Yeah I am in the process of doing that pretty much. I got everything possible in the village, but after that I don't think I opened a single chest. I just want the ring and headband to see what the fuss is about. I also wanted to test out a theory that you have a choice sometimes in your actions, but sadly it doesn't seem that way so far. Except for talking to Liu Kang in Outworld who gave me some koins after I talked to him after talking to tanya (but before map). Everything else has to be done in a certain order (can't give kamidogu to lin kuei, can't change the ermac vs. ashrah battle thing by not telling him where to find the tower, and many other things). That's too bad, I had hoped that your actions matter, but it looks like they don't. We'll see about the pie and edenian water though. I'm still in outworld. (can give pie to different people, stole bucket from first village to fill with edenian water)
Anyway, there hasn't been a real difference so far.

I have a theory about the koloch portal if you dont collect nothing and go through that portal maybe something new and different opens up.

I personally think that if Boon said to not be greedy, that he would be meaning that if you go too fast you'll miss certain things. As it seems with Sindels ring and the Head Band. Possibly completing every single quest unlocks something more, but that is going to be a hard feet to accomplish.
