Let's Talk Tournament Rules.

posted03/07/2004 04:29 AM (UTC)byYeah, the tournament scene will be INSANE for MK6. Weekly,Dailys,Monthly..the works, but what about the rules? Lets go over a couple things..perhaps come to some DEFINITE conclusions about universal rules.
1. Round Robin or Brackets? Well, this is a solid question in my opinion. Obviously Round Robin takes much longer, and it is definitly not as preferable when we have MASSIVE tournaments(like 30+ people). However, with Brackets it goes by much quicker and more smoothly, but we never really get to find out certain things. Like suppose I face ReptileStyle and lose to him 3-2, and Konqrr faces Correzzio and loses 3-2. We never would have known what would have happened if I faced Konqrr Sub on Sub. Things like that is what makes me kind of prefer Round Robin, but like I said earlier..it takes a long time.
Just to explain how long it would take, last November I held a MKDA tournament at Video Game World at 5:00 and it did not end till about 7:30. This was a small 8 man tournament, and the whole round robin scheme became so frustrating that we eventually came to the conclusion that from that point on we'd continue the tourney with brackets. So god only knows how long it would take with Round Robin. Serious tourneys would most likely take 2 days, which is definitly common in the fighting game world.
So Overall I would have to say I prefer brackets. I mean if Im out to prove something against a specific person I can always do it pre tourney or post tourney.
What do you guys think of this? Ill post more later with more Versulation(my nickname for speculation)..lol.

man, just do brackets. just let the computer generate the list. only real question should be single or double elimination? obviously there's benfits to both and faults to both. it'll take a hell of a long time to do double considering how many people will sign up. but at the same time, what if one match gets screwed up by a hair of lag? i believe the person who lost should get a second chance. but single would speed things up much faster. and you would have an easier time finishing the tourney. if someone in double elimination loses, they may just quit the tournament completely. the opponent who they would face next would be assed out of the tourney because of a quitter. single would have a better chance of securing opponents together. chances are if someone keeps advancing, they're not going to quit.
blah i don't know how it should work. we need a real vote before the game is released and the majority of votes STAY for the final tournament rules. but i can already see this being a beotch to manage.
also, there have to be ps2 and xbox tournies. players with both consoles can enter both, obviously.

Do the brackets. It's a lot easier. But it will be ahrd as there will be many wanting to enter. I guess matches won't be able to happen between different consoles.

- brackets
- match set, 3 rounds, best 2 out of 3 matches
- finals match set, 5 rounds
- double elim
- infinates are legal
- game altering glitches are not legal
- talk as much shit as you want

Yeah, what Saty said pretty much sums up what im trying to get across.
So Double Elimination is a must have. Its just not fair. Suppose im using sub through out the tournament and Sub is VERY BAD vs Ermac. Suppose I pick sub vs an ermac player not knowing his style of play well and lose. Is that fair to me? Shouldnt i have a chance to not pick Sub and instead pick someone else? This is why double elimination just sounds right.
Best of 3 to me is the way to go as well. Thats just traditional tourney style to me. Semi finals should also be first to win 3 rounds like in pre semi final play. Finals to me would be best as first to win 5 rounds.
Infinites being allowed..depends on if they take skill or not. I say most definitly no if they are like they were in MKDA.
Lastly, I totally agree that brackets are the way to go. Konqrr showed me this bracket system that would work REALLY well for any fighting tournament. So yeah, brackets is the way to go.

There might be opitons built into MK:D for either of those modes in bracket, and modes for round robin. But for practicality Double Elimination for Bracket Kombat would be the most effective.
They need to bring back the gambling aspect in MK:D for sure, it would actually become usefull on online play.

Say for instance you have a character who can teleport. Say they could get the first hit in then like teleport, do some funky ass cancel or something situational; perhaps cancel that teli with another move which would make then disapear or get caught in a pillar, wall or some other shit. Then they just wait till the round is over to pick up the win.

I agree completely, except with the infinites part, but I doubt there will be any in the game.
