samurai approach to set him apart from just another robot.

Smoke-Smoke has always been an enigma to me, he needs to retain a mysteriousness to his character even if he is a robot. Maybe give him more ninja like tendencies and appearance but still retain his robotic form. I’m not really a big fan of the ethereal thing but that’s just me.
