I just picked up a magazine called the video game collector (issue 7). Anyways it has a Mortal Kombat section with a brief Mortal Kombat history and an Ed Boon interview. I just want to share some things I found interesting.

One thing that caught my eye is when they asked Ed Boon what his favorite MK game is. His answer is UMK3 for 2D games (not surprising) and MK Armageddon for 3D, he followed that up with "You will see why soon." Just curious, because it seems like they might reveal something about MK Armageddon, who knows.

Also, I have noticed that a lot of people are under the impression that John Tobias left under bad terms when he quit Midway. However the interview asks if Ed Boon still talks to John Tobias. Ed Boon's response is "Yes, I still keep in touch with John. He is a good friend and I can't wait to see what he is going to do next." There it is from the horse's mouth, Ed and John are still under good terms.

They why doesn't Tobias return? He should work on MK again.

He was like the biggest baddest character inventor. As soon as he left, character concepts and designs started getting shitty and lame.

Why is it that the classics remain the most prominent? Because Tobias freakin created them! (not all, of course.)

He should so return. It would only help the series.

And I heard that he left because MK started going down hill in the late 90's, but now that it's back up and successful again, why hasn't he returned?

I disagree completely. Sorry, but the series is back up and successful again basically because the left of Tobias. The only negative point is that Vogel hasn't the same "creative power" like him, and sometimes Boon make mistakes in favor of n00bs at the cost of the story...

Tobias lacked the necessary talent to make something decent in terms of characters. He based the primordial characters on false informations and tidbits of history. After MK2 it went into the grinder and produced shallow, one-sided ripoffs of popular culture.

I cannot really say the same from Vogel, aside the Darrius alt. MK4 nearly killed MK because of the characters. MKD nearly killed MK because of the fighting system

You know, maybe John Tobias is looking to do different kinds of games. It's like if you had a guy doing just one comic book for decade after decade. You're going to get burnt out and get bored with it. Maybe it just happened to Tobias sooner than the rest of the MK crew.
