I haven't seen either there, although I've heard mention in Edenia of Jade several times, but the mission isn't needed to unlock Liu Kang.

I think you do need to do the quest because Ive tried to unlock him in a friday at 12 midnight but it didn't appear in the tent.

please post anything you konw about this

You don't need to do the mission first. The liu kang chest is actually BEHIND the tent (towards the right side) Friday at 12am.
as far as the mission i didn't even find it until after i had liu kang. AFTER id gotten liu, i met rain who was looking for jade. i went back to the tent and jade was there, with two guards. she says to go back to rain and tell him where she is, so she can kill him. when you then go back to jade, she pays you, over rains corpse.
weird thing is, later on you can go back to the tent and shes there again, even though you pass her and rains body on the way there. just a glitch i guess.

Just stay behind the tent, and the chest will appear at 12 AM friday. If you're meditating stop around 11 PM so you can have a chance to get the chest.
