Describe a "Hari Kiri " ...

I beleive it's Japanese for Ritual Suicide.
The way it works is, if you get beaten by someone and they attempt to perform a Fatality on you, you can put in your own button combination to perform a suicide move on yourself.
Basically, so you can die with "pride" instead of being killed by your opponent.

The difference with real life and MK is that in real life it's never anything more than plunging your sword into yourself, possibly head snapping, but I've heard one of them in MK is ripping your own heart out.

Samurai would preform a hara-kiri if they felt that they had dishonored their lord or shogun. The way of Boshido says that it's better to die with honor than to live with shame.

So in MK terms they not doing Hari-Kari's properly, they're just using the name Hari-Kari as a better name than something like suicide fatality

Pretty much so, yeah. But I guess the honor goes to the guy who got beat. Instead of watching your friend finish you off with a fatality, you can end your life and end the match with honor. So the purpose of the hara kiri is more symbolic than practical.

Hari Kari is the Japanese Traditional way to kill yourself to regain your pride and honor. In Japan you use a dagger and drag it straight up and make criss crossing marks from your belly button and up. I bet Boon can think of a ton of great ways for characters to do a Hari Kari, maybe of it was Stryker doing the Hari Kari he'd make himself explode or maybe I'd be for a Cyborg, lol. =-)

True, but the real meaning of Hari-Kari's goes flying out of the window, an honourable death is the whole point of Hari-Kari's, you can't just change it's meaning just because it's being used in a MK game.
By the way some MK characters are going to do them they aren't really Hari-Kari's, they're just commiting suicide, there's a big difference between just commiting suicide so the opponent can't do a fatality and a real Hari-Kari, but as said before the symbolism is there for the beaten player to regain their honour even if they're not technically real Hari-Kari's.
An example of a real hari kari in a computer game would be Tekken's Yoshimitsu but it can be done during the fight, instead of at the end.

So far the only traditional Hara Kiri I've seen was Hotaru's but that's probably because he's a samuria.
I was just wondering, if you do a hara kiri before your opponent does a fatality, how would it look on the screen. Will it say something like, "Hotaru lost. Hara Kiri" or will it say"Nightwolf won, Hara kiri" either way, it's going to sound wierd. Also do you think that Hara Kiri is going to be spelled in blood like Fatality or are the words going to have a different design like they did with Animalities and Friendships.....Just a thought.

well, its just the whole fandom thing of MK. Unless, youre a fanatic that is into the whole honor thing, it's going to be in my mind jsut something to piss people off, by not letting them get to do their fatalities and it's substituted by a much weaker one, if its going to be like jsut snapping necks and stuff like that cause I dont think youre gonna see someone maul themselves, its prolly gonna be a quick death.
Also, I did not get why they would put that for a move for Yoshimitsu I just think it's pointless in America, cause around here at least peopel say you went out the pussy's way and not be like well you died an honorable death and get a pat on the back.

it will most likely say something to show you did it. hari kari is just you killing yourself with honor instead of dying at the hands of your foe.

Well that's the difference between America and China, it's case of respect for the beaten player, China has it, America doesn't.
What's hard to understand about Yoshimitsu having a Hari-Kari (which is the right spelling by the way), he's a honourable manji ninja, it's likely that they follow a similar code to samurai's.

In Japan it's called Seppoku.
And Yoshimitsu had it because not only did it do damage to him self, but if it was done as a turning suicide, at close range to the opponent, it would shave off half of their life also. Plus, Yoshimitsu had his regeneration move, so he could afford to loose life in huge chunks.
I drove my friends crazy with that move in Soul Calibur 1 and 2.
