Mortal Kombat deception had problems, but the thing that I always found impressive was the artistic reinventions. They threw away very tried-and-true appearances and reinvented classical character models, making Scorpion look significantly different, Subzero look drastically different, and Ermac almost completely different. MKDA had some nice approaches as well. We got to see Kung Lao through a tmore formal lens, although Reptile looked strange, he adopted the primal appearance. Fuck, Shang Tsung looked like he was wearing oven mits! That's change, for ya. But now we're at the "reboot" of the franchise: the game which resets everything. So why are we gravitating back to the old overused appearances?
From the trailer, it seems they're basing Subzero's appearance off the classic MK2 design, while Scorpion (as far as I can tell at least) seems to be sporting the UMK3 ninja suit as usual. Nothing looks bad, but the new MK should be an opportunity to expand these characters artistically. If Subzero is still the headmaster of the Lin Kuei, he should look like one, and not like a foot soldier. Then again, everyone's assuming this game is taking place after MKA, or at least I am. Hypothetically, this game could place during any point in the MK timeline.
Does Ed Boon think that a crossover between the two franchises requires everyone to look "more MK"? We've already seen that. These characters have been developed for 15+ years; why shouldn't it appear so?

Alternate costumes. Old school duds for classic sakes.
Actually, that's one of the first things I thought while watching the teaser. I agree with you completely on the design issue. If they're reworking everything from scratch then the fighter's looks should be updated as well. Especially with the new graphics engine, it's a chance to go crazy design-wise. You never know though, it could have been an alt and pehaps the default design is much better? Or Vice Versa.
Btw, It's good to see you again man. Been a while.

Why are MK fans so obsessed with new looks for the characters all the time? Have you ever played King of Fighters? Those characters NEVER change. At all. And people love it.
Get over it. Scorpion looks like Scorpion. Sub-Zero will always look like Scorpion, only blue. Reptile, etc. Noob, Rain, Hydro, Ermac, Tealninja, Orangeninja, etc.

Maybe they kept the costumes simple for the teaser just to make sure the characters were recognizable to all fans, and they will update the looks cloer to the game being done, kinda like they did with MKDA, the first pic of jax made him look like like mk3 jax, but when the game came out he looked completely different.

Wow, TomTaz. It's been a while. :) I'm hoping what we saw was an alt-costume. Any classic costumes should be alts anyway, since the primary costumes should be those which most reflect the storyline.

I still love your parodies. :)
King of the Fighters and other games can get away with it if they have consistently good fighting engines. Plus, I don't think any fans want to add MORE clothing to Mai. But I apply to the same to those games as well. After 20 years, give Ryu's costume a good wash. I'm surprised the thing is still white. :P
