If you're asking if the Wii is backwards compatible and will play the Gamecube version, the answer is yes.

Does anyone know if I need a special controller for the Gamecube Deception game to work on the Wii?

I received my game today, it tells me to press 'A' but won't advance past that.

I am using the Nintendo classic controller, also tried the Wii controllers.

When you first turn a Wii on, I'm pretty sure you absolutely have to use the Wiimote to navigate the menu and start the game.

Once the game actually starts though, you can use a Cube controller. It works that way for me, anyway.
