"Moving the characters can be done in two ways: the d-pad will cause them to move left, right, and jump on a 2D plane; the left analog stick moves the characters about freely in 3D. The face buttons are pretty much what you'd expect from any Mortal Kombat game -- two for kick, two for punch. Double tapping towards your opponent causes you to run, and one of the shoulder buttons is block."

Oh, I am very much liking the looks of those controls. I think this is the first game I've seen with separate jump and 8-way run commands, which I think more games should find a way to do. Also, incorporating a double-tap run was a great idea on their part.
While everything sounds awesome, I do feel kind of sad we are back at the 2 pucnhes 2 kicks attacks, ONLY IF the style of fighting for all characters is the same.
I hope they are more unique, as if each character had a certain original way of style, attcks, etc.
General attacks like the 2d games was good back then.
But then again, we cantjudge till we play, and honestly, it looks super fun.

What?
The MK games ALWAYS had the 2 punches/2 kicks layout. In fact, pretty much all of the 3D fighters I've seen do.

So then what do us Joystick players do?
Are we completely screwed?
Are we completely screwed?

Most fighting games have a few punch buttons and a few kick buttons but I'm happy they didn't change it "too much" it is MK afterall, so in that respected sense it shouldn't change.
But yeah, I have no problem with the more 2d gameplay and 3D optional movement. I'd say 95% of players online in MKD and MKA hardly sidestepped anyway except very few players. Besides, since at least in those games most moves "tracked" you meaning the moves still hit you if you sidestepped so I'm honestly not concerned that much with this.
I do like the side stepping from the looks of this game, looks more fluid, faster then the previous few MKs

Yep, looks like we're screwed
I have never been able to effectively play any fighter with a control pad. Using the shoulder buttons for anything during a fight spells instant defeat for me.
I hope there is an alternate control scheme in which a button can be held down that allows the "Z" axis control(in or out of the field). If there's any knock I currently have against this game right now, it's the control scheme for the 3D movement.
Peace
Street Fighter 4 is going to be played 2D and I'm happy. Now that MK is going to be played 2D, I'm even more excited. I was never one to sidestep much either... otherwise the best game to provide it effectively was Tekken in my opinion. Tekken felt like a 2D game whereas at the same time you can tap up and down twice to do a quick side step, and that's all the side-stepping I really needed.
Now that MK also has the FF dash, I'd be pretty excited if it used the UU DD side-stepping method too, but the analogue shouldn't be too bad, I'm sure I can get used to it. Again, I won't be using it much anyways and I play fighters mostly with the D-Pad anyways. So, I'm happy with the way this is coming out.

Yeah, I agree. Most players don't use sticks except some a select few and it's right next to the D-pad so how hard can it be? It's going to be a new game anyway, which will take everyone to get used to as should the control scheme
Me too, I rarely if ever SS especially online with lag potentially messing you up I'd rather player is safe with just the 2D movement, unless I'm far away and want to dodge projectiles which I don't see being a huge problem in this game like say MKA Sareena's knives, Dai's fireballs, etc

This is the SECOND time I've seen the run thing worded this way and it drives me nuts. Opponent means the person you're fighting, NOT the one you're controlling. So when I double tap forward I can make the other guy run forward, awesome!
Idiot reporters, always raising my blood pressure.

Double tapping (i.e. in the direction )towards your opponent causes you to run.
How this wording could confuse anyone is beyond me.
