MK has to compete with Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, and a bazillion others (Bloody Roar, Dead or Alive, etc.), but once it was king of them all (God bless MKII...). Do you think MK:D will reclaim the top position as the best fighting game created (dethroning Virtua Fighter 4:EVO or Soul Calibur II, depending on the fan-boy)? Or, perhaps you already think it has? Please share. Fatality.

I will say that it will not. It seems that it has the same fighting engine (which is crap imo...its too sticky and moves doesnt move fluidly). I'm sure it won't beat Soul Calibur (not the second one, the first one...which I still think is the best fighter). :P

It'd be a dream if MK could be #1 again, but I have doubts. Games like Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, and Tekken are the big dogs, especially with SC2s overhype(its great, but got too much press). Unless MK gets a complete overhaul, it'll never be a top series again. Thankfully, the series still has a huge fanbase built up over a decade, it'll never hurt in sales,it just won't do much to bring in new fans.

I disagree. The whole re-vamped engine for MK:DA brought in SCORES of new fans who had never even cared about MK before. MK:D will be the MKII for the next-generation. With online, I think it could be HUGE! I mean, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter, Tekken, and Soul Calibur... none of them have gone online yet. This is revolutionary. Fatality.

The online won't matter if people point out glitches, exploit them, when most of the moves in MKD are useless, and when one combo can win the match... MKDA's engine was something new, the idea was good, but it was applied badly... realism for fighting styles was the main emphasis, but not their usefulness really... even if you had MK be the 'top dog' in sales in reality it wouldn't be that great of a fighting game(I'm talking about the fighting engine, not the fatalities, death traps, etc).
the changing styles would be cool if all the moves had a purpose... which they don't... a lot of fighting games have two striking attack buttons and have tons of complexity and freedom, if the three style concept were to be developed correctly with the four button stike attacking set-up (using the other two, on Xbox white and black buttons, for throwing and maybe one for reversals of some sort) you could create the deepest most entertaining and enthralling fighting game ever conceived... if the MK team would take the time to develop the system correctly...
Don't ask 'what correctly is' there have been many posts about this, but check the 'After playing VF4:evo MKD looks like crap one' dispite its name page 13 and 14(a lot of others, but thats the only ones I can pick off the top of my head) has examples of developing them correctly...
Even if MK didn't make as much money as some of the others, but I guarantee if these fighting system comments were implemented it would be, but even if it didn't it would still be the best fighting game ever... lets see... most excellent fighting system + awesome dark storyline + interesting characters + online + fatalities(stage, death traps, Hari Kiris, normal) + all the extras... nothing could top that...
Even if the fighting system was okay... as in all the moves had a purpose, dial a combos were less rampant, better throw and reversal system, faster gameplay, and more of a custom combo feel to it... it could compete for best fighter... because the goodies would make up for it... but for now we'll have to wait for MK7 to recieve any reall updates on the fighting system... later

it might be the best but tekken will always beat it if they never stop focusing on mini games than the gameplay.

i'm not going to comment on your eye-sight then
tongue j/k

I hear so many people complaining saying don't judge it until you play it when I'm saying bad things about MK so I'm going to say the same to you, and take a bit more time to play those others before you go saying they suck, or atleast tell me why MK:D is going to be better Note: I've heard the whole MK has 3 styles excuse many times, I'll just leave you with this though, have you never played as Lei Wulong or Hwoarang??? they have more than 3 styles and have combos and tenstrings just as good as anything in MK if not better, Lei looks brilliant in those stances, an expert playing as him will be hard to beat. Hwoarangs moves might not be labelled with a famous martial art name, but then again Tekken's character's always did mix styles instead of having to change to separate one's.

and just remember as the thread title suggests it's a comparision with the other fighting games, don't go off topic going on about the story, I know how much better MK's story is from the others, stick to the topic at hand please.

Now that that's out of the way I'm all ears to anyone who wants to convince me otherwise.

Hmmm...Mk 2 was the greatest fighter at one point, but when you look at it this way- MK 6 is going to have kombatants new and old, a ton of new arenas and fatalities, an rpg-type mode in conjuntion with the krypt, new mini games, AND its online...(xbl, baby!) i think this is mortal kombat's turning point in fighting game history.

The only things off that list that actually make any difference are the characters and the fact that it's online before the others, but eventually the others will be online.

Sales wise MK: Deception will do fine, as a game it'll have to improve in the future.

i think that they only need to make the every single atack can fit in a combo that includes specials and changing styles between, for making it better than the others

The dial-a-combo system will make it NEVER beat out the other 3D fighting games. Everything else has been covered that I was going to address. I like MK:DA more than Soul Calibur II, but in terms of a fighting game, SC2 beats MK:DA by a landslide.

Mortal kombat will always be the most famous fighting game, sells the most but fans will always complain. The reason why mortal kombat fans always complain is because we know they can do better, they offer stuff that the fans love then remvoe it the next game, you might not even see puzzle combat in mk7. confused

I think MK tries to be "fresh" and new, while still trying hard to be a Mortal Kombat game. MK:DA was a HUGE departure from previous MKs, in game-play, style, storyline, kontent, even music score and Fatalities. But, they had such things as "Test Your Sight", as well as the classic characters. It was "restrained", though, IMO. Fatalities were no longer as central. Fighting styles took high priority. The horrid coin-system of the Krypt and the dozens upon dozens of Kontent made it a different MK, for better or worse. I liked MK:DA, and, aside from MKII, it's my favorite of the series. But, MK:D has the potential to do something greater, to take what MK:DA established and ellaborate upon it. I think it'll be the MKII of the next-generation. We've begged and pleaded, bitched and complained, and we're getting what we want out of this game. Online? Check. Multiple fatalities? Check. Stage fatalities? Check. Tons of returning characters? Check. More immersive Konquest? Check. More secrets and mini-games? Check. Better graphics? Check. Better control? Check. Every MK character ever in one game? Check. Interactive environments? Check. You name something that was wrong with MK:DA, and Boon and co. are working their asses off to fix it in MK:D. It'll be great, even epic. This may be brash, but I'm saying MK:D will be the best fighter for the next five years, what Soul Calibur was to Dreamcast, Tekken 3 to the PSX, Street Fighter to the SNES. Fatality.

I think that Mk:D will come out better then all of those games, i always found Tekken verry boring, Sc was cool but got boring, and those r the only 2 games i would worry about really. I mean look at Da that sold more then both of those. Now look at Mk:D, this game looks like 20x better then Da ever was, with all the new modes and stuff is sure to bring in new fans. I think Mk will be rated top once again, although there will always be a few ppl that want to complain about little stupid stuff or just ppl that prefer diffrent types of games.

It depends on the individual and how they define "Best Fighter".

If you are like the vocal minority in the gameplay bashing threads then this game will never be the best to you. If you fit this category then you have already decided before MKD has even been released.

If you find that you enjoy an epic storyline, a cast chock full of charismatic characters, numerous entertaining ways to finish fights, a few fun ways to play online, stacks of secrets and twists (deceptions), then arguably limiting gameplay may not be enough to stop you thinking MKD is the best fighter out there.

If you think you'd rather be competive with 24-40 different characters as opposed to just 1 or 2 then perhpas MKD will be for you.

If you think the most fun game is the best then you just may be pleasantly surprised with MKD.

If you play all the so called best fighters on the market with a truly open mind and try to enjoy every aspect each game has to offer then I predict many will choose MKD as their "best fighter".
