Hey Guys,

I was thinking. We all know Mk2 is the best game for its gothic fairy tale style. One thing I loved about the first 3 Mortal kombats is that it actually got dark before a fatality. I read in the very first MK instruction manual that it was due to the Kombatants drawing on the forces of darkness and death, and thats what allowed them to perform the fatalities with seeming super-human power. If one thinks about it, this is a cool concept. The kombatants use the powers of darkness (not evil)to perform feats and spectacles of Death that orindary fighters could not ever dream of doing. Anyways, I was really dissappointed in MK4 as the stage never went dark. I was glad to have it back for DA and deception, but something is bothering me about it asethitcally. I liked being able to see the same background, just slightly darkened. Now it seems that one can not see beyond the two kombatants. Any thoughts on this ?

Chris.

I really like that explanation about how fighters are able to perform fatalities. I never heard it before. I hope it's explained in more detail in Konquest mode in MKD. I also think that the screen should just dim and not go completely dark. This thread deserves 3 to 5 dragon points.

Yes very good Idea i didn;t play MK4 so i didn't no about this missing. So your right when a fatality starts instead of all black like the sun gets covered with a black circl or something that would show dark powers. and that its like dark in the background but you can still pick out the objects with your sight but it's hard to this would show gothic a lot. Also would be a cool feature. It could be different for every character Like for smoke a smoke haze could fill the room. Then like Raiden it could get dark storm clouds. ALso if they don;t have a special way it would work the the sun going black idea would work. Etc... It was just a thought I got a lil carried away lol WHat do you think.

First of all, the fighters do draw upon their powers in order to perform the feats of "super-human strength." While this may not necessarily be dark power (killing isn't necessarily evil), they are drawing from their power in order to perform certain abilities, as you (topic creator) stated.

Second, MK4 never went dark.

The reason why it goes completely black now (except the floor) is because no matter where you perform the fatality at, it will always look right. In MK4, in certain spots your opponent would go through the wall, and it would look stupid. The black backgrounds are a necessity for 3D MK, otherwise it would have clipping/performance issues if you could see exactly where you're standing.

Just a side note on this topic. In the same manual it sade the reason lui kangs fatality did not make the screen go dark, was because his was the only one that drew on the powers of light.

This got dropped however in MK2

I don't remember that in any manual. I think that was just a technical issue. It could also be the fact Liu Kang's fatality wasn't very "gruesome."

No he is right. The manual for MK1 does say that Liu Kang gets his "super ability" from the light side, not making the screen turn dark for the fatality.

i think that MK:D should have the same as deadly alliance, but the whole screen should get dimmed and only the characters should be bright, and you should still be able to see the backgrounds they will just be dimmed and the characters willl not be dimmed so you can focus on the FATALITY!
