Thoughts? It's pretty crazy, really. Redstone effectively gave the company away just to get some of the debt off his shoulders.

EDIT: Beat TPB by 1 minute. I rule.

Who in their right mind would assume 70 million dollars of debt?

So let me get this straight.

1. Redstone sells 80% of Midway, and writes off 80million in debt out of 1.6 billion dollars of debt.

2. New guy buys 80% of Midway for 100grand, and accepts 70million bucks in debt.

So,...It's less debt for the new guy(much less), than it was for the old guy?

Good move if that's the case. I didn't know that the primary share-holder was 85yrs old either.

release 1 mortal kombat game, and it will consume that much debt. Should be easy if they do it right. It's a smart move. It seems really generous of Redstone.....he took a huge loss on this maneuver.

The $70 million in debt was part of National Amusement's $1.6 billion in debt. The $800 million loss for Redstone is unrelated to the debt; is just the cost of acquiring the shares, minus what they sold the shares for. Since losses are deductible (well, more or less, a bunch of rules apply), Redstone gets a big tax break.

Well if I'm looking at it right, and the right guy now has the 80% of the company, "ideolgy" might change. Means he could, for instance see more potential in MK.....or, he could suggest the company go in a different direction, with new marketing of new games.

The primary share holder really doesn't have control (per say) over the itemization and regular operations of the company. Share holders have "a say" in the way things can be governed in the company. How they'd like to see things handeled per quarter/bi-annual//yearly...ect.

They don't handle logistics intamately, but they do have the power to move properties in whatever direction they'd want.

this would mean that....hm. Take Mortal Kombat.

The primary share-holder (and the other board members) could say

"Mortal Kombat is making us most of our money, let's dump a crap-load more money and resources into that game, and turn it into a whole global project. Movies, toys, multi-media campaigning...the works. We'll be neglecting the other titles greatly BUT, this will take care of that 70mil in debt(or over consume it, which would be preferred), and gain a greater interest in MIDWAY as a whole. From there we'll decide what to do with the other properties//game titles."

Hypothetical of course but, that's kinda what a share-holder//board member is capable of. They could choose to expand, or minimize spending. So this could mean that Mortal Kombats long time excuse of "We didn't have enough time"....could become less of an issue. Because this new guy ( and the rest of the board members) could decide to give more money to Mortal Kombat...or take it away....or sell it....or whatever else.

Course that's not everything...but hopefully that can put a few things into perspective. IF I'm looking at that the right way.

The death of Midway, should it ever occur doesn't necessarily mean the end of the franchise. Mortal Kombat is a big name that alot of companies wouldn't pass up the oppertunity to buy.

Yeah...midway looks to have met it's match in the financial world but I will sayt his...anyone that thinks MK are dead because of this are kidding themselves. I totally agree Keith, someone would pick them up along with Boon and the MK team. Just please, whatever MK's future is let it be an American company to pick them up EA, M$$ someone...no foreign take overs please...us has had enough of that crap already with other companies and topics.

BTW, in a newer interview via OXM, Boon says how he feels about this scenario if Midway flat out died tomorrow all together. Listen to hear his responce. I thought it was rather intriguing and I don't blame him. It's also about MK vs. DC and what he would do if Capcom wanted to make a crossover tomorrow with SF.

Technically speaking, seeing as how Redstone is no longer burdened with Midway's $70 million dollar debt, it's more like Midway was "sold" for $71,100,000...And, as a major shareholder, this new guy calls the shots!

MK won't die. It's a popular franchise and somebody will buy the rights to it if this Thomas guy decides to do away with it.

I would like to see Ed Boon continue though. Some complain about him, yes, but let's face it he makes MK MK.

If anything, I would be worried it would be the opposite - that they would flood the market with half-baked MK ideas ALL of which aren't finished products, just to get more out there, more often.

As long as they keep making MK games and don't drastically change the brand, I'm good.

Too late to jump from the ship when the hull is already underwater.

Unlikely that anyone would be interested in the Mk franchise, save perhaps EA.
