MK history tells us that during Kahn's invasion of Edenia, a General of that realm went out to meet Kahn on the battle field and was slain. This was the father of a young Rain.
Now imagine this; the General wasn't slain by Kahn, but as Kahn was about to deal the final blow, begged for his life in return for a spot in Kahn's army, and his help taking down the Edenian infrastructure? Imagine if this character was non-other than Reiko?
This would give Reiko tons of depth, and storyline cred; possibily even resulting in him having a big role in future adventure games and such; so what do you think? Could Reiko actually be Rain's father, the Edenian general?
Perhaps his gloomy appearance is the result of some curse bestowed on him by the Gods of that Realm for selling them out to Shao Kahn? Perhaps his glowing eyes, and some his more undead traits are actually from Kahn corrupting the general a'la Sindel? Or maybe, Reiko fell in Mortal Kombat against the Great Kung Lao, and came back as a wraith?
The possibilities for Reiko's powers are endless, but the storyline idea that he is actually Rain's father, is imo, a great twist for an otherwise INCREDIBLY boring character.

I really like that idea, and it could make him a lot more interesting.
But I don't think he's old enough to be Rain's father, so it could never work in a million years.

Uhhh how do you know how old he is? Kitana is 10,000 and looks only about 28; Reiko looks about 45, so he could easily be Rain's father.

I dig the idea but it really makes his placement in the timeline off. If that was his story, he should have turned up in MK2 or 3 not in MK4. I'm assuming he'll be tied to Shinnok somehow. Probably not tied to Kahn at all.

Well, to be fair, the could insert him into the MK 3 era, he was just fighting off screen (sort of like Baraka and Tanya in MKDA.)
Also, the possibility is, he died and went to the Netherealm at some point in his long existence, which meant when Kahn was presumed to be dead, he returned to the Netherealm to fulfill his duty to the Brotherhood of the Shadow, and when Shinnok was defeated, returned to Kahn's side.

If they Edenian, nobody looks their age so it COULD happen. Dont be so sure about yourself all the time man.
This another great thread, you keep em coming Ermac! This especially is a great idea, ad you said it would add some needed depth to Reikos story line, i dont think it will happen but it could and it should! But this would go against Reiko wanting to dress up as Shao Kahn, i mean why would you dress up and want to be like somebody who captured you and forced you to fight.

Good point there and this is an interesting theory. It could happen and it'd be a huge turn around in both Rain and Reiko's stories if it did. I'd be all for it as it'd make up for the craptacular stories both had back in UMK3 and MK4.
Also, Reiko had greyish hair in MK4 and that could be a sign of his age.
You see theories like this and realise that the MK Team probably never even considered suhch things. Shame really.

Reiko never worked for Shao Kahn, just Shinnok I think. But your theory is awesome. Too bad the MK team doesn't have the imagination you do.

uhhhhh. The war between shinnok and the elders happened twice the first which was a shit long ago and the second MK Gold so Reiko could be centuries old or just plain ol 30-45 years old...it was never confirmed which war he actually was in but he was confirmed to be a general. But even during that time reiko was fighting as a general in Shinnoks army, He also fought as one of Khans minions and also was part of the Brotherhood of the Shadows. This makes him undoubtly evil. So with that said i dont see how he could ever become head general of Edenia's army....to make a switch that drastic is like having kano become sonya's partner...it just doesn't fit.
Honestly it would be neat but reikos story is sadly already established...its plain yes i know but thats just midway for ya.

I think you misconstrued what I said.
The idea is that he was Edenias general 10,000 years ago, and betrayed his homeland for a place in Shao Kahn's army.

I know most of them didn't volunteraly switch sides, but I just want happy times for Edenia.

Did Jade really betray Edenia? They never said she knew anything about Edenia while she was serving Kahn. She could have grown up with no knowledge just like Kitana.
On topic, IMHO, I'm not keen on the idea of Reiko being Rain's father. I won't say it doesn't make sense and I won't say that it couldn't work or happen. And, in any case, it would be nice to see Reiko have some more backstory...and it'd add something to Rain as well.
BUT...if anyone's followed my posts, they should already know where I stand on what Reiko's story should be. Less Shao Kahn shit...more Netherealm and connection to Sareena shit.

Yeah, I know Jade didn't really "betray" Edenia, but I just want to stop seeing them get shoved around for awhile.

Excellent thread man, very interesting and well thought out.
As to take parts of your theory, I will give you my thoughts:
Reiko as one of the most boring characters in Mortal Kombat needs a good story line for MKA. And I actually love your idea. But if the full out story of Shao Kahn slaying the general of Edenia, then it must be true. Midway isn't going to make a full out story for their game, and then all of a sudden change it.
But I think that a good reputation fro Reiko does need to be given to Reiko, as this might be his last appearence in Mortal Kombat. And remembering Reiko in MK:4, I thought his complete bio was serving Shao Kahn for his whole life, and being jealous of him not being emperor, bladadada. Now with that information, that couldn't git with the theory you just gave. Good thoughts though my friend, good thoughts.

I like the Idea of Reiko being Rains dad his costume on MK4 was close to accurate no one say "NO it wasn't" cuz Reikos MK4 outfit is closer to the original Rain's outfit then Rains new one is. Plus Reiko and Rain sound close by name soo... there you go. they have a strenge resemblance.

They never said that. All that's really known for certain about Reiko is he is/was a Netherealm general who fought in one of Shinnok's wars against the Elder Gods. He was thought to have been killed, but mysteriously returned during MK4. And at some time in his life, he was a minion of Shao Kahn.

That is really where I was going with that concept. But once in his life time can mean his whole life, partly, etc. It is all a matter of theories and guesses.

yeah it is an awesome idea, but it could make rain's Story a bit uninteresting. I prefer to see Rain go after Shao Kahn for killing his father and try to avenge Edenia.

What if Rain went after Reiko for following a course of action that killed his mother and his homeland?
