It's the only option fuzzy. Midway is, and has been for quite a while now, sunk. Mortal Kombat is better off someplace else. Perhaps WB Interactive?

It's so sickening to me to see all of these scummy companies more worried about giving bonuses to executives than actually paying their employees. Especially when those executives have done NOTHING but run the company into the toilet. Maybe we can give Midway a bailout too. It's a sickening cycle of big business autocracy in this country. Sadly, there's no end in sight!

what does this mean for the immediate future, such as dlc, mk8, etc? will they continue going forward with those, or is everything in limbo till midway decides what to do with mk?

Imagine what could be done with mk in the hands of a talented developer team.
If namco snap this up imagine mk on the tekken or soul calibur engine.
Or if capcom get it after the amazing job they did on street fighter 4.
This is an exciting and unknown time for mk fans. No disrespect to midway but this gives mk what it needed.

Well, maybe Midway can focus on a brand new game now.

Still, MK will never be the same without the whole MKTeam.

If MK used the Tekken or any other engine, it would cease to be MK. I think someone like EA or Activision would be a more suitable Publisher/Developer, seeing as they have games that are actually good, and not just rehashes of the same retired gameplay.
