Shinnok stood at the crater's edge, viewing the battle below with disgust. In a flash of powerful magiks the firespawn was no more; his essence cascaded down upon the remaining kombatants, but the result was much to Shinnok's surprise. The warriors weren't dead; they weren't even de-powered. Something has gone wrong...
Shinnok's annoyance quickly turned to anger. Hoping to salvage his failing plans, he opened a portal to the Netherealm, allowing his demonic armies to pass into Edenia. Hordes of plague-ridden zombies, bloodthirsty demons, and monstrous oni flooded into the crater. Since Blaze had failed to do as he was designed, Shinnok would have to finish the job himself.
Suddenly the crater was set ablaze in a violent inferno, engulfing the Netherealm forces in a godly fury. From atop the pyramid, a thunderous voice rang out.
"Shinnok!" the voice cried. "You and your minions are not welcome in Edenia! Leave at once or you shall suffer the Elder Gods' wrath!"
"You have no power over me, Taven!" Shinnok yelled in reply. "Your realm and all the others will be mine!"
In a blinding flash Taven vanished from the pyramid, and now stood face to face with the fallen god. The young godling seemed barely able to control himself.
"You have violated the laws of the Elder Gods," Taven said. "You must face their judgment!"
"Your empty threats do not frighten me, boy!" Shinnok barked. Yet even as he spoke a unearthly gust of wind came upon the two deities, and suddenly Shinnok was facing two wrathful gods.
"You have lost, Shinnok," said Fujin. His demeanor was calm, but the anger in the wind god's voice was tangible. "Raiden has been captured, and your allies defeated. Surrender now and we shall be merciful."
"As if I would bow in defeat to such scum!" Shinnok retorted. With that he recited a dark incantation, and before the other two gods could react, Shinnok was gone.
Back in the Netherealm, the fallen god returned to Nekros, seething with wrath. In his fury Shinnok pushed past the spire's guards, making his way to the throne room.
"How could I have lost?" Shinnok muttered to himself. "My plan was flawless. But the firespawn was supposed to weaken...now what devilry is this?" he said, suddenly noticing the figure perched on his golden seat.
"Welcome home Shinnok," Quan Chi said, a twisted grin across his face. Behind him stood his lackeys: Noob Saibot, Smoke, and Sareena.
"You think to usurp me, sorcerer?" Shinnok cried. He lunged toward Quan Chi, but was suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"You fool," Quan Chi said. "You cannot hope to challenge me. I am in control now." With that the sorcerer lifted his hand to reveal the circular, golden medallion in his clutches. Shinnok's amulet! Somehow the sorcerer had regained it. "Seize him!" he cried. Before Shinnok could react, Noob and Sareena were upon him, forcing the evil deity to the floor.
"Treacherous dog!" Shinnok spat. "I'll feast on your flesh!"
"You are defeated, my lord," Quan Chi sarcastically replied. "This realm is mine."
"No," a voice countered. "It's mine." Suddenly a hand grabbed for Quan Chi, and in a puff of smoke the sorcerer's precious amulet was gone. Another cloud sprang up behind Noob Saibot, and a crafty cyborg handed the prize over to his dark master.
"Thank you, Smoke," Noob said. "Now, sorcerer, I am the master. Bow before the new lord of the Netherealm."
"You conniving bastard," Shinnok mumbled from the throne room floor. With a swift kick in the head Sareena laid the former elder god low.
"Keep your mouth shut, worm!" she spat.
"Sareena, get that filth out of my sight," Noob said. She pulled the fallen deity off the floor and hauled him away. Turning back to Quan Chi, Noob repeated his offer. "This is your last chance, sorcerer. Kneel before your new master."
"I would never serve a being as lowly as you, wraith!" Quan Chi retorted.
"Very well, then," Noob replied, "I've thought of a better use for you."
Scorpion watched the intruding wraith intently. He didn't like visitors in his lair, least of all one of Quan Chi's lackeys. With an annoyed growl he leapt from his hiding place above to confront this unwanted guest.
"Noob Saibot," he said disdainfully. "Give me one good reason not to send your head as a gift to that pathetic master of yours."
"I've come to ask for your aid Scorpion," Noob replied. "I intend to make this and every other realm my own, and I'd like your help."
"And for what reason should I help you?" Scorpion asked.
"I've brought a gift as a token of good faith. Bring him in, Smoke." The cyborg brought forth his captive, and Scorpion's white, lifeless eyes widened in amazement.
"Quan Chi!" he exclaimed. "So this is your gift, wraith? A generous one indeed."
"So do we have a deal?"
Scorpion stared intently at the sorcerer, then back at Noob. Suddenly he flung his kunai forth, spearing Quan Chi through the shoulder. The sorcerer bellowed in pain. "Come here!" the spectre cried, pulling his nemesis across the room and onto the stone floor at his feet. Quan Chi tried to get back up, but Scorpion pinned him down with his boot.
"P-p-please, Scorpion," the sorcerer whimpered, "have mercy..."
An unearthly laugh rang out from beneath the spectre's mask. "Mercy? Ha! I'll show you mercy!"
"Please, Scorpion, n-no..."
The spectre slowly removed his mask, revealing a charred skull underneath. "Here's your mercy, sorcerer!" Scorpion cried, as his skeletal visage burst into flames. Quan Chi screamed in terror as the spectre bathed his most hated foe in a raging hellfire.
As Noob watched Scorpion reduce the sorcerer to a smoldering ash, a maniacal grin crept across his masked face. The Netherrealm was now his. Soon all the other realms would follow.
