Spotlight: Updated Mortal Kombat Dragon Logo Comparison

It started with a simple white circle, but in a matter of a day - it transformed into an all-new Dragon Logo!

The klassic symbol for Mortal Kombat has become the avatar for everything from Ed Boon's twitter (@noobde) to the official MK Facebook! As we count down to a June 2nd reveal -- it's a done deal! This is the new symbol: Kombat will kontinue!

Click to Enlarge: Comparison of Klassic & Updated Dragon Logos.

Fans have been pretty quick to embrace the new design, which differs only slightly from the classic serpentine silhouette. The new logo could be best described as tightened up. The eye is more narrow and focused forward. The nostril smaller and similarly oriented. The mouth is a fraction less, with a more steady, graphically appealing curve to its overall shape. The dragon clearly bears his fangs along with a flickering tongue.

A sharper, more vertical axis generally compliments what looks to be a far more aggressive symbol than the classically indifferent dragon of the original version. Who could complain about that? Not series co-creator Ed Boon! According to him, the NetherRealm team like their new logo, too!

What are the implications of the new logo? Well, that's certainly something to ponder. The last game introduced a busier, bevelled Dragon Logo - updated with three-dimensional detailing. This simplistic, black & white symbol takes us back to simpler times of the iconic original. Could this reflect the philosophy of the new game?...

At present, most theories for the Mortal Kombat (2011) sequel centre on a continuation of the rewritten timeline. That has us expecting a starting point based on version of a Mortal Kombat 4 plot. That story saw the fallen elder god Shinnok wage war on the Heavens from whence he fell. Does this more aggressive dragon represent the predicament or attitude of the Elder Gods in this new game? Don't forget -- it was they who empowered Raiden to claim victory at the end of the last game's story mode!

There is, of course, the massive success of the previous game to consider [read more]. At the height of its pop culture powers; Mortal Kombat made brilliant use of brand awareness by sometimes running only the iconic dragon trademark in its promotions. That seems to be the philosophy of the apparently leaked poster. Perhaps now was simply a good time to give the old bird a bit of a revamp.

What ever the case, we like it! We want to know if you like it, too! Register to share your thoughts and theories about the logo on the forums! I like the before more, but maybe it's because I'm so used to seeing it? The shape of the eye in the updated logo throws me off especially.

I wonder why they decided to change it slightly. I mean the differences are clear when you look at them side by side, but obviously its nothing drastic.

The new logo looks more aggressive and menacing if those are the right words for it.

Pretty obvious at this point it's a new MK game.

I like it overall, it's pretty much the same, except a little sleeker. Except the eye, I like the old eye better. This one isn't quite as eye-ish looking and more like a simple shape.

I like the logo redesign. I just hope the seemingly menacing theme carries onto the feel of the game itself.

The eyes is made to look sharper. When people look at u in a bad way, it's usually with narrow eyes.

I don't know what it is about the new logo, but I'm absolutely in love with it. My favorite of all time by far. This wait for the new MK might just kill me.

The "new" MK logo just looks like a joke-logo, and I hope it is.

Excellent! I hope a countdown starts so we get a specific time it's announced, refreshing all day will be a pain.

I don't really like the eyebrow area. It doesn't look angry to me, it looks like a kid who's gonna spend the rest of his life in special ed 'cause he got hit really hard in the skull with a baseball and now his skull is dented in.

The new logo just looks lazier.

Like someone was supposed to do an update but got bored or something.

I would've be wary of NRS countdowns after the last few times. j/k

New dragon looks like it received a new "hairstyle". Instead of bang on its head, it's now have a smooth greased hairdo. I think its maybe a temporal logo and the more detailed version will be revealed alongside game anouncement. After detailed MK9 logo this one looks quite strange.

The new on isn't bad...the old one is just way better.

I can see why some of the changes were made but, the tongue and the eye throw it off on the new one.

Aside from the dented-inward forehead, it looks more 2-dimensional. The reason there were two eyebrows, two nostril bumps, the first two horns were closer together, etc. was to look like the dragon was turned slightly sideways and had depth. This just looks flattened.

Honestly it looks alright. Don't really care though either. Not nearly as important as what's in the game.

RE: Whos Next? Updated Mortal Kombat Dragon Logo Comparison

Eh. The changes are subtle enough to make you wonder why they even bothered. I like it...but...I don't know.

How do you improve this logo? You do too much, you risk drawing the ire of the hardcore and losing the brand recognition you've already had established over the last two decades. You don't do enough, and the response is lukewarm(like it is). Tough cookie to crack for sure. I'm happy they went minimalist on this one.

There are bigger sacrifices one might be asked to make than going a little mad.
