The only time I EVER Disconnect is either:
a) when something goes wrong, like a sudden black screen for a long period of time and the actual fight not loading (could be a problem with the other person's PS2 or copy of MKD), or the game freezing up on me, or...
b) when my online opponent is doing something that I know for a fact does not happen under normal circumstances (in layman's terms, CHEATING!)
I have a four-star ping, so my connection should be optimum. However, sometimes (and on very rare occasions), my DSL link can get lost. And I won't even run the risk of playing online during a thunderstorm, as that could cause a disconnect, as well.

The game is getting sad to even play. People now realize that you can unplug your network cable from the PS2 and a connection sync error will happen, causing the match to stop with no disconnect penalty.
Those tactics are what -RAMBO- and Highness use (and many many many more use those tactics as well)
I went 3 fights with -RAMBO- last night and I gracefully accepted the first 2 losses. The 3rd fight however, I did win, albeit by death trap, only to find that before I was granted a win, -RAMBO- unplugged his cable and I was given a connection sync failure.
Almost everyone is doing this online for the PS2 now and it's really quickly becoming a load of crap. It seems that people are too worried about their rank to actually take a loss. I'm ranked 56 or so and I don't mind losing because I know I'll get it back, as long as the person I'm killing isn't also an unplugger. At the higher numbers you'll find that most people are disconnecting just to keep their rank.
Anyhow, WTG -RAMBO-, you do truly suck and are in no way shape or form rightfully ranked 5....If you weren't an unplugger, you'd be ranked around 4000 or so, which is about right for your skill.
