Can you perform a stage fatality if you are nowhere near a deathtrap?

Assuming that you are in an arena with a deathtrap, and both fighters manage to avoid it and manage to go to the full 2 (or 3) rounds. When the announcer says "finish him / her", can you perform a stage fatality? Even if you are quite a distance from it?
I mean lets say you are in the middle of the skytemple. To kick / hit your opponent off it you'd have to be near the corners, right?

not on the demo at e3. if you were not close to the trap then you could not finish them. sorry maybe they will change it.
