after seeing nest's post about tag teams, i was motivated to post what i've been thinking about for the longest time now.
i used to play this game a loooong time ago:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit-Fighter
that was one of my favorite games, but then sf2 and mk came along.
however maybe about a couple of years ago when i started improving at these MK games and looking for stronger and stronger challenges, i thought that the ultimate challenge would be to play the role of one of the 'bad guys' from pit fighter. in other words, 1 player vs 2 others at the same time.
here's how it would work- let's say... Pig is the guy hosting this sort of mega endurance game. then, say... mav joins the set and he and pig await for the last guy to join- say... atari.
Pig accepts the set of players and starts the game.
now, you might be thinking how the heck this will work. you might think that a 3d game can't be played this way, especially with camera angle issues because of the placement of the characters on the screen. I've thought of this plenty, first you've got to remember that every player has his own screen to look at and that this wouldn't work if you had 3 players in the same house looking at the same screen. i think the following WOULD work though:
think of a flight fighter's "lock on" feature. at the start of the round, on pig's screen he would see the "lock on" cursor on mav. after "fight!" (pig on one side, mav and atari on the other) the 3 guys would move in whatever direction they wanted, but since pig's cursor is locked on mav, pig's camera would work the same as it does now for pig vs mav, but with atari roaming in the background or foreground (mav and atari's screen would both focus on their game vs. pig with their team mate roaming in the back/foreground).
whatever Pig does is to combat against mav, until pig decides to switch the cursor onto atari, in which case the camera angle immediately switches on pig's screen to accomodate pig vs atari now, with mav in the back/foreground. mav and atari's screen's are unchanged, being that their focus is vs pig.
The challenge for pig is to fight one guy while avoiding the other or quickly switching back and forth trying to take down both. a mild example of this are the swinging bodies in the netherealm ship (offline) that can actually hurt you if they swing at you from whatever angle they come in from.
as far as i know this would be the first gameplay of it's kind and would probably be a blast to play. a 4th player could also be included (a partner for pig), because of the camera angle "lock on" properties i just talked about.
imagine the possibities...
atari's scream from sindel and mav's ice from frost coming at you at the same... what do you do?? (a la 'speed'
)

Nice ideas Easy, this definitely works in 3d space!
I'm sure you've all heard me talk the poop out of the Naruto GNT games (gamecube/wii), but man I ain't lying about how good it is. Check out how it's 4 player works, not far off from what you were suggesting...
These matches are just examples and IMO terrible... Aside from normal 1v1 games, you can setup: 2v2, 1v3, 1v1v1v1, 1v1v2, or 2 player tag-team matches with up to 3 characters each.
There is an arrow at your feet pointing to your target, and pressing Z cycles your opponents. You're basically always facing your opponent unless he sidesteps, teleports, or jumps over you.
This roughly what you were thinking??
peace
