GameTap: How did you decide which characters to include and which ones to skip?

Ed Boon: The decision is based on several factors. One was popularity. And I would associate that with recognizability. We don't want to pick some obscure character that nobody would recognize. No matter how cool he is, there is no value in including Krypto the Super Dog in the rosters. But then there are those characters that fit into the Mortal Kombat universe. And again, a character like Super Monkey is another extreme example of a no. There are gray level characters, and then there is variety. We didn't want to have everybody with the ability to fly, or everybody with blatant superpowers. So we started thinking in terms of counterparts. We have this brooding, dark Sub-Zero guy. Who is the counterpart to that? Batman.

GameTap: So, I have taken a pretty big dislike to Aquaman over the years. Is Aquaman in the game? I mean, seriously, his superpower is to talk to fish.

Ed Boon: I guess I'm supposed to say I can't confirm any characters other than the four. But just try to think of Mortal Kombat characters known for their swimming.

GameTap: Can't think of any swimming characters off the top of my head.

Ed Boon: Well, you'll have to keep thinking.

Boon's here tells to the interviewer to think harder. Rain came into my mind as a counterpart to aquaman who is a very popular DC character. Thoughts?

yea i saw this in some other thread yesterday...sounds interesting...wouldn't mind seein rain/aquaman in the game...as long as i get my Mileena im satified with whatever roster :)

LOL, Aquaman is cool. I like his water powers.

But I doubt these two are in the game. And this kind of contradicts this thread:

It has a lot of new characters "confirmed" in an interview, but if what Boon says is in fact correct, no one knows anything for sure except for the already known 4 confirmed characters.

I guess it'd have to be Rain. But I think this is a joke though. I mean, what kind of stupid moves could AM use? Throw a fish? That'd be two wasted slots IMO.

Sadly, this looks mostly like it's going to be a popularity contest for the remaining characters in the game.

Well, I'm still pushing hard for the likes of Bane, Lady Shiva, Richard Dragon, Mister Miracle, The Question, Nightwing, Hush, and Azrael. Especially Azrael.

Na it has to be Rain, but hopefully ed was just joking around. Aquaman would look gay and not fit in the game.

*Ahem* Allow me to present an idea that the rest of you haven't thought of...

Boon was more than likely trying to show that NO MK character was a counterpart for Aquaman, and therefore he wouldn't be in it. Rain's got water powers, but he sure as hell isn't recognizable outside uber-fans. I would say Reptile seems more a swimmer, honestly...

He didn't confirm Aquaman or any MK character--remember that.

Wow... If Aquaman can swim in his own element, So could Rain. You think Rain would have a problem swimming if he can control the element? The only other thing that would make sense is SUB-ZERO, because in MK3 he could turn into a Polar Bear, and those can swim aswell. Same with Cyrax's Shark Animality, & Raidens Electric Eel.

I think folks Are reading WAY more into this than is necessary... Let's just ask ourselves this: If Aqua Man is in the game, what powers would this guy have? The ability to put your opponent to sleep? Every stage would have to take place near water if he's going to call fish in to help..Good lord, he's just half-cocked Dr. Dolittle. He can't even talk to other animals! He's...useless..

Either Aquaman's not in the game, or he is and Midway's designed one new MK character to match him, and if they did...ye gods.

That's a dumb idea. Don't tell me Kabal is gonna be in this to give the Flash a counterpart. Ugh, how annoying.

If they're basing it on personality, then Johnny will be in this cuz I think he counterparts the Flash in that sense.

Oh, this game sounds so annoying already. But!.... the gameplay might be fun and I wanna know more about the new story mode they're whipping up, so I'm not completely against it.

I shit on what we know so far, though.
