Spotlighting Character Artists Unique Take on Fan Favourite - Ermac!

Before anyone gets too excited - we're just gonna come right out with it: We don't think this is concept art for the in-production Mortal Kombat X. That said - it doesn't mean we can't still call attention to this amazing piece of Ermac "fan art" by Bernard Beneteau!

"Here is a concept I have been working on during my spare time. This is a fan art piece of Mortal Kombat's Ermac. Sculpted a maquette in ZBrush, rendered in Keyshot and textures/paintovers in Photoshop." [Bernard Beneteau via ZBrushCentral]

If the name Bernard Beneteau seems familiar to you - bravo! It should. He's been featured on Mortal Kombat Online several times in his capacity as Senior Character Artist for several NetherRealm Studios games.

Beneteau started with the team back at Midway Entertainment, contributing to Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe! That practise clearly came in handy as he then continued in his role through Mortal Kombat & Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Some of his character design artworks featured include: Baraka, Raiden, Smoke, Bane, Green Lantern & Black Canary.

Calling any of this "fan art" is probably a bit rich, but in the case of the Ermac images featured - it comes from the horses mouth (or file name)!

The top image was retweeted by Ed Boon just a couple of days ago, when it was sent to him by a fan. This says to us it almost certainly won't be included in Mortal Kombat X -- but it could very well be a nod to the character's ultimate inclusion. Ed calls it "mean looking" -- we call it an interesting, almost Scarecrow-esque take on the patchwork warrior!

Mortal Kombat X will be featured at the upcoming E3 event in LA [full preview], where the first gameplay and new characters are set to be revealed! So far it's only been Scorpion & Sub-Zero starring in reveal trailer and promo art. Could Ermac be right around the corner?

It's more like different variations of the head so the team can choose. V1 and V3 hoodie is the same and only the neck part changes (my english isn't good enough to name the thing that goes around the neck and behind the head lol).

Pretty awesome look, I hope this is legit and it seems to be. The scarecrow-like looks is terrifying, they're doing a great job making Ermac look more and more fearsome each game.

It's been out in the world since February. Beneteau himself calls it free time fan-art. Ed Boon retweeted it after a fan sent it to him. Right now, the short odds are well and truly on this not appearing in the game. Never say never, though. Right? [More info in main article.]

This concept may indeed not make it in but I'm pretty sure this may mean that Ermac is.

But we shall see. *pulling my imaginary hair out of my head*...these two days leading to E3 can't go any slower.

I would be more than happy if this design made the cut, it looks freaking amazing! This look reminds me of Scarecrow from the Batman universe. This concept looks extremely detailed, and I'd even go as far to say that it looks even more detailed than the new Subzero and Scorpion character models from the trailer.

But of course, if this guy is no longer working for WB then chances are there is some legal crap behind it and just like other awesome things, won't make it into the game.

Thank you! I mean I like the hood and everything but what's with the outfit? Ermac looks like a rockstar or something, like he wields around a guitar that steals souls.

Don't get me wrong, the concept has incredible detail but I think it would be a better look for a different character entirely and not Ermac.

Ermac has been one of the most consistently improved characters. I was never really too keen on him back in the MK3 days but ever since they've reimagined him as less of a ninja and more of a supernatural mystic he's become one of my favorites.

Agree, not a fan at all of this for Ermac. Looks more like a new character.

The quality of this render is outrageously high and it just looks cool. Does it fit for Ermac? No. It doesn't really seem to look like him to me. This would be great for a new character though like a new sorcerer as others have proposed. That would be cool as hell.

Looks awesome. The best part about it, it seemingly incorporates parts of his MK9 design.
It could be easily imagined, that after Kahn's destruction, Ermac fall on a hard times and his look changed appropritely, from lavish mystic to ragged sorcerer. Sadly, most likely it's just fanart. But maybe they will make it as DLC costume? I'd bought it in a heartbeat.

It's very similar to his MK9 alt, so I could see them going with it in a game.

Personally, I didn't like his 9 alt that much. I prefer looks for him that harken to the Deception vest with the E-shaped seams, the turban-like wrapped head and the Third Eye gem.

The whole ragged-looking hooded trenchcoat covered in belts thing is a little too derivative of other characters and franchises like Assassin's Creed, Final Fantasy, or even Scarecrow from Batman.

I like this design for him. Really does make him look more "scary" as he should be, because he was Kahn's "secret weapon".

I dig it, I think this is the best Ermac has ever looked/ best concept. The "Mummy" stuff was fun for a while but I dunno... I know A lot of fans don't like it but I think it's really solid look for him. IMO the mummy stuff is kinda a transition from Ninja, he really looks like his own character here who has never heard the term "pallet swap"

IMO it fits well with what we've seen so far (even if it doesn't come to be)
