Okay, one aspect that a lot of people didn't like about Jax in MKDA was his "ghetto" attitude: his "Aww yea," "Check this out," etc., and, of course, his alternate outfit. But the question is, do these attributes reflect black stereotypes, even exploitation of urban culture, or do they reflect cultural diversity?
Is there room for "ghetto attitudes" in MK? I remember a thread a while back saying MKD should have a Mexican character to represent Latino "flavor." However, there was another thread in the MKDA forum questioning the MK team's motives for giving Cyrax, apparently a black character, the style Sambo, since "sambo" is also an old derrogatory term for blacks (along with such terms as "coon," "picaninny," "mammy," and others, it was also symbolic of one of several popular depictions of blacks designed by the media to show whites that blacks should be "put in their place"; for more info, see this site: http://www.ferris.edu/htmls/news/jimcrow/menu.htm).
There appears, therefore, to be a discrepancy between sensitivity and diversity. The representation of ethnic minorities in video games, as in all facets of the media, is a complex issue because of the prejudices and racial tensions in our culture which many would like to think of as long-dead, but in fact, are still alive and well.
So I want to know, how do you guys think ethnic minorities should be depicted in MKD, and any future MKs? Should diversity be a goal in the realm of character creation? What about "ghetto" attitudes like Jax's in MKDA? Do they promote and exploit prejudice, or do they add refreshing diversity?

I hate JAx, and the only reason why i DO LIKE him is his ghetto attitude, so thats what makes jax cool and i like the alternate also, thats makes him cool. the metal arms in MKDA look to cartoony and didnt look like the MK3 ones.
Also a mexican could also be a badass dude. when he hits a nasty combo he could be like eddie Guerero from wrestling. Odaley Essay!!! LMAO i cant speel good but oh well.
Hey holmes, hey essayyyy.
man jax is the worse fighter that actually should NOT be killed off, but the ones that should be killed off are worse then jax. jax and kitana are on thin ice kitana is the most garbage fighter i have ever seen in MK he impale is a risk and her moves suck ass i have always hated her.
But i guess i like jax, his ghetto attitude is what makes him cool in the game. But he was definatly my ALL TIME FAVORITE in the movie.
Jax was even better then smoke, scorpion and subzero. Jax weak ass looked very strong in the movie fighting Motoro who would in the game whoop his ass and kill him easily.
he took those metal arms off and started whooping ass, OH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
he should be able to lose his metal arms in the game since they arent his actual game weapon, his game weapon is the tonfu, so he should be able to lose his metal arms during battle, that would be cool.

Heavy stuff man, heavy stuff. Well I can put it in the words of Bruce Lee if I can rememeber it: "The only time a China men can get a role its always ching ching fortune cooky for you" Well it was something like that. Im a mexican and i'll admitt it I made a thread saying MK needs maybe a mexican or something like that and i got flammed for it. And I was simply trying to see what people would say. And I would have to agree with You and Bruce here I mean not all mexicans are batos and chollos or cheech or chung. Now all though I sometimes act that way myself but I dont like to portray myself like that im a intelligant witty and fun to be around mexican and i hate when people call me a gansta. I once was but that part of me is over. But If this is the only way a mexican would ever be a part of MK i'de welcome it from the degree that a mexican is finnaly in MK but as a Chollo drunk no way. Thats my opinion take it or leave it.. Wrdlfe21 aka Antonio Jesus Andrade

LOL a mexican in mortal kombat?
Jax never had a gangsta attitude EVER. You all are so prejedice, just because Jax wears somethin' that a black guy would wear you guys imediatly call him a gangster or a stereotype. Jax's attitude is not gangsta either, trust me I live in an area where there are PLENTY of gangstas.

jax..never really had the oppurtunity to act like anything in the old MKs cuz the characters really couldnt do much but fight...and who says the way he acts is ghetto??..i dont think hes ghetto..Now if he wouldve been made with his pants around his knees and a mouth full of gold with some big ass diamond earings..and drove around in a 87 geo..then he wouldve been ghetto..cuz obviously.with the money he spent on earings and teeth..he coulda bought five geos..i actually think his alt. looks kinda gay.his "vest" is way to small and and a lil too bright fer me.but hes far from ghetto

Biby128 is right, I live in the south and a lot of "gangstas" live here. Jax really isn't ghetto..if he was he'd be wearing a fubu shirt and shit like that and he'd be saying "dat watchu get biatch".

I like to think Jax is like every other African American - when it comes to his work, he is very very serious (MK1 movie serious), but he also knows how to have fun when work is over.
| Wanderer Wrote: Jax's "gangsta" attitude, on the other hand, was blatantly stereotypical. Jax's character has NEVER acted like that. |
Of course he never acted like that, none of the characters had personality. Now that he has more personnality, some people have something against it.
People who don't like Jax in MKDA probably have something against urban culture. There's nothing wrong about his personality.

I can't believe a topic like this can even be raised. Whether what the original post claims is true or not, this entire subject will only bring about more infighting among fans, which is something we've already got enough of.
Does no one think Lui Kang was a stereotype? Why is such a subject brought up only after Jax's recent appearence?
You're all welcome to your opinions, and to voice them as you wish, but in *my* opinion, I think it's better for everyone in general if we avoid such topcis here. We have enough of it in our day to day lives to worry about without having it fill up our leisure time as well, guys. Can't we waste our time bitching about who is a crappy fighter like normal?

Hmm. I'm torn. On one hand, I doubt a special forces operative and a major in the military would decided to be stereotyping while fighting to save the world. On the other, he was personality-devoid until MKSF, where he acquired his thuganomics routine.

I know for one, the gansta thing should be "X-ed" out. In no way is he even acting gansta (I lived in neighborhoods with them...I'm black also, so I do have some insight). Another thing about the gansta thing, there are different definitions of it nowadays in the black community which is a positive one. Anyways, back on topic. So what if they are portraying Jax as more of a black personality that is well known (NOT GANSTA). If they didn't and made him more of a "regular" person, people would be kinda upset since they won't give a man a personality that might reflect him (we don't know the whole LIFE of Jax, now do we, we just know he was in military, who says that he couldn't be a bad seed and went to military but still kept his roots). If you are talking about stereotyping, he is stereotyped by the gaming world. Most black people in games are like Balrog or just a big strong guy, which he is. The clothes he wears is just personality. The oratory that he was givin is what they wanted to say, and that isn't reallly stereotypical because what I know of the black community, you RARELY hear what he says in that TYPE of way. I think they should make the game diverse which they have and everyone has a personality. I'm not saying be stereotypical but be rational. You wouldn't want to hear Scorpion "Get yo ass over here!" To the people who talk about this topic shouldn't be addressed, I think otherwise. This is something that should be addressed for people think that way. For the people who say that we shouldn't talk about the matter because we are talking about something we are trying to get rid of but it still lives, uhm, if its living, why not talk about it. Its in our hearts no matter what. Everyone is racist their hearts (VERY DEEP) , but the ones that try to keep it to the minimum so low that it really isn't a matter of color, they respect each other and that's all people want. Heh. I'm tired now. Ok. Bye.

This thread was bound to make people mad. We can all state our opinion, but it will hurt others feeling later on. Race is a touch and go subject and most of these kind of threads don't make it very long. Somebody will get angery and the flame wars will start. I will play Jax no matter what he looks like or sounds like. Check your brain matter later. DSB
I Think Jax's Apperance Is Racist.And Liu Kang's!!
Not Every Asian Man Screams And Does
Bicycle Kicks!!!!!I Dont Understand Why Jax Has
To Try To Dress More Like A Black Person, Now I'm
Black, And Find That very Sterotypical Even Though
He Wasn't Dressed Like That Before!! Why Start Now?

It's not racist. All because Liu Kang yells when he's fighting dosen't mean all Asian's do that.It seems like your taking it that way.Really, have you ever seen a Asian person scream in REAL LIFE.The answer is NO.I still don't get why people only see color and not what's inside.People are People no matter what color they are.Im not flaming you, Im just telling the truth.

Color doesn't matter to me. If the character can hold his/her own, looks descent, and has some cool moves, they can be any race they want to.
When i saw Nightwolf for the first time, i was like, cool and Indian. Lets see what kind of moves i can do.
When i played as Jax the first time, I loved it. He would pick you up and pound the shit out of ya. He was my favorite character in the coin op for a longtime til MK3 came out and Kabal and the Cyber Ninja Klan were my favs.
If there was a Latin American, Im sure they would do a good job with incorporating him into the story and having him be a great fighter.
There is no need for hatered here. It's just a game and most here just like to talk.

Not even Bruce Lee himself yells when he's really fighting

I'm sorry if this thread upset anyone, I know it's a controversial subject, but as Sub-Zedox said, it's an important issue that should be addressed. However, I ask that anyone who wants to give their opinion do so in a way that's respectful of others, and doesn't interpret a simple disagreement as racism.
Regarding what I said about Jax being "ghetto," (keep in mind I never said he was a "gangsta") I realize he doesn't talk or act like actual "ghetto" people, but it seems like Midway went out of their way to point out that Jax is black. The question that this raises for me is, was this meant to celebrate cultural diversity, or is it exploiting an ethnic stereotype for comic relief?
