Gamespot article: Old backgrounds playable in a way?

The end of the gamespot article I just read indicates that the oldschool backgrounds are playable, at least in the chess game...quote:

The demo features the monk temple from the original MK (complete with clapping monks) and the portal and death pool from MK II. The backgrounds serve double duty, since they are also the arenas you'll fight in when you clash with your foes.

Heh..the Deadpool. That's exactly the stage I was thinking of when I saw the Deadpool chess pic.
The battles are pretty much 3d as well, right? Or is it 3d graphics with 2d movement? I couldn't tell.
